Monday Open Thread: January 14 is the Feast of the Ass

January 14 is the 14th day of the year
It is also Prickle-Prickle, Chaos 14, 3184 YOLD (discordian)
And let us not forget 13.0.6.2.15 by the Mayan Long Count

Nah, not that ass. This was a most holy medieval Christian ceremony, until, of course, it wasn't. Eternal immutable truthinesses are like that I guess. At any rate, it was sort of like a tent revival call and response thing, except that it made the relationship between the hoi polloi down in the pews and their exalted superiors up in front of them really really clear in that the most holy sacerdote would do the call in latin, and the hoi polloi would bray like a mule in response. I'm not making this up either.

Good Morning, el, this is for lotlizard
@lotlizard
I just read that the building of the German Newspaper 'taz' has been attacked by what is called the 'identitäre Bewegung' ...
Angriff auf Redaktionsgebäude der 'taz'
As lotlizard was closely involved with the 'taz' I wanted to know more about it. It all scares me a lot. Thanks for letting me post this here. And have a good day.
BTWt I read somewhere that Bolton is the greatest threat to the US and Germany as well as other European countries, right behind is Mr. Grennell, for sure the most hated US ambassador to Germany ever, they call him the little Trump and ask themselves why should he behave any better than his boss.
So, I am certainly no Russia foot-licking RT bot, but I know a dangerous bully when I see and hear one.

Good morning, mimi, and thank YOU for posting. I was,
not unexpectedly, unaware of the attack on 'taz' or the existence of the attackers. Wiki says:
(all of the ellipsis replace footnote labels)
Being attacked by such is a sign of merit in my eyes. We'll just have to hope lotl pops in to give us a run-down.
Meanwhile, always good to hear from you and catch up to your perspective on things.
Have a good one.

Bray like an ass...
Sounds like US politicians to me. Just consider last weeks address first by ole tiny hands and then the dim response by Tweedledumb and Tweedledumber. Three jackasses braying is an appropriate analogy dontcha think?
Too bad all their manure is a pollutant rather than compost.
Wonder if they can step dance like this:

Good morning, lookout. I have tried to design my life so that
I hear as little original content from the professional politicos as possible, generally only when somebody puts some of their drivel up for the purposes of mockery.
I watched the video with the sound off and just assume that it is some sort of youthful excess, given the calmness of the adult critter in the background.
Possibly a lazy day here. Mondays we normally walk up at the lake and were geared up to do so today, but forecast says rain, so maybe not. I just finished binge-writing a ton of OTs, so I get some time off from that to look after personal business and travel, so rain would push me into, gasp, idleness. Heh.

Good morning, el ~~
Let’s see what this week brings!
Thanks for the tunes!
Have a beautiful day, everyone!

Guns in church
Wanted to leave this in an OT comment somewhere. Last week I became aware of a local church in our small town that has complete video surveillance, many armed parishioners, plus they lock all of the doors during their services. Oh . . . and an armed guard in the parking lot.
Freaked me out when I heard it. First response . . . isn't this a million miles away from the whole jesus thing?
But there have been church shootings, some here in Texas. The churches all seem to be of a fundamentalist flavor. Haven't heard about anyone shooting up lutherans or episcopalians. It's all a sad commentary on our current society IMO.

If you want to understand a culture... read their fantasy
Right now, they see churches as where everybody will go when shit hits the fan, and so are getting ready for it. They envision Castle style society, combined with fantasies of maintaining their consumer lifestyle. As such, it's scary how much the ideal resembles that of a collaborationist politician. Essentially, don't do anything, keep your head down, and when the big guy shows up, claim you were on their side the whole time.
It's an extremely cowardly fantasy, IMHO, but other people have made better arguments debunking it than me. We have a group of them down a few blocks. Big Cult Compound, complete with onsite living, security and all the modern amenities they can afford within their nice little gates.

Yes . . . it is horrible fantasy . . .
Read his book from the 70s, but just started the left behind first book. A friend wanted me to read it. Terrible! It starts with a pilot whose wife is a bitchy religious self-righteous chick who goes to church all the time. He isn't perfect but she is not a bit christ-like. She is the one taken of course because she goes to church a lot. I did enjoy Seth Macfarland's American Dad rapture episodes. Very funny.
Cowardly, castle style consumerism. That about says it.

Good morning, Marilyn. Wierd, but not, about the church.
If I recall the news correctly, it is mostly black churches being attacked plus some thwarted wannabe attacks on suspected muslims. Nonetheless, I suspect that said fortress cheesy (from the Italian Chiesa) is full of fundagelical whites lacking any realistic grounds to fear attack. Ah well ...
Have a good one.

Some Monday Morning Metal
Of course I have a reason I like my Music LOUD. Crank it, enjoy it, and apologies, but I'm on a Sabaton kick recently. (I like Metal... with my metalwork.)

Good morning, deroit. I'll hold off on the tunes for a bit, my
newest rule - no metal before coffee. Thanks.
Have a good one.

A truth of the nuclear age/climate change: we can no longer have endless war and survive on this planet. Oh sh*t.
Thanks, Lookout. I was just reading about that and figured
it would be a really good time to form a Public Utility District to buy them out and run it as a public service. Of course, that's just wishful thinking, but it would definitely be a serious improvement.

Wondering what your take is on Newsom proposals
A truth of the nuclear age/climate change: we can no longer have endless war and survive on this planet. Oh sh*t.
Truth be told, I haven't paid any attention whatsoever to his
or any other plans and proposals just now. The graphic and related verbiage makes it sound like his vision for California health & medical care is to piggy-back on the PPACA with boosted subsidies. I'm not crazy about that, it sounds like a recipe for endless alternating price and subsidy increases. The whole point and purpose of the PPACA was to mandate the use of insurance companies and to shield pharma and insurance from any cost-control measures, not to provide health and medical care. I'd much rather see some sort of "single payer"/medicare for all type of system. Someday I'll have to do an OT on my "coverage" and how it could be something of a model for the introduction of bona fide health care in this country, but I'm not doing anything more before mid-February (I'm good through then).

Good day, el; wanted to share this photo:
Comes from an article What the Best Mentors Do, https://getpocket.com/explore/item/what-the-best-mentors-do
No photo credit given in article.
Quiet day inside, outside is wet and cold. A little reading, a little business and thinking about dinner; what should i have? Craving fried chicken, but not the work entailed in fixing it. Oh well, give it an hour or so and the desire may change; fish, maybe.
Happy trails to you.
Thanks, Smiley, great pic. Skimmed the linked article, and
have some quibbles. Saying that mentor's should help "shape other people’s character, values, self-awareness, empathy, and capacity for respect. " is all well and good presuming that the mentor's character and values are beyond reproach - a very big presumption. Every religious proselytizer and status quo supporter think that theirs are, but ... I'm also leery of overmuch emphasis on optimism, especially the idea of mandating a period during which one only thinks of all the remotely possible potential good things about an idea before entertaining any critical analysis.
Have a good one.

Good afternoon, magi. Thanks for dropping in. I'm well
aware of the weather forecast and only hope that the rain isn't too bad when I run up to Berkeley for some dental work on the 16th and when we drive to SF the 17th. After that, we're on our way south. Just checked the rain for Thursday on on Windy, and I think we're looking good one we're out of here.
