Friday Night Photos Father Time Edition
Happy Friday everyone. I hope everybody is doing well. Post any photos, memes, or music you like.
When I think about it, it just blows me away that in the mid 1600's, long before computers and calculators, our engineering forefathers were designing and building complex clock movements like the one inside this modern day grandfather clock.
A little history on the grandfather clock

Time is a valuable thing. Watch it tick by as the pendulum swings. _ In The End, Linkin Park
The gears in the clock go round and round
Full clock movement with chime rods and chime hammers
All those gears to turn three clock hands and moon phase plate
The three weights power the clock for eight days. 25 lbs total combined weight

wow, the burled crown face is immortal
but then again, so is time
a couple trees encompassing the rocks in their way growth over time
those are on the road 'to da dump', next is behind my shop
funny how trees can grow around otherwise immovable objects
given time -- perhaps we can too?
thanks for the grandfather clocks shots!
Hi, QMS.
Very interesting tree growth in the first two shots. The first angle looks like the tree is pooping out a big rock. The second angle looks like a lava flow coming down the rock.
Long after mans time is over here on earth not only the trees but all the flora will eventually overgrow what we've built.

I saw them when they came to San Diego that year. It was a great show.

Definitely works of art.
Made me think of the cuckoo clock. Had a beautiful one at my childhood home. A gift from a world traveling uncle. It disappeared at some point. I think put away or sold by dad after mom died.
Not as old as the grandfather clock. Wiki says it first appeared in the 1800s. (All info from Wiki.)

Cuckoo Clock — The Beach Boys
Recorded on September 6, 1962, at the last Surfin' Safari session.
does marking time make you cuckoo?
does me, have had to stop all the clocks around here to slow
down the process - do not need to be reminded of the passage
of time by mechanical or digital devices
we had a grand old grandfather clock at the farm
also a piece of 1800's craftsmanship
the greedy stepmother sold it off along with all of
our families heirlooms ..
irreplaceable, but that was on my dad
for those losses
time waits for no one
Hi, OLinda
We had a cuckoo clock in our house too when I was growing up.
Thanks for the info on cuckoo clocks and the Beach Boys.

Thanks Olinda
The photo on the album cover is perfect cuckooness, along with the song!
Cuckoo clocks and birds are both entertaining and mysterious. The cuckoos here are fascinating to me. Their call is clear and evident to anything in the vicinity, and is very present for some months, but they so rarely show themselves. Interesting choice of bird chosen for the swiss cuckoo clock.

Hi Social
Thank you for the fine art and craft of the grandfather clock. It’s beautiful inside and out.
Last Friday dystopian introduced op art in nature. I thought it might be fun to play with the camera with the thought of op art in mind.
Enjoy the weekend all and be well
the first shot could be a theme for the LGBTW community
the second is smooth, bright and illuminating
wow, you do have an eye for exposure!
Thanks Q
I think I must have been so focused on optical compositions I didn't even think about what they could represent. Maybe I got lost in time and need a clock that chimes to remind me ; ).
you do just fine
time is immaterial afaik
one moment to open the shutter
is all you need
wonderful composition
I'm saving your four lines
to remind me, thank you.
Hi, Janis
I didn't know what op art was so I looked it up. You've captured it beautifully. I really like the first one. There's something mesmerizing about it.
I'm great at multi-tasking. I can waste time, be unproductive, and procrastinate all at the same time.
Thanks Social
Any interest yourself in trying it ; ). It's fun.
I might give it a try

Now THAT'S art!

If it weren't for your cue
it wouldn't exist, and I'd have missed the fun.
Thanks for the taste of taffy and the fun. What a visual memory you have.
Interesting quote
"While the state exists, there is no freedom. When there is no freedom, here will be no state."
Who do you think said this? V. Lenin, State and Revolution, chapter 5.
It is an interesting quote
that asks for consideration. I'm wondering what stateless means. Anyway, what are your thoughts?
statelessness implies a divorce from
cultural norms
most people need an arranged existence
when the wildness of our spirit takes
precedence over subjected obedience
we become stateless
Wonderful interpretation Q
It makes sense that it can express a sense of freedom. I had been thinking in the direction of a sense of belonging, or lack of. Maybe the sense of belonging and freedom are one.
Like freedom to belong?
that is a tough fence to scale
but I get your jist and I think you
have boiled down the concept into a
manageable stew of ideas
given time, it may be palatable
That's what the book is about
Communism according to Lenin looks a whole bunch like the Paris commune (1871). Direct democracy on every level, including at work.
The "whithering of the state" is what will happen Only after the dictatorship of the proletariat.
After the revolution, the proletariat will seize control of the state, not because they want to grow it, but it will be used to crush their enemies (capitalists).
Lenin never trusted the state. He thought it would always be used to oppress the workers. But he also acknowledged that without a centralized state, the workers could never be able to win the revolution. That's why he always focused on the "purity" and focus of the communist party beforehand.
Unfortunately, Lenin was a sick man even before the end of the civil war. And Stalin was no Marxist.
Thank you for the elaboration
I guess intention is vital to benevolent control.
Time is a valuable thing
you can set your clocks on it
freedom is not measured by time
but time is running out to realize
what that freedom is worth
Sounds like a paradox
or maybe a catch22.

Thanks for all the creative art and links. The all mechanical Venus rover in the NASA article looks interesting.

Hi moonbat
One image looks like boarding a plane into the past, in terms of decor.
I especially enjoyed the snail slide.
Thanks for the images

Hi pixelators
Hi all, Hey SP!
Great time for these pics SP!
That Mick Taylor lead solo in Time Waits for No One might be his best ever, with Can't Ya Hear Me Knockin'.
A few other timely songs would be Time by the Chambers Brothers, No Time by the Guess Who, Time Is On My Side by the Stones, don't have time to grab them...
Here is a quickie, I gotta fly, am still working...
Six-lined Racerunner (formerly Whiptail) Aspidoscelis sexlineatus (genus formerly Cnemidophorus).

a favorite more esoteric time song everyone should hear... Timeless Time, Peter Green

Hi, dystopian
Great shots of the Racerunners.
I considered all the songs you listed. They're all great songs but I went with my two favorites. Thanks for including Peter Green .

Racerunner, that's you
Thanks for the photos and the Stones
Sp, that is one GORGEOUS clock!!!
A work of practical fine art? You bet! I check this diary weekly, but for some reason, this one is special. Maybe it's the subject of time, but these photos are outstanding. What a double special treat, you all!!!!!! REC'D!!!! (And How.) Humans have been marking time for millennia. It was very important for food gathering, agriculture, etc. Fascinating topic!
Inner and Outer Space: the Final Frontiers.
Hi, orlbucfan
I see time as the modern day slave master. It determines when we go to work, when we eat, when we play, when we sleep. The nicest thing about retirement is having more autonomy with my time and not being a slave to the clock.
