Alt Friday OT -- Mending Fences
All things on earth point home in old October; sailors to sea, travellers to walls and fences, hunters to field and hollow and the long voice of the hounds, the lover to the love he has forsaken. -- Thomas Wolfe
Welcome to the Friday OT. Filling-in for the 'funky friday' edition until NCTim rejoins us.
Traveling back down memory lane to some of the challenges of working on the farm. Struggling with strangulating branches and vines along the fence rows, overgrown with thorny bushes, burdocks and stick-tights. Hacking back and mounding up tangles. All just to gain access to the failing fences. The repairs were the fun part, after all that. Symbolic of a theme played over and again in ensuing years. Although the tangled materials have morphed into social and psyche issues, the play is similar.

The door is open, stage is set. Have at it!

Good Morning, QMS,
heh, you don't need a farm to have all those nice things like "strangulating branches and vines along the fence rows, overgrown with thorny bushes, burdocks and stick-tights. All just to gain access to the failing fences".
I am supposed to struggle all those in the garden of my sister, who has all that plus very complicated neighbors. We have failed fences and the fight is over who pays what to repair the holes. Common ivy destroyed the fence. We also fight about branches from our trees hanging over to their property. They cut them off and throw them over in our porperty, so that we take care of getting the branches and pay for their disposal, as we have so many, we can't handle them anymore. Everything in angle of the view of my sister from where she sits on the patio is a manicured lawn for absolutly no use. Every other aspect of the garden is not her 'problem'. Enemy number one here is common Ivy. I am not fighting it anymore. Capitulated.
What's on my mind? Bloomberg! If Bernie can't win against Trump and Tulsi can't win, I take Bloomberg as an alternative. Am I a traitor? At least he is richer than Trump, isn't he?
Have to read gjohnsit's piece about it first.
Have a good day and thanks for the OT.

Good day mimi
Hacking back the tangles is better than pouring on the Round-up, no?
Enjoy your little patch best you can.

Good morning, QMS ~~
Thanks for filling in for our friend.
I almost forgot - HAPPY FRIDAY!
Silly season is getting sillier by the minute as the DNC cannot stomach Bernie rising like crème! I see real revolution on the horizon. Buckle your seatbelts - 2020 is going to be one hell of a year!
Have a beautiful day and weekend, folks!

Once again the DNC shows its true colors
They have a winnable candidate in Sanders. But.
Too far left for the establishment.
So float a another billionaire instead. Sheesh

The proof is in the tweet!
These people can't help themselves from being haters!

Don't fence me in...
I started singing that one after Trumpolini started his wall. Roy and Trigger make quite a show piece out of the song...
I think Cole Porter wrote this for a movie that was never made.
Better to avoid round up, but vinegar can be used safely.

Another trick is to cover over the fence with a heavy tarp or old carpet and starve the vegetation of sunlight. Of course that would be a small fence strategy.
Well I hope you all have a nice day and a great weekend. Sounds like you finished up your sailing trip QMS. Hope things are well on the home front!

A pleasant read before the day's work sets in.
Musing on ivy. Our only wild ivy here is poison ivy. Beautiful bright red in the fall. Touch it at your peril. Some only need to stand next to it. There's a political allegory in there somewhere!
Cheers to all!

Reminder that mango peel, sap, leaves etc. contain same compound
as poison ivy, oak, and sumac: urushiol.
Something to be aware of if you come to Hawaii and are allergic to the stuff. Even just standing under a mango tree can trigger a reaction in those sensitized.

Glad you had a good cruise, QMS
I went on a cruise on the Danube. As the boat entered Vienna, the ship's sound system started blasting out "The Blue Danube". I was on the top deck, thank goodness nobody else was around, and I did quite a ballet solo.
Anyway, it was so beautiful, I was overwhelmed.
I was free, not fenced in!

good morning q
and everyone
Just got back from a walk in the Pogonip. It's fall. Wonderful leaves falling and filling the path. Yesterday I wnet to Stanford to hear Katherine Heyho speak. She is a climate scientist that wants people to start talking about the climate crisis. She had some great insights. I posted this earlier but here it is again, her ted talk:

These cat advent calendars came in yesterday and we already sold out of the first order. Love them!!! I bought half a dozen and plan to give them out to feline friends and family on Thanksgiving as a sort of pre-Xmas gift. Funny thing is, we also have dog advent calendars (which I posted here last year), but the majority of calls we are getting is for the cat calendars. Hahaha!
Any one interested in these as gift ideas, I suggest you call Trader Joe's and have them put your cat calendars on hold when they come in. They are $5.99.
Thanks QMS for hosting today's OT!

Will you post the dawg one?
My grandma made our event calendar and oh what a joy it was to have my turn to open one pocket up and pin it on the tree. Remembering that kind loving woman is something I do often. I'd get in trouble and have to sit in the hall. But it's boring I'd say and I have nothing to do. She'd tell me to twiddle my thumbs. I'd say each time I don't know how to do it and so she would teach me all over again.. one of my fondest memories.
That's a really nice memory :)

Thanks for posting it
It's really cute. But my heart will always be with the Xmas tree one. I really was lucky to have my grandparents during my early years. I hate to think what I'd be like without their love.
Car calendars?
Tidy box in the back seat.
What I love about cooking. Got a bunch of leftover cornbread and squash. Searched for said combo and found a squash-corn chowder looking mighty fine. To adapt, naturally.
Had to burn some logs to ward off the chill wind. Have a pleasant one.

Obama / Trump border fence breached
Saw a pic yesterday of how someone with a simple battery operated sawzall cut thru the ballards of the renowned border fence, but couldn't find it today. Reported that 9287 documented holes have been cut in the last 5 years. About 4 holes a day.
Who let the dogs out?

Hi QMS
Thank you for all the different notes and images your OT creates. The Thomas Wolfe quote is so moody and pensive. The Strauss piece is so light and gay.
I hope your weekend is as you like it.

story goes with
Dinged the fender a few years ago. had a bernie sticker, so pasted it over to cover the damage (knicked the well head). here it is 4 years later. Sticker still there. For some windy reason, the top right lost it's sticky. Somehow it covered the 16. Stuck some scotch tape on the corner to keep it from flapping. Now just says 20. Go figure.

I hope they both stick,
