OT ~ Welcome to Saturday!

Sit-a-while

where tin-dippers and
sweet water
in cool touches
meet lips
from hand dug wells.
"I want you to know that a third of the people on this planet eat with their spoons and forks like you, a third of the people eat with chopsticks, and a third of the people eat with fingers like me. And we’re all just as civilized.” professor in Afghanistan.
Good morning good people,
Unexpected joys wait and often surprise and while house sitting Friday night with no wifi available, i turned on the large screen, thankfully. Rick Steves was on stage speaking of fascism, Trump, the EU, legalizing marijuana, water, corporations and more in Travel as a Political Act.
Mesmerized by the script's simplicity and his common-sense delivery at programs end, i said out loud to the dogs, "this should go viral, all Americans should watch this, especially our school and college students." Posting it today in hopes you have an hour to enjoy as well.
“I believe if you’re going to bomb someone you should know them first. It should hurt when you kill someone.” ~ Rick Steves
Another stumbled upon surprise this week was learning: "The Library of Congress has unveiled its new National Screening Room, a free collection of digitized historical films, commercials, newsreels and other clips. According to the library, most of the movies are in the public domain and are available for downloading; others are only available to stream." https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/23/movies/library-of-congress-national-s...
Just a perusal of the site thus far, but may be spending more idle time enjoying these archives. https://www.loc.gov/search/?q=National%20Screening%20Room
My bird is the cardinal,
one will sometimes come to me
or vanishing bluebird,
even the furtherest
& their god protects me
so I will get my Contact
hours with god,
come back to me
jonquils, violets, pansies
I am gagging to relive
those animal moments
we first thought
the opposite of.

May your day include a pleasant, unexpected surprise.
The porch is yours ...

Good morning smiley
I'm enjoying your musical selections over my coffee. It's still dark here so I think I have time to watch the Rick Steves piece before it gets light. I'm anticipating a beautiful day to work in the yard and plan to spend the day outside. Watching for a pleasant, unexpected surprise.
And a Top-of-the-mornin to you, randtntx,
Our first snow up high last night; just went for a short, brisk walk.
Some more music:
Thanks for reading and listening and have a great outdoor day.
A bit more
blues:
Good morning, smiley. Still dark here, but not meant as
metaphor. Farmers' market awaits, as usual, but later. I'm a ton behind on my listening this week, but I'll get to it. Anyway, I'll try to get around to Rick S, but we already engage in foreign travel though not specifically to get to know the people, although doing so is definitely part of the process.
The sentence you quote is good, as far as it goes:
but we both tend to take it way beyond that. There is no justification for killing others unless they are actively trying to kill you. For what it's worth (nothing these days) the US is a signatory to an international accord that pretty much takes that exact position, but we don't adhere to treaties or conventions anyway.
Thanks for the link to the Library of Congress screening room (and collection). That could probably turn into a near infinite time suck, especially if combined with the "national archive" on Flickr (photos, etc,) https://www.flickr.com/photos/usnationalarchives and the Internet Archive, which is an archive of archives, incliding LibriVox books and tons of music -- https://archive.org/index.php
Thanks for the information, poetry, inspiration, music and OT. Time for breakfast here,
Have a great one.
That, in its essence, is fascism--ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power. -- Franklin D. Roosevelt --
Good morning, el. Steves piece is political, very clear about
America's misgivings and offers good advice. I sort of did a "what's that" after turning the tube on and heard a few of his sentences then tuned in to listen. Been a while since i watched a Rick Steves travelogue, years really, and i was pleasantly surprised to see this tour-de-force, unlike his usual travel scenes, this is a statement to an audience in a small theatre in which his shares a breadth of understanding and articulation of what's going on; looking upon him in new respect, after this.
Of note, in searching for today's video of his, i see that he has a three part series on fascism which i didn't know existed: https://www.ricksteves.com/watch-read-listen/video/tv-show/fascism
I need to get out and about more or watch more TV; good programming, that is.
Thanks for the links, so far the load time is a little disappointing on the new archive; but a good reference is worth its weight.
Had leftover quiche i cooked with the dogs yesterday for today's breakfast and went for a walk and voted this early morning; lot at stake in NC including six damn onerous constitutional amendments.
Enjoy the market and your day and thanks for reading.

good morning
the colors continue to deepen here. We had a beautiful sunny morning, but just over the hills it was socked in with fog at trade day this morning.
Some old friends are coming over to visit today. I'll enjoy catching up and we'll take a walk as well.
Thanks for the OT, music, and links! Have a good one everybody.
“Until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”
Forgot to say "save time,"
tomorrow. Cold in these hills this morning. Color peaking around three thousand feet; drove down there yesterday, a very gold this season; leaves almost gone here.
Enjoy your friends.
Thanks for reading and your substantial work producing the Weekly Watch.
DAmn, I hate when somebody plays Sonny Landreth,
because then I have to go listen to Congo Square.

Love it, not to worry, must be
johnny cooking in the woods again.
Add music before coffee and it gets all stirred up.
Making room
for 2 fig trees. I hope to put them in the ground in between rain showers this week.
Wow to that Tracy Grammer piece....very nice. The Mumford and Sons rendition is fun....thanks for that.
Glad to hear you have snow up high, I miss the higher elevations and the snow in my flatlander life. It was always an awesome state to me, the quiet of a snowy mountain forest wilderness. To me it doesn't get more amazing than that.
"the quiet of a snowy mountain forest wilderness."
Yep, use to go fishing day after a big snow, the quiet stays.
Fig trees, cool. May they grow to Ent size feeding and shading you.
Well thanks
I'm not sure about them being Ent size but we all sure could use some Ents couldn't we. If they become Ents I will be sure to send one up to you (that is only it they would agree of course). A gathering of Ents is just what we need right about now. I would feel so much better if that were to happen.

Time to praise, "the colonizer of dreams."
thank you
The first time
I ever heard of Blossom Dearie she was singing a lovely version of "Someone to Watch Over Me" on a
Jazz Compilation CD I got at Starbucks of all places.
It was actually a great CD with some wonderful songs and wonderful artists I had never heard of before including Diana Krall singing "Peel Me A Grape", which is not only the polar opposite of the sentiment and style of "Someone to Watch Over Me" but a difficult song to pull off without the right voice and a little chutzpah.
Krall was all over this one! Lots of fun

Ruh-roh ... Blossom all day, everyday. A Village creature, too
"Peel me a Grape," sweet. Many thanks for the music and for being here.
Day plays on ~ Someone To Watch Over Me
another great

It looks like De Leon is closing the gap with Feinstein
For the California US Senate seat. He's gone from something like 40 points behind Feinstein to 7 in recent polls. He's pretty solid on all current points: Medicare for all, etc. I imagine most right wingers in California will be voting for Feinstein since they have no choice.
Beware the bullshit factories.
Good on De Leon, cheers for the news, Timmethy ...
we can hope, can't we that talking heads are beside themselves on Nov.7 trying to explain?
And gdamnit, this old world needs some tender loving folks caring about its future.
Have a good one.
Going to vote in a hour or so.
Voting for the mayor and the astronaut in the governor's and senate race, respectively.
The only amendment that I'll be voting "Yes" on is the restoring felons voting rights. Doing some last minute studying on the other ones, but Florida loves their word salad wording when it comes to amendments.
And the weather is absolutely splendid! Might have to just go to the park afterwards and go for a walk...
Great to see you, cybrestrike.
Folks moving to Florida for the winter as it's cold here; finally. I suppose most of those people have homesteads in Florida for tax purposes and thus are eligible to vote there.
Gillum is formidable, "may the force be with him."
Read that Florida surpassed the old mid-term voting record on Thursday.
Sorry to read about the yoga studio shooting; condolences to you all.
Again, good to see you, hope you are well and enjoy that beautiful day.
morning smiley...
Thanks for the OT. One more day at the town clock to say kaddish for the Jews killed in Pittsburg and others killed by hate. A healing experience for all of us.
Here's some more music and art. Have a great one...

Enjoyed the OT - watching the travel video . . . Dixie died just
a bit ago. I wrote yesterday that one of our rescue dogs was dying. Just before she passed another rescue dog, Kojak, and I rubbed her and loved on her real good for quite a while.
But the way it goes in the rescue pet business, one sadly goes, but others arrive. Inherited 4 rescue kittens last week.

Marilyn,
Dixie has joined the river where labs love to go.
We know her through your words.
Thank you Dixie for rescuing us all.
Yes!
Thank you.

Wonderful
that you were able to be there for Dixie as she passed away. I imagine that petting her at the end was the very best thing you could do. I know my dog thinks I exist only to rub his belly. Oh-- and to feed him.
