Open Thread - Thurs 12 Jan 2023 - Shaking My Head

Just Shaking My Head:

Sometimes all I can do is shake my head when reading analyses of the 'news' which is pumped out to us daily.

Recently there was a great feel good story about the police in Indianapolis finding a little kid who was kidnapped and left for a couple of days in an abandoned stolen car outside a pizza joint. Lots of news outlets reported on the story, here's a report from a local station: WishTV. Basically, there were two twin boys in the back seat of a car stolen several days earlier in Columbus, Ohio. One of the twins was found fairly quickly, after having been left in a parking lot at the Dayton airport. The second twin was missing for days until found by, according to the original news stories, the police outside the pizza joint in the original stolen, and now abandoned, car. This story was published in several news outlets, such as CNN (original story here, updated story after they added in information about the two women rescuers a few days after the original publication).

But a deeper dive, such as done by Luke O'Neil writing on his substack called 'Welcome to Hellworld' reveals a much different story. It wasn't the police who found the child, it was two women who couldn't even get the police to help them who found both the kidnapper AND the baby boy because of their dogged determination. Many of the news outlets got this wrong (see O'Neil's piece for some examples) but some news outlets got this right. For example: here's a piece from the IndyStar which talks about the two women heroes (how the IndyStar got the piece).

Pic of the baby and an the officer with one of the rescuing hero women in the background (Shyann Delmar). Her cousin, Mecka Curry, took the photo which was used by all the news outlets

I suggest reading O'Neil's substack story on this, if you haven't already (link above). He goes into several other examples of the news turning things in favor of the police. It all makes me livid, but I have to shrug and shake my head in disbelief because there's not much else I can do.

Have you been seeing any nonsense like this (it doesn't have to be about the police, although it often is) in the news? Have any antidotes for the way the news throws us biased reporting? I try to read different news outlets, both right and left, to get an overall picture, but, obviously, the stories are still slanted in a way approved by TPTB. I also read work by marginalized journalists like Mate, Greenwald, Tiabbi, and O'Neil, etc, to get a better understanding of what is happening. I would love to read about any examples of the slanting, and antidotes to that slanting, you have in the comments!

A Fun Goat Pic:
Here's our young goat, Peaches, with one of our young roosters, Tiny, on her back. This was from 2014. We went through a stage where we had chicks that were bred and then hatched on the farm. Those chicks turned into chickens which really liked the goats, and the goats seemed to like them in return. The chickens would jump on the goat, ride around the pasture, and pick bugs off the goats as they rode. Tiny did his job as a roo', defending his hens, and passed away when he was about 5. Peaches is still with us!
tiny_peaches_dec_14_2014.jpg

So, thanks for reading and here's the open thread - and remember, everything is interesting if you dive deep enough, so tell us about where you're diving!

How's the winter rains treating ya? It's wet here, some flooding, but nothing like those in CA are getting... yikes. Our goats haven't been out in the field for a week, too wet. Goats don't like wet. They like snow! Kinda.

Let us know what's up, and how you are doing, and all that! Looking forward to reading your comments! And have a great weekend!

Cute goat and rooster image. Just riding along, singing my song ..

Sometimes Naked Capitalism will post two stories side by side to show
how issues can be slanted one way and another. They generally come to
conclusions which are quite different. The diabolical nature of the MSM
spin machine is a homogenized bombardment of only one viewpoint,
apparently dictated by the spinmeisters in charge. Personally don't listen
to the feeds, but get indications from commentary at various independent
sites.

Anytime I've been involved in a event covered by the media, they get it wrong. The MSM creates more news than it reports. The spin machine is on high.

I find the reporters you mention to be real journalists. I also like Alex Christoforou and The Duran. Plus I usually read the Scheerpost.com, Moon of Alabama, Caity Johnstone, Automaticearth, and antiwar.com (among others).

We're due a storm today with high winds. Already had 3.3" this month so far. So battening the hatches and laying low.

Thanks for the OT!

Black Sea movement above in your post, QMS. A good time to note that the Black Sea joins up to the Mediterranean in the Bosporus Straits. Yes, Turkey. An enigmatic ally and a NATO member.

Now we see the Russian Navy moving into the English Channel and then into the Atlantic Ocean.

Last week we discussed how the Admiral Gorshkov carried Zircons which are hypersonic missiles.
Only China and Russia have these low flying very fast weapons. The US talks and dreams about having them someday.
Hypersonic missiles eliminate the need for nuclear because they can destroy limited objectives, not entire species and the planet.

I think that the Russians are sending a clear message as they move their ships into the Black Sea and the Atlantic.
The Bear is saying "Back off now, NATO, We've got this covered." Time for Poking the Bear has run out.

Soon after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the United States and several other NATO members stepped up their presence in the Black Sea. But that presence waned, and notwithstanding Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg’s 2017 pledge to send more alliance ships to the region, it remains insufficient.

Due to years of under investment and defense cuts across Europe, many NATO members lack the number of suitable naval ships to increase patrols in the Black Sea. Also, restrictions placed on the size, type and length of time allowed in the Black Sea for non-littoral states under the terms of the 1936 Montreux Convention limit NATO’s presence.

@NYCVG

I hope Russia left some ships in the area to protect Crimea.

The West Signals Support for Ethnic Cleansing in Crimea

No central government will ever come out and say, “We’re planning to ethnically cleanse our separatist region”. That’s just not going to happen. So we must look carefully at statements by government officials and analyze them in the context of their strategic goals.

First, some background regarding the separatist region of Crimea. The basic facts: 1) Ukraine and NATO openly say they want to conquer Crimea. 2) According to Russian law, Crimea is part of the Russian Federation, though the West won’t recognize that status. 3) Crimea’s population overwhelmingly wants to remain a part of Russia. 4) Many journalists and researchers have corroborated the pro-Russian mood among the vast majority of Crimeans; the evidence is overwhelming.

On Dec 21, I published the article Will there be Ethnic Cleansing in Donbass and Crimea if Kiev and NATO win? I analyzed the possible fate of the contested Black Sea peninsula in the unlikely case that NATO/ Ukrainian forces seize it.

Now, I have an update — yesterday, a former top U.S. and NATO general and a former Ukrainian defense minister gave strong indication of their sinister vision for the people of Crimea. Their comments came at a forum that’s widely indicative of the general mood among the NATO elite. So their words need to be taken seriously.

Speaking at a webinar about NATO and Ukrainian plans for Crimea that was sponsored by the Atlantic Council, U.S. General (Ret.) Wesley Clark falsely claimed: “Crimea has been ethnically cleansed [by the Russians]; the residents who were there in 2013 are not there today. The Tatars have been run out and the Russians have moved in. This is typical of how the Russians work. There needs to be a plan for the reintegration of Crimea into Ukraine. And I’m convinced that many Russians living there will welcome living in Ukraine, rather than an isolated, dictatorial Russia.”

Reminds me of what Putin said to Obama after Crimea voted to stay with Russia.

Obama: Hey we wanted to take over the port at Sebastopol!

Putin: Crimea river it’s ours.

Smile

But seriously is Clark that deluded or is he just making crap up so that his masters in defense industries can make more money from blood and death? I’m sick of our money going to kill people who are no threat to us. Wish I knew how we could stop this bloody cycle.

Never knew this existed.

"Goat Simulator Free is the latest in goat simulation technology, bringing next-gen goat simulation to YOU. You no longer have to fantasize about being a goat, your dreams have finally come true!

Goat Simulator Free is all about causing as much destruction as you possibly can as a goat. It has been compared to an old-school skating game, except instead of being a skater, you're a goat, and instead of doing tricks, you wreck stuff. When it comes to goats, not even the sky is the limit, as you can probably just bug through it and crash the game."

My dream has never been to be a goat. I would just like to get a couple more for pets, but I have some medical issues right now. I caught a cold/sinus infection at the hospital 6 weeks ago and have not been able to get rid of it. It gets better than flairs up again. I think the weather has something to do with it. When it goes down to the 30's at night and then 70 or more in the day, it's like my sinuses can't keep up.

@Enchantress Not a doctor or a thespian but- I fought a recurring sinus infection for monthes before it subsided, occasionally short term flare ups.
But after Covid was a thing, it turned up and I must have had to see a doctor to justify my sick leave. At that point I was handed antibiotics and steroids to address the problem (because they cant be sure which will work) and it was a great moment.
Highly recommend going to someone who will offer you this treatment.
Im certain it is ubiquitous.
The discomforting pain is outrageous.
I dont believe I have dealt with it since.

Adam Johnson uses the term "Copaganda" - dont know if he coined it. Cops post cute pics of themselves coddling kids, pets etc.

There was a viral image of this frightened Black kid hugging a white police officer few years ago (during some BlackLivesMatter protest IIRC). Ta Nehisi Coates mentions in his memoir how lamestream media dimwits were rubbing that in his face asking why he doesn't clap louder because of this one white police officer.

Police not only NOT help children but actually harm them & their families. It is as old as the hills. From 1928

pig.

One last fire department thing, and then I'll shut up about it. In the '70's, there was a move afoot to create the "public safety officer", which was an effort to save municipalities money by crosstraining their cops as firefighters. These hybrid *things* would keep their turnout gear in the back of their squad cars, and when there was a fire call, they'd roll up with sirens hooting and lights flashing, and instantly change roles into firefighters. Or so it was thought.

Well, what ended up actually happening in the big cities that tried it was that they'd roll up, not change into their turnouts, and spend their time busting people or planting weed and *then* busting people, while the actual firefighters fought the fire. As a result, people stopped calling the fire department for the aforementioned reasons: they didn't want the pigs sifting through their belongings while "fighting the fire". As I recall, it didn't last very long. There is no love lost between the two roles.

Needless to say, my dislike for the cops is bred into me, and goes way back. When I call the fire department, I want people who are actually firefighters to show up. And firefighters *always* show up. The cops may take a few days, and frankly may cause more harm than good. Not a fan.

I remember when we had an all volunteer fire department and two cops. Things changed.
Millions in federal monies built us a new complex: more cops, more cars, more gear.
Their budgets exploded, unions took over and now we have a NATO brigade.

You mentioned the rain(s) so I thought I'd formally note that it isn't, at this exact moment, raining in this specific part of the East Bay, though we've been promised more rain and storms in the offing. In fact, one source states that the current dry period will last 6 more hours, then ...

We've had enough rain and accumulated enough snow pack that at least one source has declared the drought to be over. Heh. CAUTION - 1) there is a backlog, and the reservoirs still need filling, as do the aquifers and the water table in most areas. Many places have seen seen surface subsidence due to withdrawals from the water table/aquifers that need to be restored 2) Drought is a technical term, and so is Desert. Much of the state is technically desert, hence the end of the drought does not mean ample water is available in a great many places.

Freedom of the seas and navigational freedom needs to cut two ways, the Rus are possibly just demonstrating that without running around shouting Look, we're doing freedom of the seas, hooray us. Heh

Good gravy the dude cannot even read a statement made up for him. I want to know if anyone in his administration is silently wondering about the 25th amendment? If you recall the media covered Biden’s mentality before Obama cleared the field and made Biden the candidate. And lots of times when he was let out of the basement he couldn’t keep a lid on his anger. WHY, WHY, WHY!!! And stabbing his finger in people’s chest.

Which AIPAC/MIC/pharma/bank bought politician are you going to vote for? Don’t be surprised when nothing changes.

which made my brain hurt. I still don't know exactly what he said, but I think Prince was there with a little red corvette?

Walking in the sand

bottom line, U.S. is naked and exposed in Latin America and Caribbean. Lots of confusing actions at elite and government levels but over time the "street" is heating things up. Multipolarity is the only path that will benefit from it.

we all need it and hold together and keep with our feet grounded even if the most awful storm knocks out your houses and dreams. I have nothing else or more to say.

Every thing has an end (and my sister would add to that that only sausages have two ends. I think she is smart) Wink

I found the juxtaposition of the two photos in your essay interesting. When looking at them within no specific context they are both reflective of ‘carrying’, or mutual support. There's something precious in both photos, while one is not a true reflection of the reality. It's somewhat heartbreaking to think that such a traumatic event for a purely innocent baby is used to promote a heartfelt response to the police.
