Seventeen years ago, on 19 March 2003, the US invaded Iraq.
Five coalition servicemen died this past week in Iraq, four of them were Americans.

If media attention hadn’t been fixated on Covid-19, their deaths might have raised the question of what the United States is still doing in Iraq. It’s a fair question.

I disagree. It’s not a fair question. It's insanity just on face value.
But it gets even more crazy when you factor in we are bombing Iraq again.

The spokesperson claimed the targets included military medical sites and accused the attackers of also targeting critical operations sites and violating the sanctity of a revered city for Shiite Muslims...
"The coalition strike targeted Karbala Airport, which is still under construction, with three missiles, resulting in the martyrdom of one of worker," Aysawi said in a statement sent to Newsweek by the Popular Mobilization Forces.

Bombing an airport? In a nation that is supposed to be an ally?
Naturally our "ally" wasn't happy about it.

The Iraqi Foreign Ministry released on Tuesday two identical letters sent to the U.N. Secretary-General and the U.N. Security Council in response to U.S. airstrikes that targeted five sites across central Iraq that reportedly killing at least six people, including a civilian, and wounding others.
...The two documents also "call upon the Security Council to condemn the bombing operations against the Iraqi army and civilian facilities and to assume its responsibility to prevent the United States from committing such illegal acts according to international law and to place full responsibility for the human casualties and infrastructure that resulted from the aforementioned bombing operations."

We run the U.N. Security Council, so this was all just for show.
A much more serious threat is this.

Iraq’s envoy to the UN on Tuesday threatened to arrest US troops in the country for carrying out airstrikes on Iranian-backed Iraqi militias in the country amid rising tensions between US troops and pro-Iranian groups.

The US “perpetrators will be arrested and held accountable” for the attacks on the Iraqi militias last week, said Iraq’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Mohammed Hussein Bahr Al-Uloom in a draft letter seen by Al Arabiya English.

In response the Pentagon is pulling back U.S. troops to bases that are more easily defended.
Here's an idea: why not have them defend Florida or Hawaii instead?
