“We didn’t have any self-admitted proletarians. Everyone was a temporarily embarrassed capitalist.” ~ John Steinbeck

I was a bad influence on the Beatles': James Taylor on Lennon, love and recovery

James Taylor looks out at the sprawling London skyline. “This is where it started,” he says. “The moment.” He made his first trip here in 1968, playing for Paul McCartney and George Harrison and becoming the first artist signed to the Beatles’ record label, Apple Records. This was before he moved to Laurel Canyon with the rest of the denim-draped California dreamers who defined the sound of the late 60s and far beyond. Before he met David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, Neil Young, Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, Carole King and Joni Mitchell. Before he and Mitchell fell in love. Before he wrote his pivotal album Sweet Baby James during a stint in a psychiatric hospital. Before his marriage to Carly Simon, which opened up his personal life – including his long battle with heroin addiction – to public consciousness. Before he sold 100m records, performed for the Obamas and the Clintons, and then, decades later, appeared on stage with one of the world’s biggest pop stars, Taylor Swift, who is named after him. https://www.theguardian.com/music/2020/feb/17/james-taylor-i-was-a-bad-i...

Overslept today, a brief OT, but the coffee's on and the photo of two Bialetti moka pots is from The Guardian.

most all the MSNBC pundits and 'talent' fall all over themselves in producing sentences of insinuation and innuendo against Bernie, they can hardly hold their pee/glee in doing so. Fuck 'em, remember we always have a French model when all else fails. Smile

Nevada, latest polls show tremendous lead, but shenanigans already break the surface, so, on guard.

Dug into demographics this past week and from what i see, to win against trump especially in battlegrounds, Democrats need to maintain the demographic turn-out of 2018 and add significant votes from the working class. As you know, Bernie presently has the broadest demographic appeal of all the candidates by far in most cases; so, logic has it that he is the 'electable' one.

Personally, i think people mostly vote for candidates they like and Bernie wins in favor-ability as well. Let my simple arguments win the day and the people triumph for a change.

@tle well, my water is soft and with low pH, so aluminum is not the metal of choice here in my corner of Mass. Instead, I found the Vev Vigano stainless models are perfection. I make a mug every morning using a totally Fair Trade dark roast, Marrakesih Express, from Dean's Beans. I've even given the 3 cup model to friends (i.e., 6 ounces, so 1 real coffee cup full up). Dean is a green and people-power activist and roasts some great coffees (no paid ad here!).

A thin Trade Day this AM. Temps at almost 30 degrees probably the culprit. Looks like you may have gotten some snow this week smiley. We arrived home to find our road rather well washed and eroded. There was a 6" rain in one night while we were gone that did some damage. We've had another 3-4 inches since we got home on Monday evening.

We had the easiest re-entry to the US ever. Exit the plane and a short escalator ride placed us at an almost empty Customs/passport check and we were out of the busy Atlanta airport in less than 30 min of landing. Caught a taxi for $10 to our car parked at the motel 6 (one night's stay plus 20 days of parking for $140).

Today I recycled and grocery shopped while in town. Planting peas today in the garden and planting flats of greens and lettuce for later transplanting too. Hard to wrap your head around the spring garden when it is 30 degrees...but here it comes.

Hope you all have a great day and weekend!

So difficult losing these little creatures. They become such a special part of our lives, the stark hole they leave behind is quite unbearable. I'm working on writing a memorial about Pierre but it's been slow going. It's cathartic, but how much crying can one subject themselves to? Cognitive functions also being compromised, my creative brain feels fogged in for now. But no matter. Whenever I do finish writing the memorial of her life, I'll publish it here.

My heart is happy to hear of your son's visit. Bright spots are always welcome!

So, needless to say, today, I was very saddened for you, and your Son and his Family, to see that he's already passed on. Give rose I know he was a wonderful companion, and friend.

I was trying real hard to remember if you had posted a photo of him in the past--somehow, I was 'thinking' that he was a deep, almost reddish gold. At any rate, it brings it home for us that we may not have "Rambo" with us, for as long as we've had most of our other furbabies. Especially, in light of her current/congenital health issues.

Please pass along my condolences to your Family when they visit. I'm sure it will be a great comfort to all of you, to spend time together.

We're got a project we're working on for our local Senior Citizen's Center, to begin in May. More on that later.

BTW, I'm thinking I saw that you were trying to get another med (a while back). I sure hope that worked out for you. Know you've got some real dedicated Docs, who diligently work on your behalf.

Take care. Be well.

being able to kibitz with you, especially, here at your always interesting and inspiring Saturday OTs! Wink

Right now, Mr M and I are enjoying his newly embarked-upon retirement, just here in our community, especially since we've gotten more engaged in a number of 'senior' activities/organizations that we had never bothered to explore. Also, we're waiting to see how Coronavirus develops/spreads, since we both have relatively seriously compromised immune systems. Right now, it'd be foolish (for us) to travel outside the US.

As scr*wed up as this Administration is, we're relieved to see that it seems to be taking strong measures to avoid the spread of the virus. We're mostly spending time on the Eastern Shore, but, still run north every few weeks, due to Family matters. Anyhoo, as our luck would have it, there was a scare not too far down the road (regarding a traveler who was quarantined after returning from China). Thankfully, it was a false alarm.

Having said all that, we are still very interested in relocating to SA--most likely, Uruguay or Argentina (possibly, initially Paraguay, because citizenship there can be obtained/bought for practically nothing, in no time). IOW, it might be smart to get Paraguayan citizenship; then, proceed to explore/consider 2-3 other countries for permanent residence. Easy peasy! Wink

Right now, my personal goal is to get well enough to start Rambo's nose/scent training by late Spring/early Summer. There are a couple of different types of competitive tracking activities, and I'm still learning about/checking them out.

Take care.

Actually, not sure that Mr M and I could command such a degree of obedience under the same circumstances, now that she's been back with us for a couple months. Biggrin However, when everything shakes out a bit, gonna take a shot at AKC nose (scent) training, hopefully for (fun) competition. Not to get ahead of myself, or anything! During my hiatus, I've thought of her several times. I'm on a new computer, and don't have a photo album, yet, or, I'd post one of the adorable photos of her, as a tribute. Currently, Mr M and I are just trying to stay well, after illness, and repeated relapses. We've actually taken to being hermits, to avoid flu, etc. At least we've broadened our horizons a bit--we now order almost everything, including groceries, online. (A temporary measure, of course.)

Still enjoy reading your excellent OT's. Happy that QMS graciously filled in for you--hope you give yourself a break, and, plenty of time to heal.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) leads in first preference in the Nevada Democratic caucuses, according to Edison Media Research, which conducts the network entrance poll. The assessment is based on entrance poll interviews with both early voters and caucus attendees.

He's sweeping the 45 and under age group and has a slight lead in 45 and over, basically tied with a few others in the old age group

The best negative spin they could come up with is that Sanders hasn't declared victory with 3% of the caucuses reporting. The MSM, DNC, etc. were braced for a strong showing by Sanders in NV -- but nothing close to what their seeing in the early reports.

that Mayo Pete claimed that the Culinary Workers were rejecting Sanders. Sanders hit back on that, but it still could have done some damage.

Not sure if it's warranted but as only 4% of precincts have been reported and this is now like seven hours after the end of the caucuses, I'm getting suspicious. As with Iowa, a "glitch" can downplay the results or even fix the results to reduce Sanders delegate count and increase it for all the others for the current news cycle. Fixing the results is a dangerous play only if the Sanders campaign doesn't pack up and leave NV and the NV DP can rat-f*** the next round as they did in 2016. Team Sanders must get every precinct selected Sanders' delegate to the county conventions and have the means to quickly report the insertion of any NV-DP substitutes.

precincts plus the exit polls of the 70,000 early voters which they added onto through the day.

So their win margins are forecast from there, i'm fairly confident in saying that. Not to worry he's going to win at least two to one to second place, if not 2.5, and the night belongs to those candidates trying to reach 15%

A smashing. And Bernie's the first candidate of any party to win Iowa, NH and NV.

up

@smiley7
"The networks had teams out in precincts plus the exit polls of the 70,000 early voters which they added onto through the day."

Networks/cable don't spend the resources necessary to do that -- assuming they even have the skill to do it. When did the networks decide that exit polls are valid again? How do they fold those 70,000 early voter numbers, with ranked choices, into the precincts? Haven't even seen any media estimates of voter turnout at the caucuses which is far easier to provide than caucus results.

Current reports (only 23% so far) have Warren doing significantly worse than the average of her polling numbers and after she was accorded a boffo debate performance. Klobuchar had a polling average of 9.5% and is currently at 3.3% (in her post caucus interview Amy said that she did much better than expected). Both may do better in their raw vote totals (if NV delivers those as they claimed they would) but failed viability in too many precincts.

At this point, the slow reporting of the results -- not a difficult task -- has made me suspicious. Good outcome for Sanders at 46% will carry a different narrative than if the true results had him at 55%.

Ah, now see Mayo Pete is picking up steam. Have zero insight as to those that have him as their first choice. (Okay I also struggle on that question wrt Biden, but in his case DP institutional support kicks in for him in NV and is expected in SC. OTOH, that also exists in IA, but didn't materialize for him.)

When all the numbers come in my provisional suspicions may abate. Hope so because it's not healthy to let undue suspicions devolve into paranoia.

My weapon of choice ... although mine is silver rather than white:

The wide, heavy base is a plus. Also, it's actually made in Italy.

Ours sees use constantly. I love a press, too.

Found out an odd thing about the fear of aluminum in these pots. Evidently, Italians don't let soap and water see their pots. Rather, they simply rinse them which allows a coating of a type to form. According to those who promote such behavior, the aluminum is no longer a factor once the coating has formed. I used to wash my old original Bialetti with soap. I never knew not to do it. My 40 year old Bialetti bit the dust about five years ago, and my current Top Moka four-cup model replaced it. No soap for it. Coffee seems better, too. Maybe that's just me. By the way, my first-generation Italian wife says her grandmother never did anything to hers but rinse it.

a little soap and water shouldn't be a problem.

unlike iron oxide (i.e., rust), which is porous, aluminum oxide forms a superthin coating, impervious to water or air, on any aluminum surface. it's actually almost black, but it's so thin that it's practically transparent. if you scrub the inside or outside of any non-anodized aluminum object, in a pan of warm water, with or without soap, you will see the water getting darker -- especially if you're using a metal scouring pad.

on the other hand, I've read that putting an anodized aluminum pot/pan in a dishwasher can destroy the anodized surface.

and on the other other hand, i'm not too inclined to be questioning the Italians on the particulars of making excellent coffee. I almost bought one of these gadgets at Goodwill a couple of weeks ago, for 3 or 4 dollars.

@UntimelyRippd

Interesting fact: in aviation, when repairing an aluminum part or structure that was bare metal, we always did a process we called "Mil-Spec and Alodine." What it amounted to was washing the new bare-metal part with some soap known to us on the line as "Mil-Spec soap" (yes, abbreviated from Military Specification), and then slathering the part in Alodine for a short period of time. After the alloted time elapsed, you rinsed the Alodine off with fresh water. Alodine is a type of chromate conversion coating. It formed a super thin layer of corrosion in order to stop further corrosion. I understand there are other reasons for applying it to metals, but for us, its use was as a corrosion inhibitor.

I think you may be right about screwing up the anodized surfaces in a dishwasher. Some seem to be able to take it; others not so much. With aircraft, nearly every machined aluminum part was anodized. If you messed up that surface, you were soon looking at aluminum oxide formation. Usually scrap heap time then, unless you caught it early.

We had crazy terms for some of the corrosion inhibitor coatings. For instance, on magnesium parts, they were considered "pickled" when they had it ... and they almost all did.

I considered using Alodine on my Moka pot, then thought better of it. Heh.

oxygen to form Aluminum oxide. It is a very tough non-reactive material that protects the underlying aluminum and is insoluble in water. It is what rubies are made of. You can, if you like, even wash it with soap if you like. It should not react with anything you are remotely likely to eat or drink whether washed or not. It forms almost instantly, so even if you were able to chip or scrape some off of a chunk or aluminum, another layer would be immediately in place.

I'm thinking that the practice of not washing moka pots with soap and water so that a coating forms, came from the (mostly) debunked theory linking aluminum to dementia. I remember hearing about that quite a bit 40+ years ago. There are still many people today who refuse to cook with aluminum pots and pans due to that.

Me, I like stainless steel and iron. More worried about the various non-stick coatings...

the Bloomberg troll farm is here:

Twitter suspends 70 pro-Bloomberg 'spam' accounts

Twitter announced Friday that it is suspending 70 accounts that posted content supporting Mike Bloomberg’s presidential campaign, saying the messages violated its company rules.

Bloomberg, the former mayor of New York City, has launched an expansive social media campaign to buoy his White House bid. One prong of the strategy involves hiring temporary employees to launch an array of Twitter accounts that post identical messages, a tactic the social media site said amounted to spam and "platform manipulation."

“We have taken enforcement action on a group of accounts for violating our rules against platform manipulation and spam,” a Twitter official told The Hill regarding the suspensions, which were first reported by The Los Angeles Times.

Get this:

The temporary employees recruited by Bloomberg’s camp are given the title “deputy field organizer” and make $2,500 a month to promote his White House bid among their followers. The employees can choose to use campaign-approved language in their posts.

And this:

Twitter said the practice violated its “Platform Manipulation and Spam Policy,” which was established in 2019 to respond to Russia’s expansive troll network that was tapped in 2016 to meddle in the U.S. elections.

Well, not that last bit; there wasn't a Russian "expansive troll network." That requires serious cash as what Bloomberg and the USG possess.

How is Putin trying to interfere in the 2020 elections? So, Bernie believes what 'the intelligence community' tells him about Russia?

Looking at it from far away and at the same time being closer to Russia and having lots of people in Germany who remember having suffered under the Sowjet Union's little brother in former East Germany, one gets the feeling that total brainwashing has permanently damaged the American psyche.

NOw I wonder, if the Russians are also meddling in the German elections ... it's getting ridiculouser and ridiculouser.

You haven't answered my question. What exactly is it that makes Putin a thug? To How low standards is the campaign rhetoric's wording to fall?

It's going down into the dumpster and there it stinks. I am disappointed about that kind of campaign rhetoric and about you not answering the question. You know where the wars between the US and Russia are fought? In Germany. Thank you very much. I don't think that many Germans of the 99 percent feel threatened by Russia today. But some of our German political kiss ass cowards feel it is necessary to adjust to the demands of US political figures' campaign propaganda.

And that has nothing to do with the fact, that if I were physically located inside the US, I would support Sanders (and Tulsi) a lot aside from donating to both.

But that clip of Sanders has the sensitivity of an elephant in the china store and imo is plain dumb. Pfft.

I would also probably be easily enraged, short-tempered, stressed out, irrational, and just generally insane, if I were married to a Gorgon.

The earth is a multibillion-year-old sphere.
The Nazis killed millions of Jews.
On 9/11/01 a Boeing 757 (AA77) flew into the Pentagon.
AGCC is happening.
If you cannot accept these facts, I cannot fake an interest in any of your opinions.

@UntimelyRippd
no more women would want to be married to Carville than men would want to be married to Matalin.

hand, I would have no problem suggesting that her choice of spouse might be influencing her mental state.

And if the subject at hand were one of hers, I would have cheerfully made my snarky little joke in the other direction.

Though if I had to bet, I'd bet that he is a less unpleasant person in ordinary interaction. He might be cheerful and easygoing with their housekeeper, for example, but she -- she just seems mean, and she always has. But maybe it's all just part of the act, who knows.

wouldn't use boomer as a slur and throw us all into the Trump and Clinton pots.

Those in the boomer generation that are now neoliberalcons weren't liberals when they were young. No amount of fashionable drugs, sex, and rock-n-roll turns a conservative into a liberal.

Carville, Matthews, and the others are reinforcing HRC's 'baskets of deplorables.' So much disdain for people that just want a little bit fairer system that relieves them from living paycheck to paycheck their entire lives while assholes like Carville, etc. get to enjoy the life of a multi-millionaire with no discernible talent or skill. As Trump demonstrates everyday, trashing others isn't hard work.

at the Bernie rally in San Antonio this evening. The crowd was very enthusiastic and the place was stuffed to the gills. At least this time we didn't have to trek up to Austin to see Bernie.

Good on Nevada...sounds like good news.
Heading to bed...long day.
Thanks for the OT smiley, best to you.

@smiley7 Glad I was there as well. I just wanted to show my support and add to the numbers. I'm not sure how many showed up yet, but the crowd looked impressive.
Hope you have a fine Sunday, I know you will have a great cup of coffee for starters Smile
