The Bolivian Coup is as bad as we feared

Former Bolivian President Evo Morales arrived in Mexico City today. He fled for his life and is now in exile.
So guess who was one of the first people to enter the presidential palace?

When Luis Fernando Camacho stormed into Bolivia’s abandoned presidential palace in the hours after President Evo Morales’s sudden November 10 resignation, he revealed to the world a side of the country that stood at stark odds with the plurinational spirit its deposed socialist and Indigenous leader had put forward.

With a Bible in one hand and a national flag in the other, Camacho bowed his head in prayer above the presidential seal, fulfilling his vow to purge his country’s Native heritage from government and “return God to the burned palace.”
...
Virtually unknown outside his country, where he had never won a democratic election, Camacho stepped into the void. He is a rich and powerful multi-millionaire named in the Panama Papers, and an ultra-conservative Christian fundamentalist groomed by a fascist paramilitary notorious for its racist violence, with a base in Bolivia’s wealthy separatist region of Santa Cruz.

Camacho also hails from a family of corporate elites who have long profited from Bolivia’s plentiful natural gas reserves. And his family lost part of its wealth when Morales nationalized the nation’s resources, in order to fund his vast social programs — which cut poverty by 42 percent and extreme poverty by 60 percent.

In the lead-up to the coup, Camacho met with leaders from right-wing governments in the region to discuss their plans to destabilize Morales. Two months before the putsch, he tweeted gratitude: “Thank you Colombia! Thank you Venezuela!” he exclaimed, tipping his hat to Juan Guaido’s coup operation. He also recognized the far-right government of Jair Bolsonaro, declaring, “Thank you Brazil!”

This fascist coup was a long time coming.
The Bolivian people are about to suffer. Bolivia has been ruled by fascists before.
But there is one last bit of news that may indicate "why now?"

The Sunday military coup in Bolivia has put in place a government which appears likely to reverse a decision by just-resigned President Evo Morales to cancel an agreement with a German company for developing lithium deposits in the Latin American country for batteries like those in electric cars.
...
The Morales move on Nov. 4 to cancel the December 2018 agreement with Germany's ACI Systems Alemania (ACISA) came after weeks of protests from residents of the Potosí area. The region has 50% to 70% of the world's lithium reserves in the Salar de Uyuni salt flats.

Among other clients, ACISA provides batteries to Tesla; Tesla's stock rose Monday after the weekend.

Ecuador people still fighting

This summer, a court in Ecuador issued a ruling with profound implications for the urgent fight to save the imperiled Amazon rainforest. The decision effectively blocked a planned government oil auction that threatened half-a-million acres of some of the world’s most biodiverse primary rainforest.

The broad outlines of the situation are sadly familiar to similar cases found throughout the Amazon region: In pursuit of foreign investment, the government sought to partner with foreign firms to develop large swaths of ecologically fragile rainforest. As is often the case, these forests were the ancestral lands of Indigenous inhabitants who were not informed about — and did not approve — the arrival of industry on their territory.

The Waorani villagers who are plaintiffs in the case have millennia-deep roots in the region. They have seen the effects of oil blocks in other parts of the Ecuadorian Amazon, and knew that the planned auction threatened their survival and way of life. They also knew their rights: Like all Indigenous peoples, they hold an internationally recognized right to informed consent when it comes to the “development” of their ancestral lands.

People of Chile take it to the next level

State workers in Chile promised to launch a massive, nationwide walk-off early on Tuesday, a sign protesters were not yet satisfied following the government’s decision to rewrite the country’s heavily critiqued dictatorship-era constitution.
...
Truck drivers and protesters set up barricades on Tuesday on at least two major highways connecting the capital Santiago with outlying cities and ports, prompting huge back-ups on key regional arteries.

The road blockages prompted the Valparaiso-based upper and lower chambers of congress to suspend activities for the day.

Lawmakers said the move was “unprecedented” with one, Marcelo Diaz, a socialist, telling local TV: “Today more than ever congress needs to be making an effort to work at an accelerated pace because the people are demanding that we find concrete solutions.”

maybe he is pissed because he just had his body exhumed and moved.

What do you want to bet that there is Vatican money behind this guy too? The history of the Roman Catholic Church is rife with the massacres of pagans and the destruction of their property. It must have really galled them to have the pagan Morales in charge.

Amazing how quickly the themes were published in major American media and social media outlets. There are videos showing right wing violence which don't make it into the Western media. I fear the right wing violence will get worse and worse as they have nothing to fear from a Western black lash.

The asset stripping of South America and the extermination of indigenous rights will proceed as planned. Above all, this is a resource war with China. The people of South America never had a prayer.

The entire 21st Century, from sElection 2000 onward, has just been a relentless blitzkrieg of injustice - and maybe that isn't even an accident.

I'm inclined to agree with the Pope on this one: World War III is happening right now - just in fragments....

@The Liberal Moonbat Given the nature of what's actually going on, maybe this is at long-last the real-deal final showdown between capitalism and freedom...
