03/14 Pi Day

Pizza Pi

~~     Pizza Pi

So, today is Pi Day, or, is it really?

Pi Day celebrates the constant Tau divided by two, also known as Pi, but relative to what?.  Well, maybe whatever.  Ram Das said "be here now", and, with that in mind, give Vi Hart a listen:

-

On this day in history:

-

1590 – Henry of Navarre and the Huguenots defeated the forces of the Catholic League at the Battle of Ivry during French Wars of Religion, cementing his role as sole claimant to the throne, which, ironically, he would not attain until he converted to Catholicism.  Ah well, such is life.

1663 – According to his own account, Otto von Guericke completed his book De Vacuo.

1757 – Admiral Sir John Byng was executed by firing squad aboard HMS Monarch for breach of the Articles of War.

1780 – Spanish forces captured Fort Charlotte in Mobile, Alabama, the last British frontier post capable of threatening New Orleans

1794 – Eli Whitney was granted a patent for the cotton gin

1885 – The first public performance of The Mikado went down

1900 – The Gold Standard Act was ratified, placing the United States currency on the gold standard

1903 – The first national wildlife refuge in the US, Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge, was established by President Theodore Roosevelt

1942 – Anne Miller became the first US patient to be treated with penicillin, under the care of Orvan Hess and John Bumstead.

1961 – A USAF B-52 bomber crashed near Yuba City, California whilst carrying nuclear weapons.  It was later alleged that the crew's use of dexedrine to combat fatigue was a contributing factor.

1964 – Jack Ruby was convicted of killing Lee Harvey Oswald

1967 – The body of U.S. President Kennedy was moved to Arlington National Cemetery.

1978 – The Israel Defense Forces launched Operation Litani, a seven-day campaign to invade and occupy southern Lebanon

1982 – The South African government bombed the headquarters of the African National Congress in London.

1995 – Norman Thagard became the first US astronaut to ride to space on board a Russian launch vehicle.

I always had my students measure the circumference of various round objects with a measuring tape and then the diameter. Using their measurements divide the circumference by the diameter and voila it's pi (depending on the accuracy of their measurements). of course you let them discover that fact themselves.

A nice activity for pi and science education day.

Thanks for the OT and music. Going to be a lovely day here. Hope yours is a good one!

@Lookout

The trick there is the measuring, especially of the circumference. Rolling a wheel with a mark on the edge is arguably best for C, but still a ton of room for error. Nonetheless yours is one of the two classic methods for deriving the constant.

Looks like it will be a nice day here too. Busy, but nice.

tape is exquisite and haunting. It is perfect for almost St. Patrick's Day.

Thanks for that and the open thread.

Let's see what the day will bring.............

@NYCVG

indeed. If you go to you tube and search for Liam O'Flynn you'll find, iirc, at least one more with Knopfler, there was one I wanted to put in this OT but which can only be viewed on You Tube, but I cannot recall if it was solo or with somebody, and if so, who.

Not all reviews were positive. “There wasn’t a lot of acknowledgement of what America should stop doing in terms of their connections to occupations, invasions, and general bad-faith actions across the world,” Greene said. Similarly, Suzdaltsev told The Washington Post that “the energy of the call felt like a press briefing for kindergartners.” Listen to a recording of the briefing below.

@NYCVG First off and most important it will bring the end the "petrodollar"

The empire is in retreat and needs just about anyone to say we must end
our military presence abroad and concentrate on the people at home.

I believe since 2008 the FED has been the buyer of all treasuries that
come to market, so with SA moving East, the West is doomed.

I guess Joementia is the real Nero
