The Weekly Watch
Happy Mothers Day!
We are all related, descended from a common Mother sometimes called Eve. We all share the same mitochondrial DNA. Despite all our differences, we really are a single human family. If only we could view our tribe as being all of humankind, wars might become obsolete, and we all might rest in the bosom of Gaia.
Rock Me to Sleep
Elizabeth Akers Allen - 1832-1911
Backward, turn backward, O Time, in your flight,
Make me a child again just for tonight!
Mother, come back from the echoless shore,
Take me again to your heart as of yore;
Kiss from my forehead the furrows of care,
Smooth the few silver threads out of my hair;
Over my slumbers your loving watch keep;—
Rock me to sleep, mother, — rock me to sleep!
Backward, flow backward, O tide of the years!
I am so weary of toil and of tears,—
Toil without recompense, tears all in vain,—
Take them, and give me my childhood again!
I have grown weary of dust and decay,—
Weary of flinging my soul-wealth away;
Weary of sowing for others to reap;—
Rock me to sleep, mother — rock me to sleep!
Tired of the hollow, the base, the untrue,
Mother, O mother, my heart calls for you!
Many a summer the grass has grown green,
Blossomed and faded, our faces between:
Yet, with strong yearning and passionate pain,
Long I tonight for your presence again.
Come from the silence so long and so deep;—
Rock me to sleep, mother, — rock me to sleep!
Over my heart, in the days that are flown,
No love like mother-love ever has shone;
No other worship abides and endures,—
Faithful, unselfish, and patient like yours:
None like a mother can charm away pain
From the sick soul and the world-weary brain.
Slumber’s soft calms o’er my heavy lids creep;—
Rock me to sleep, mother, — rock me to sleep!
Come, let your brown hair, just lighted with gold,
Fall on your shoulders again as of old;
Let it drop over my forehead tonight,
Shading my faint eyes away from the light;
For with its sunny-edged shadows once more
Haply will throng the sweet visions of yore;
Lovingly, softly, its bright billows sweep;—
Rock me to sleep, mother, — rock me to sleep!
Mother, dear mother, the years have been long
Since I last listened your lullaby song:
Sing, then, and unto my soul it shall seem
Womanhood’s years have been only a dream.
Clasped to your heart in a loving embrace,
With your light lashes just sweeping my face,
Never hereafter to wake or to weep;—
Rock me to sleep, mother, — rock me to sleep!

The term Mother is a bit over used to my thinking. we've got the MOAB, the mother of all bombs. George Galloway calls his Sunday Podcast MOATS, the mother of all talk shows. However, I do like the idea of Mother Earth or Gaia.
Much like the term Mother Nature.
She is the Mother we all depend upon and need like a two way street care for.
Many cultures over time have worshiped the Earth goddess in various ways. One way was with cave art. Recently a large assemblage was revealed in Alabama using high tech photography.
Alabama cave reveals mysterious new images traced by ancient hands
There's an Ancient Art Archive where you can search your state for examples of paleolithic works.
https://archive.ancientartarchive.org/?search=Alabama
Was this art created as a form of worship or is it just ancient art? We don't know. The knowledge and mystery of the ancients is intriguing to me.
We all can do at least little things to minimize our impact on the natural system, or even enhance the environment. One of my primary relationships with the planet is through the garden. However compared to Jim Kovaleski, I'm a mere amateur. He makes the case that his small scale production methods are the future of farming and food.
I understand those farming for a living have to look at the economics of production. Being a homesteader focused on self sufficiency removes the production pressure, but to realistically provide every community local fresh produce would require adoption of Jim's small scale local approach.
So I want to wish all the Mothers a wonderful day as well as all who care for and steward mother earth. If your Mom is alive be sure to give her a call or visit. Without her there would be no you. This is an open thread. Any and all topics acceptable below.

Had an odd garden experience this week...
We had what we discovered to be a racoon invasion. They dug out under one of the gates which I plugged with some fencing scraps. They mainly dug in the mulch. I use a rat poison baited vole trap made out of a sink drain tee. You bury it in the vole tunnel and when they come through they eat the poison and die. Well that trap was dug up and the tight fitting cap removed and the poison was gone. My plug seemed to work as we had no more invasions.
This weekend I started smelling something and found a dead racoon in a nearby ditch. So the vole trap was his undoing.
Spring wildflowers are just lovely this year. Hope your spring has unfolded nicely too.
All the best!

Hey, yeah critters
Last year a silly raccoon tried to crawl under the workshop floor and got stuck.
Then perished. peeyoo what a stink. Had to bring a critter bznz to dig and drag
it out. Haven't the stomach for that stuff. Now the woodchucks are inhabiting that
space. I don't mind them so much but my wife is scared of them.
Always something. And the new arrivals this year are little red squirrels. Never had
them before, just the big gray squirrels. The hawks seem to keep them somewhat
under control, but they really are pests.
good luck

Good morning Lookout et y'all. Happy Mothers' Day to
everybody too. Slow day planned here today, after sourdough pancake and ham breakfast, tinkering around the edges of the stuff on the endless to do list. Sun is out and temps seem mild so far predictions are for cloudy and a high of 59. The 6 to 7 hour just vanished in a wink on me, so who knows what will really get done today. Had a big block party in the court yesterday, the first in a couple of years, so the impetus to get going on humdrum affairs is minimal. Ah well, time to get going on the pancakes I guess.
be well and have a good one.

Nice to hear...
...of your community gathering. So nice to see old friends and feel things are getting back to normal.
It is a cool day here as well. It's blackberry winter as we call it...right on time. Cabbages and such love it. Tomatoes and sweet potatoes, not so much. Good and bad as with most things.
Hope it is a good day!

Pretty interesting to see their leadership trainee lists.

My mom used to send me Mother’s Day cards from my dawgs
The first one had a my return address on, but from the backyard. Every year I would get one from wherever they were staying whilst I was working. Such a sweet memory now that she is gone.
I’m pretty sure Sam mumbled something about it this morning but her mouth was full of sock when she said it. It’s our morning thing for her to bring me my socks and then shoes a bit later. Sometimes she has to go find them wherever she left them after pilfering them in the middle of the night. She usually wakes me up being so proud that she found them. It’s the little things…

On the food processing plants
From a comment on MoA
It sure looks like there is a deliberate attack on them and it’s starting to get lots of notice. Supplies are also being held up in China because of the Covid lockdowns and then we have the oil companies deliberately slowing down their production of gas and gawd only knows what else the corpse class is going to do to us to cause strife in our lives. The parasite class is also buying up homes for sale and driving costs even higher. The elite have declared war on we the other people and I wonder how much longer people will just take it?

Unbelievable
Full out war. Growing your own food is a security issue?

They don't care about people...only profits
So we are and will be victims of their greed. Hate to say it, but that's what I see.

LO,
I gotta confess. While you and others are trying to eradicate raccoons, I was in a Colorado motel for a week, immediately noticed a coon came up an alley, knocked off the top of the garbage bin, and dove in. Well, as I saw him walking away, I noticed he had 3 1/2 legs. His right front leg had no paw, and only half it's normal length.
I encouraged all my motel neighbors to pitch in their leftovers. We got to watch Rocky feast every night.
This is harsh land, not suitable for gardens. I don't know how a coon got into that little town and has lived long enough to be so huge.
We are on our way home, staying in a motel in a motel outside of Amarillo that is, without a doubt, the most luxurious and well-appointed motel I have ever stayed in, anywhere in the US. If I didn't need to get to court on Tuesday...
Thanks for the WW, and I will have lots of links to check out this evening!

The racoon did himself in...
I wasn't out for it. Wasn't even sure if it was armadillo or opossum or racoon. He got into the vole trap and ate the poison it contained.
I'm all for the wild critters, so I'm glad you enjoyed seeing them. Also glad y'all had a nice trip!
