The name "Sturgeon Moon" originates with the Algonquin peoples native to what is now the Northeastern United States. It refers to the fact that this period was considered a prime time for catching sturgeon in the Great Lakes and other major water bodies in the region.

Dancing in the moonlight
Most of the night has been raining heavily with occasional hail pelleting down, and brief moments of moonshine in between. I am hoping to be awakened by the moon setting in clearer skies. It is the first of the blue august moons
On a side note, my fishmonger grandfather traveled from Brooklyn to Canada to buy and smoke sturgeon to sell to delis. It was a rare and occasional treat he brought to us.
Good morning
Funny, but I grew up in the Great Lakes region and never knew sturgeon was an edible
fish. Perhaps smoking them makes it better?
cheers!
That's where caviar comes from :-)
Caviar comes from virgin sturgeon,
Virgin sturgeon's a mighty fine fish
Virgin sturgeon needs no urgin'
That's why caviar is my dish.
(Verse from a mildly bawdy folksong to the tune of "Reuben, Reuben")
There is no justice. There can be no peace.
smoke sturgeon?
On this...
I tried to smoke some once but couldn't get it lit!

Only you would try smoking sturgeon
Give it a try on a bed of herbs ; ).
good morning...
Been out and about handling chores on this 68F morning...very pleasant before heading back into the 90's tomorrow.
The supermoon was yellow as it rose here last night.
Y'all have a great day!

Thank you Lookout
for the wonderful Carlin quote.
Sturgeon is an oily fish, prized for its roe, said to have
firm flesh and delicate flavor. It was seriously over hunted and became quite scarce and, for some reason, socially unacceptable to eat. Some say it is best raw, as sashimi.

I wish Sashimi was a thing
when my grandfather had some sturgeon. I remember a wonderful photo of my grandfather beside a Canadian Indian who he bought from.
'couple' of more moon songs...

Ella Fitzgerald and her liquid rendition of a moon song which is almost as good as a restorative moon bath.
Thanks for the OT QMS. The moon was bright and shining here last night. The dogs and I took a late-night dip in the moon shine.
Hope all is well in your neck of the woods.
Which means that I must
include a sturgeon song.

I've been reading
a couple of books (actually more than a couple) about trees and forests. This book review caught my eye at Naked Capitalism; https://wildfiretoday.com/2023/08/01/just-put-it-out/
I'll have to add that to my book stack. Unfortunately it is an issue that affects increasingly more people and more places.
Some might consider this a full moon.
On a more serious matter.
Looks like a full moon to me
The following vid only makes sense to fans of the show, (of which I am but one of legions) but I can't resist posting it.
Apologies to those who don't find it amusing.

I just saw this
about what is happening with our open borders. There is too much abuse. The stories are horrible.
Jimmy Dore, JFK jr. lay it out.

is high in the sky, I hook up the bluetooth speakers and take them out on the porch and crank them up:

Further on "La Cabra"
sub theme,
Over 400 hungry goats have taken to the Sierra Nevada to help with vegetation management near Shaver Lake in California.
According to Southern California Edison, these goats will tackle vegetation that’s growing close to distribution and transmission lines across 15 acres.
Fish eggs is sorta weird to me, but what is it that cowboy caviar consists of?
Is it bulls balls? Can't remember ...
Thanks everyone for filling in today, in the middle of replacing a light with a fan.
No clearance on the ceiling beams, so have to drop it down a couple inches.
Oops, got my seafoods mixed-up
Rocky Mountain Oysters are not quite the same as cowboy caviar?
Oh well, life is for stumbling along some paths

I am in zoom mediation
taking a pause. Divorce, asset and debt division stuff.
We are trying to divide guns now, having finished dividing up the sex toys. The wife wanted, among the ones she has in her possession, the return of the 2, big black guy dildos.
I wonder if the opposing counsel, a seminary graduate, is faring well.
Lol!

We haven't quite resolved the gun collection division. We haven't settled the division of the proceeds from the sale of the house. At least we did agree on furniture, fixtures, vehicles, lawn equipment, and sex toys.
This was a much more interesting mediation than usual.

Sturgeon and moonlight
Hi all, Hope it's all good out there...
Sturgeon really are an odd group of fishes. Considered very primitive, like right after Lampreys. I think with lots of cartilage instead of bones, like sharks. I think almost all breed in freshwater, but many live much of their lives in marine environments. There are depending authority 22-28 species worldwide, and I think the U.S has about 7 species. Europe is ground zero for sturgeon diversity. Some have been recorded well over 20 FEET long!
My grandfather on dad's side was about 6'5" and huge. At one time he had state record Largemouth Bass from FL, and KY. He was a real deal fisherman. The story was that the fish pulled him off the river bank and he finally lost it 2 miles down river where he exited the water. It took the line breaking, they said he would have held on to the sea. This was the Sesquehanna River at York PA. It was thought to be a big sturgeon.
An old fav moon song...

Heh, had a work buddy hook a big sturgeon in the delta which
towed him and his skiff all over the delta for 4 or 5 hours before he landed it. I forget dimensions, but remember the picture - Toyota pick-up, tail gate down, it hung over the tailgate.

Hey QMS - happy super moon!
It's due to rise any minute. By luck the skies cleared and we will see it tonight. The Summer Triangle is already out.
July we had close to eight inches of rain and no super high temps. Good winds coming off the Atlantic unlike the strange winter calm we have been getting for several years now. Makes for smoky air with the wood stoves working to keep us all warm.
Many years ago the pirate and I used to fish Sturgeon below Bonneville Dam on the Columbia. We were allowed to keep three foot and over six, but absolutely no for the in between sizes. It was believed the three to six foot Sturgeon were all females and essential to promoting their continued survival.
The bank and boat based fishers were many: Native Americans; Latvians (our group); assorted die hard fishers. We used steel cable with two rods if we were bank fishing. A little motorized platform would carry the line weighted with a lead ball out to the hole we thought they were finning. Once over the preferred spot a jerk of the motor line would release the sinker with hook and cable. Don't think it's legal these days.

We settled at mediation!
Although the mediator did not list sex toys in the settlement agreement, we all agree they would fall under the "personal effects" category.
Now, another mediation Friday. It will involve selling cocaine and drunken blackouts, and which parent is best suited to be awarded custody of their baby.
