Yang Gang Keen on Tulsi

After New Hampshire, Tulsi is on a plane today to South Carolina to campaign there, wisely skipping Nevada (because that's going to be a complete sh*%show).

Since Yang dropped out, Reddit has been littered with comments from Yang's supporters saying they are joining the "Tulsi Posse". One essay there starts: "College student from Yang Gang here. You guys [Tulsi supporters] look like you could use an enthusiastic internet army!"

Tulsi's interest in a Universal Basic Income (UBI), which Yang essentially brought to the table, has made many who supported him interested in Tulsi's candidacy.

The Tulsi and Yang campaigns have been very friendly towards each other--even before Tulsi's interest in UBI--so with Yang's exit from the race, this could bode unexpectedly well for Tulsi moving forward. Below are some examples of reddit essays being posted, and the list goes on . . .

Let's see how South Carolina and SuperTuesday play out . . .

Based on what I saw on Twitter, the Yang Gang was probably the most enthusiastic and committed group along with Tulsi supporters. When Andrew Yang announced on Twitter that he was suspending his campaign last night, a lot of the highest profile and most enthusiastic Tulsi supporters immediately went over to Andrew Yang's Twitter and posted positive comments about him saying that they hoped they would hear more from him in the future. Yang's supporters are among the youngest around and this Tulsi supporter welcomes any and all who wish to join our movement.

@apenultimate I never met a Yang supporter who was negative toward either Tulsi or Bernie, unlike some of the other candidates' supporters. Based upon my own limited and anecdotal experience, Yang's supporters are the kind of people any campaign would love to have...energetic, enthusiastic, and positive.

@mimi of the Democratic candidates according to this article.

Yang is estimated to have a net worth of $1 million, according to Forbes.

However, The Wall Street Journal reported last May that his assets are between $834,000 and $2.4 million, which puts him close to Sen. Bernie Sanders, who Forbes estimates is worth $2.5 million. But he is behind some of the other frontrunners.

IMHO, Yang is comfortable, but not close to being an oligarch.

I didn't buy into the idea of Universal Basic Income. Sounded to me like a bribe for the poor folks. Somewhere the money for that Universal Basic Income has to come from, and I wouldn't know, why those poor folks would like to be dependent on those 'money donors'.

I go beyond things I can understand. I guess I am then unfair to Yang. I am learning. Thanks for the responses.

@mimi His signature issue is Universal Basic Income, which is certainly an interesting concept. He was also, as far as I can tell, a genuine proponent of Medicare for All. One thing that has bothered me is that supposed proponents of MFA make such weak arguments for it during debates. This is slightly true of Sanders but certainly true Warren for example, who is utterly unconvincing. Yang, however, in one debate made the very strong argument that MFA would be a great boon to small businesses in that it would save them money and greatly simplify the process of getting health care for your employees. My take on Yang is that he is genuine, unlike Buttigieg, for example, who is a neoliberal (CIA?) shill.

strangely I never thought the Universal Basic Income idea was revolutionary. If the intentions were good-hearted, which they might have been, I thought they were a little pipe-dreaming naively enthusiastic, but not realistic. Of course I have no facts to back up my guts' feelings about him up. I might have been really unfair. I will follow him to see what comes out of him.

But as long as we have income tax it will be seen as wealth transfer, not everyone sharing in prosperity.

I;ll make the radical proposal to drop the personal income tax entirely and have only a corporate income tax. When recessions occur, there is automatic stimulus. In boom times, there is a check on inflation.

This does assume that the USA actually produces wealth instead of importing it from China.

in the large field, never cranky or negative. I was interested in his effort a year ago when he got in, and like the UBI idea. But as more of his other policies came forth, I found they were disappointingly standard fare, so not in keeping with his revolutionary UBI proposal.

Someone elsewhere made the comment that for a candidate whose slogan was simply MATH, Yang failed to calculate properly the wisdom of devoting so many campaign resources to Iowa when NH was his more favorable terrain.

I wouldn't mind seeing him run for Congress soon, preferably to replace one of the Blue Dogs. His national exposure and positive campaign will help him in that effort.

First of all I get less than $800 a month on Social Security and I couldn't afford to live where I do without the section 8 rental subsidy and I rely upon food stamps (and the food bank)to survive. One lady who used to live in this building once told me that if she only got $20.00 less a month on her check she would qualify for over a hundred dollars in food stamps, instead of the $35.00 a month available,if she wanted to mess with all the paperwork.

That said, the way I understand it if my income jumped up a thousand dollars all those things would be gone and collectively they worth more.

First off whenever the pittance that comes from the SS COLA upgrade each year happens (when it does happen)I immediately get a letter telling me that due to my "increase in income" my food stamps are being reduced by almost the same amount (I'm at $92.00m a month now). So kiss that goodbye.

That's the least of the damage, the change in my rent is a big one because I would no longer have section8 housing assistance and without that my rent would go from $233.00 a month to $785.00 a month. Big jump.
I would also lose assistance I get each year with my electric bills because everything here is electrical, and I have everything on a power strip but keep that bill low by not leaving any lights on when they are not needed and by dressing warmly in the winter to keep from having to turn on the heater.
But in this small apartment I have almost forty houseplants (one grandson calls it PaPa's jungle) so I have to turn on the heat sometimes. Not a big change here but it all adds up.

I'm undoubtedly forgetting a few other things but SS worries me the most, in fact when I asked the local office about making some side money by being a 'process server' ($75.00 a pop) I was told it wasn't a concern but she said that without looking at my file first she wasn't sure how much I would be allowed to make without reporting it to them. Which doesn't sound good.

Like I said I'm probably forgetting a few other things but say I get that $1,000 a month and all those changes what happens if the very next Congress puts an end to it all ? Both sides are big on beating the deficit drum so that could happen.
Then what happens?
It took me almost two years to get on section 8 housing, and that was twelve years ago. Now it's a lot longer, in fact they didn't accept any applications for a few years, and when the lady downstairs inquired the answer was there were no applications, do it online and wait. That was about a year ago, still no word.

I'll add this, there are only a couple of people in this building that are not on section 8 housing, and I know of no apartment complex without people on section 8, with the exception of the ones rented out by students at WWU.

So what happens to me and the damn near countless others across the Country that are in the same situation if the UBI happens?

@aliasalias perfectly some of the most important issues with UBI. While it sounds great, nice easy "solution" to get rid of "complexity" it sure does not address how that complexity actually functions. Math indeed. Easy math without taking the true reality of the rot of neo liberal capitalism in any real way. That's my problem with the yang gang, easy "solutions" that are anything but. No thanks.

And of course his goal is to look like the pragmatist in the room, must address that deficit but do not address how it came to be (hint, social programs are NOT the issue there) but somewhere along the way he's badly screwed up the math. 1000 a month is no where near what it takes to actually live anywhere in this country. And he sure ought to know that as a technocratic math driven wunderkind, right?

@aliasalias on an optional, opt-in basis. You can take it if it works for you, otherwise just continue on govt assistance as before.

I doubt very much Yang's idea was to put millions at the poverty level in jeopardy of becoming homeless, etc. Meanwhile the UBI would help many millions struggling to live paycheck to paycheck. An extra $12k/yr for these people would be a huge difference in their lives.

@aliasalias

that keeps people in poverty. Get a bump in funds for one thing? Blam your other benefit get cut down by that amount as you said. And like you said if you want to make some extra money it comes with a limit. Go over $1,300 when you're on Medicaid you owe for anything it's paid for the month. $1 over? Congrats you now owe them possibly thousands. Can't pay it? You better find a way.

It took me almost two years to get on section 8 housing, and that was twelve years ago. Now it's a lot longer, in fact they didn't accept any applications for a few years, and when the lady downstairs inquired the answer was there were no applications, do it online and wait. That was about a year ago, still no word.

The wait time across the country is beyond ridiculous because no one is building affordable housing, but they damn sure are getting breaks to build high density apartments everywhere. Or if someone does want to build it then they get met with the NIMBYs who think people who are money challenged are bad people and they don't want their property values to go down.

But many people better get off that bandwagon because every day more families are falling through the cracks of this rigged for the elite system.

Many cities are doing ubi with no strings attached and it's working. People don't buy new cars and other expensive things with it. They are going to the doctor or dentist or other things that they have had to put off for too long.

This system is what Bernie is trying to end. The rigged, socialism for the upper classes and corporations. Can anyone explain why oil companies need tax breaks and subsidies? Look at how much profit Amazon made last year and how much tax they paid on it. Zero, but then they got millions back anyway. Rigged!

@The Voice In the Wilderness I never said the following so where are you getting that quote, because I certainly did not say "I got mine and it was hard to get so I don't want anyone else to get it easy."

First of all you don't know me and I don't have respond to your insult but I'm not letting this slide by without comment and I don't give a damn whether or not you like it,or if you choose to believe anything I write below.

You have no idea about what I've done to help people get section 8 help, hence the reason I know about the neighbor's circumstance so well.
You can have no idea about how much food I've redistributed from the food bank to other residents in this building...over the years, every single week (including today which is why I hadn't responded earlier) , or my participation in local activism and I could talk about other very 'social' things but I'm just dealing with a knee jerk insult from a stranger on the internet who really doesn't warrant any explanation as to why people, and not just myself, have to wonder about the possible consequences of the UBI in their lives.

Shorter answer, I enjoy helping people very much and I want everyone to do well in life, even jerks, and if the UBI will help people lead a better life then I'm all for it.

In closing, I honestly don't care if you believe anything I've written, even a little of it and I can say, in all sincerity, I don't give a damn. I just couldn't let your insult just sit out there unanswered.

That said, according to comments above I'm glad to read the UBI is not mandatory and I'll share that information with other tenants which should easy some minds in this building for sure. Some have heard some wild things about it.

Back to my original comment. You read it twice and you missed this? No clue here for you that this is not just about me?
A lot of people have these same questions and for very good reasons for which I gave examples.

"I'll add this, there are only a couple of people in this building that are not on section 8 housing, and I know of no apartment complex without people on section 8, with the exception of the ones rented out by students at WWU.

So what happens to me and the damn near countless others across the Country that are in the same situation if the UBI happens?"
Does that sound like it's all about me?

Bottom line, anyone on section 8 that doesn't consider it a question worth getting an answer, especially with the elderly, is a fool and no one here is that, in fact I'm certain some will have to see it in writing on whatever they deem as a 'reliable source'.
Adios.

He was probably sincere, but he was essentially a fraud. His campaign, policy wise, was three pronged: UBI, MFA, and Let the rich get away with whatever they want. I'll go in reverse order:
His idea of regulation and taxation is "We can't stop them, so don't try." He proposed to replace (though he did not admit it) Progressive income and corporate taxes with a VAT - a highly regressive consumption tax that will be borne almost entirely by the poor and working classes.
His support of MFA is probably sincere, but it could also be a further ad campaign for him. "Give the people what they want, especially if businessmen save a lot of money in the process." In fairness he seems to be a shill for comsumer capitalism rather than finance capitalism.
I've spoken ad nauseum against the UBI fraud, so I'll just say that it's essentially print money and give it to people in insufficient amounts so that they will be forced to spend it all rather than invest it - the rich wind up with it all. It not only replaces food stamps, it replaces a laundry list of programs that are collectively much more than $1000/month. It will increase rather than decrease poverty, increase wealth inequality while making it more visible, and increase consumer debt.

So, I often miss something that all of you know about, because you follow personalities like Yang in detail over in the US. I apologize to have voiced my feelings about Yang, which I should not have made, because they were based on basically nothing.

I never heard about how he would get the money for the UBI. It was very likely that I missed that, because I really didn't pay any attention to him and had not seen clips of him through coverage here on C99p before the presidential campaign started.
