Twitter or any social media or internet app? Don’t fucking use them!

What’s so hard about that? They don’t control the flow of 3 billion people’s info if we don’t give it to them. It really is that easy.

Hypocrisy from the US government and Americans? Ya don’t say? When did that start?

I’m not picking on you snoop. I love your content and generally agree with you and most on C99. Even when I don’t, like now, I respect you and your opinions.

Social media is both a wonderful tool and a trap. Corporations using a wonderful tool that people find useful (addicting?) isn’t anything new. Remember Coca Cola had cocaine at one time. They live by the market they will die when the market dries up. Step back from the keyboards people and stop whining about what is inevitable that we can’t change. It’s legal like it or not.

I personally don’t care what anyone says or writes. I know who they are by what they say. Let them be fools or assholes or intentionally offensive. But at some point the government that is supposed to have an interest in the greater good should regulate what is in the public interest. Too bad our system ceased acting that way a long time ago. That is the problem. We don’t like what corporations do but we continue to support them by using their products against us. That is a problem. We can do something about the corporations if not the government. Do it instead of crying about it.

I’m in that dilemma with WhatsApp, a Facebook owned app. It is necessary for daily life here. But as of today I’m only using it when I must. I have a new app for communication with friends around the world that doesn’t, yet, use my data in ways I don’t want them to.

It is our responsibility to act in our own interests on these kinds of issues. Nobody else will. It’s on us when we don’t.

Thousands of people breech the halls of congress and many of them were wearing backpacks as you can see in the photos. But after they got all of them to leave congress just went back into the chambers and finished their business.

How did anyone know that no one left a pipe bomb or something there? Where was the security on that? Curious.

But I’m wondering why no one thought to make sure it was safe for them to go back to work. How could they KNOW it was safe? There had to be hundreds of backpacks there. Any one of them could have contained something and hidden to go off in an hour or so. If it were terrorists that had done it you know congress would never have been allowed back in. This is my question.

@snoopydawg but I suspect that when this was being organized, the pre-arranged understanding with law enforcement was nothing too rigourous in terms of screening and the protesters would show up and shout a bit, and then go home. I don't think they were anticipating the moron tidal wave to start acting out their video games. They became dangerous very quickly and it wasn't what the cops agreed to/expected.

@snoopydawg In this video, you can clearly see the police open the doors and then stand quietly by along the hall as the protesters enter. I found the link to this video at PJ Media website which I believe is right wing, but the accompanying text is very interesting.

https://pjmedia.com/news-and-politics/victoria-taft/2021/01/08/the-most-...

The Capitol Police were twice offered federal help to protect the building before and during the rally. They twice said no thanks, according to the AP.

Since there is a definitive video of the police letting protesters in, I am having a difficult time understanding how Trump can be held solely accountable for this. This incident at the Capitol has been used to ban Trump from all social media, and for Biden and the Democrats to push for MORE laws banning speech under the guise of homeland security.

What has transpired thus far from this incident is far more frightening than the incident itself because the long term effects are going to be tyranny via tech and more losses of our First, Fourth and Fifth Amendment rights. All of this coming from the Dems with the Squad leading the way.

The rally at the Capitol had an estimated 100,000+ people in attendance and only a very small number of those at the rally stormed the Capitol building. What I foresee in the future is that any gathering of people will be met with strong arm police tactics. Biden is already talking about increasing federal aid to police departments. Authoritarianism is alive and well in DC, regardless of the administration. The fallout of this incident is being used to suppress dissent on both the right and left. So no one should cheer Trump's ban from social media because it is and will continue to be used against us on the left..

On top of that, no one in the Democratic party is even talking about Medicare for All or another stimulus or any other COVID relief for the people. Every time a populist idea takes hold, some sort of incident conveniently occurs to divert the public's attention away from it.

@snoopydawg

before they went back in. But you are right that it was done extraordinarily quickly. I had heard on the news earlier that day that it was likely to be at least 24 to 48 hours before the building was cleared and declared safe. But it was done in a matter of a few hours. I also read that was why the crowd outside was left alone for so long, because they were focused on clearing and securing the building first. Which makes sense.

And of course, this was entirely different from any other crime scene. This was the U.S. Congress and they were responding to a direct attack that was designed to prevent them from finishing the job at hand. It was essentially in pure defiance of that effort that they were all determined to stay all night and get it done. So I suppose some of the protocols were set aside so they could get back in there as quickly as possible. I stayed up all night that night and watched every minute until it was over. I think it was a good thing they did that, necessary even. Letting the attack succeed in delaying the vote would have been a bridge too far. Even the republicans were on board with getting back in there to finish the job.

Yes I agree. It was important to finish the business and not be too scared to do it. I am curious though and will look, but if the repubs who are questioning the results of Penn. because the legislature did not authorize mail in ballots, then how was it different than what democrats did 3 times before and the latest was in 05 when Boxer and another questioned the results from Ohio for Bush. If it was legal for dems to do it, then why not the GOP? This needs clearing up. I will look later. Gotta run and burn off some puppy energy.

@snoopydawg

First of all, let's not conflate legality with what is right and wrong. The republicans making objections were entirely legal, and in fact everyone had already accepted that they were going to do it, and it was going to drag out the process so they could put on a show, and of course send out fundraising emails and twits during the performance. Then, after delaying things for several hours, they would lose and Biden's win would be final (again). Although a number of people were not happy about this, they were not doing anything illegal.

So I'm not sure what you are asking, actually. What was illegal was people breaking into congress and looking to kidnap and execute members of congress. I don't remember that happening with previous challenges. They were done mostly quietly, ceremoniously, without fanfare, and most importantly, without an invasion and takeover of the capitol.

So yeah, I can see that after running for their lives, hiding in secured rooms, and seeing their offices and the whole building invaded and trashed, and their lives threatened, they were a little pissed off, and thought that maybe at that point it as time to drop the performance and just get the job done.

And anger that all of this bullshit about the election being stolen was the reason that this invasion happened in the first place. You know, Boxer and whoever else made challenges before did not call an army to DC and then make a speech telling them to march on congress in the blind rage of an armed mob calling for executions of the vice president and speaker of the house.

I would think the differences are fairly obvious, if you think about it.

I keep seeing people calling them traitors for trying to overrule the results of the election. If dems could question it before then why is it illegal and uncool for some republicans to do the same thing? I am not talking about the Trump supporters outside. SO no it is not clear to me what rules they broke. As I said I will look to find the answers.

so I wouldn’t waste time looking for that. If they are traitors then it’s only in the sense of inciting an insurrection with their rhetoric. Not that the mere fact of making a challenge is being a traitor. As for it being “uncool” I think my previous comment above covered that pretty well.

It isn't just social media that has cut Trump off. Spotify will no longer sell his merchandise and the company that does his email list has dropped him. What they are doing is erasing Trump's hold over his supporters. For now. But I think it is going to cause a big backlash. Which might be the point. First isolate Trump and his supporters and then impeach him so he can't run again and you are throwing gas on the fire of ramping up tensions instead of going for unity as some decry.

I have no answers to this. Just seeing what is happening and HOW FAST it is happening should worry all of us. We knew it was coming. I did not think it would happen as fast as it didn, but looking back we had signs that it would be here one day. What's next?

@snoopydawg There is so much great info in the Moon of Alabama link. As an example, this

The banning of Trump has nothing to do with the actual content of Trump's or others' communications:

Byron York @ByronYork - 23:53 UTC · Jan 8, 2021
Twitter has permanently banned President Trump, and they did it on the basis of two unobjectionable tweets. Example: Twitter says Trump's 'I won't go to inauguration' tweet will 'inspire' violence. https://blog.twitter.com/en_us/topics/c...

The was an organized and likely long planned campaign initiated by the incoming Biden administration. Trump's tweets and followers were probably the biggest traffic generators Twitter and Facebook ever had. They would not have killed off that profitable source of revenues if the incoming administration had not threatened them with new regulations.

Follow the link in the highlighted quote (immediately above) to read the two tweets that got Trump banned.

The implications of this are so very frightening. I urge everyone to read the MoA link that Snoopy has in her comment above.
