Open Thread WE 15 MAR 23 ~ Ides of March

~

The Ides of March is most remembered as being the anniversary of the day that Julius Caesar was assassinated, in 44 BCE. The day did, however, have some significance before this infamous event. It had long been a day of religious observances. The Ides of each month was sacred to Jupiter, Rome's supreme deity. Flamen Dialis, Jupiter's high priest, would traditionally lead an "Ides sheep" along the streets of Rome before it was sacrificed.

~

Also, today is International Day Against Police Brutality It has been observed annually on March 15th since 1997.

Perhaps the cops should stop slaughtering the sheep already?

~

Here we are in the middle of the week in the middle of the month about 1/4 of the way
thru the year. Woo hoo time flies.

Good Morning. Found this article in the AAA magazine. Seems Chrysler experimented
with sound systems for their premium models around 1956. As an option, they would
install a 7" record player in the glove box. It was called the Highway HI-FI. They came
with six proprietary records.

In 1960, they upgraded to a RCA Victrola model which could play 14 singles in a row.
The turntables did not work so well in the Dodges and Plymouths.

Rain tomorrow. Must get the potatoes and corn in (should have already been done). Then gather at least 7 buckets of goat poo. Collect as many big pots as I can find. I sprout many of my seeds before I plant. Crystal, my goat cat who sits with me as I watch the goats graze the open field, just now jumped up on me in bed full of mud. Sigh . . . Already have 4 cats and 4 dogs with me. Kind of nice to sit up in bed with my Chromebook before I get to work for the day.

A big part of my gardening strategy is to have tomatoes, green beans, peppers, and other things planted in big pots that will sit next to a shipping container. This is so they only get morning sun. The full sun is brutal here. But do have my onions out in raised beds and a full sun plot for the corn, potatoes, sunflowers, okra, watermelon, and canteloupe. You see, the big pots with tomato starts are currently in the greenhouse.

Current event comments? The banking thing is creepy. Could only bear to watch a bit of Matt Taibi's testimony to Congress. In a follow-up article, he said it made him sad more than angry. It made me feel nauseous. We have such morally low-level people representing us. Bhriana Joy Gray interviewed Ro Khanna (spelling on those hames?) and he said that many progressives are already committing to support Joe Biden in the next election. How???

My current hope is that BRICS will save the world. President Xi says, "If we protect nature, nature will protect us."

May all of you find peace and beauty around you today.

I agree the BRICS model is the better alternative to the disaster capitalism the west is
pushing. Basket of goods. Local currencies. Mutually beneficial trade. What is there
not to like? Except for the Wall Street types Wink

I did have a great gardening day.

I wonder when it will be official about all the countries joining BRICS? Mexico. Isn't that exciting?

I know it's just common terminology, but

We have such morally low-level people representing us.

we need to continually emphasize to ourselves, the media and the politicos that those assholes don't remotely represent us, and we know it, and that has to change.

....at your Goat Poo Retreat, if you offer such a program. I'd apply for an Internship but I'm new to this planet and have no experience with agriculture or animal husbandry.

Meanwhile, I, too, am hopeful about the BRICS. They promise a scaleable and practical utopian approach to development that the UN once envisioned.

I have long been convinced that China has the wisdom and will to rescue this damaged earth. The Belt and Road Initiative is the perfect vehicle to rapidly establish world wide sustainability. It's a great gift to the world. For me, it was China's determined eradication of poverty that sealed the deal. If the planet can still be rescued for future generations of humanity, I firmly trust that China will make the investment and lead the way. There are no other contenders.

YMMV

I watch China videos all the time. So impressed with Xi, his roots, his career, his words "the most important thing in life is to do good things for the people."

They have big ag without the greed factor. IMO Lifting people out of poverty. The infrastructure.

There is so much we could learn from China!

I’m getting a little irritated about the NC comments section being turned into a dumpster fire of talking points. If you want that, go read Kos.

Or is that damnation? Smile

From Lambert in yesterday’s water cooler about comments with no source…or just making shyte up.

I’m still awed at Kos and his echo chamber being upset with Switzerland for staying neutral in a war that could lead to one that could end life on earth.

I think this is excellent timing to celebrate the day 7 years ago when we were told that our opinions of the Hellabitch weren’t welcome over there and so the best writers fled to parts elsewhere and many stopped at the blue blog before moving on.

Aren’t we thankful that this blog was waiting and welcoming for us? Gotta a few extra $$$? I’m sure the kitty can use a refill.

I HAVE A REQUEST FOR YOU.

Please get to know the "ropes" of this site, caucus99percent, like the back of your hand. Should my worst fears be realized, and all non-conservas and those of us who aren't reliable acolytes of the Church of Limousine Political Correctness get hurled out into utter darkness, they will be coming here to seek the community and the refuge that is theirs by right as thinking human beings. In many cases they'll need a little help making the transition, especially if they never used DK version 4. So let's be ready to pitch in and assist if necessary.

Because I fear it may well become necessary.

And lo and behold, it did. Killary got nominated, just like Kos wanted. And Chump got elected, just as I warned Kos et al.that he would. And those with the temerity to stand by this warning were, indeed, hurled out into utter darkness, and many fled and landed here.

Sigh........

All the snow since January has lingered because of how cold it’s been, but it is now gone in just 3 days because of warmer temps and lots of rain. The house across from me wasn’t shoveled at all and now only has 2 small patches of snow remaining. Thankfully Sam’s hill of snow is still standing, but it’s so soft she sinks when trying to climb it. I didn’t know she knew how to curse like that….gotta find some soap.

Subject is interesting.
My brother got his garden in just in time for a near freeze for 4 days, and heavy rains. Last year it was a drought. In both years, there are deer to wipe it out in a night.
Of course, the DK directive, Her or Go, made transitioning to c99 easy.
We have music blasting and the grill hot as hell for those amazing rib eyes.
Which reminds me, I need to check the vegetables I am supposed to be cooking...
Anyway, I had a busy day at work, and was just given an ultimatum: Prove that Putin did not somehow kill a potted plant with his magic arsenal. I am gonna study on that, respond after a few beers.
Thanks for the OT, friend!
