Monday Open Thread: October 1 is International Day of Older Persons (older than what?)
October 1 is the 274th day of the year; as well as Boomtime, Bureaucracy 48, 3184 YOLD
to discordians.
One is Unity. It may be significant here that only one out of an infinitude of numbers represents unity. Math mirroring ife, it seems.
Twenty years of schooling and they put you on the day shift, look out kid,
...
On this day in:
1861 – Mrs Beeton's Book of Household Management was published. It went on to sell 60,000 copies in its first year and is still in print today. I haven't read it myself, and dislike the word "management" except when used as in "I'll manage somehow", but that's just me
1887 – The British conquered Balochistan because it's just what imperialists do. It isn't like Balochistan cut off their access to the sea or something.
1931 – Spain adopted women's suffrage.
1936 – Francisco Franco became head of the Nationalist government of Spain. This eliminated women's suffrage, male suffrage and any other suffrage, imposing suffering instead, but the US loved his Fascist ass.
1946 – Assorted Nazi leaders were sentenced in the Nuremberg trials. These trials established certain precepts such as: 1) The most heinous war crime of all is starting a war. This does not apply to or within the US or to any of its presidents, generals, War Defense Department wallahs, or the like. 2) "I was only following orders" is a totally fallacious and non-viable defense for otherwise unacceptable behavior. As above, this does not apply within the US, especially to the President's own war criminals, the CIA (see, eg. Panetta's memo.)
1957 – The phrase "In God we trust" was first printed on U.S. paper currency. The US became officially and openly (as opposed to covertly and sekretly) deist and theocratic, though still sporadically paying lip service to the First Amendment and other relics of reason.
1961 – The United States Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) was formed. This putatively established the country's first centralized military espionage organization, but we still somehow needed the fascist "Patriot Act" and the HeimlandSekuritatsPolizei Homeland Security Department.
1964 – The Free Speech Movement was launched on the campus of University of California, Berkeley. (Go Bears!) It was necessary for students to take up this particular cudgel because the adult population of the US either forgot or ignored the First Amendment, excepting those who openly opposed and sought to suppress it. This seems to still be pretty much the case even though we won, twice.
Thanks, Mario, from all of us.
1975 – Al Jackson, Jr. was murdered.
1979 – The United States Officially "returned" sovereignty over the Panama Canal to Panama. Of course, we created Panama and can destroy it too, as we reminded them when our first CIA President, Bush the Elder, decided to depose long-time CIA asset and tool Noreiga. We weren't even willing to accept a peaceful handover, but rejected such offer in order to invade and kill a lot of Panamanians in order to remind all of Central and South America who was boss in this hemisphere

On the road to Barstow, dunno when, or if, I'll drop in
Comments
Morning salute to older people, el.
1964 photo of UNC students protesting against the Board of Governor's Speaker Ban rule of 1963 which was finally lifted in 68.
Berkeley of the East we used to say of the hill as students. Hail to Mario!
Barstow ... that's a stretch of road where i looked for underpasses under which to cool the old engines i invariably drove cross country.
Travel well and safe, el, cheers.
talkin' about old?
Great...a day for...
old farts. About time someone recognized our importance. I guess we better eat our vegetables too.
More mowing today...better get started. Hope you all have a good day!

Good mornng, HAW, I had the good fortune to be at Cal back then,
already a staunch supporter of civil liberties and student member of ACLU. FSM turned me more or less into a first amendment fanatic and beyond.
There are reports predicting rain abd fkash floods along all routes out of Sedona, but a bit later in the day, so we are hightailing it early, sneaking east to avoid the chaos of the town's center and then running back up north to 40 and off to scenic downtown Barstow.
My apologies to Azazello for the weather I leave behind.

Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit.
Supposedly, "Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit" should be the first words said aloud on the first of the month. However, the first words said on the first of every month by people don't own their homes may well be, "The rent is too damned high."
"The rent is too damned high" is the name of a political party in NY; and I think it may be the best political party name I've encountered yet.

Good Morning, el.
Another HAW posts here?
To answer your question:
Older people are older than younger people.
Older people are also older than they once were.
Perhaps some older people are older than they prefer to be?
(-:
Have a great day, week and month, everyone.
Should've been Smiley7, but I'd swear it said HAW. Too busy too
early with too little caffeine, I suspect.

No worries. You almost had me convinced!
I need two cups to wake up, but, most often, I have only one.
Explains a lot.
Just got home to Tucson this morning,
from a long trip to the Pacific Northwest. Do not apologize for the rain. We always love it, always need more.
We wanted decent healthcare, a living wage and free college.
The Democrats gave us Biden and war instead.
Glad that you're home safe. We an almost smell the coast,
one day away, followed by a day of relaxation and pleasure along same, and finally home.
Have a great week.

We bring the weather with us.
It was sunny and clear the whole time we were in Washington and Oregon. We told the locals that we brought the sun with us from AZ, they were appreciative. Now, it's raining in Arizona. I guess we brought the Northwest back with us to the desert.

UC Regents get last laugh, of course
Sorry Mario, Orwell for the win! I mean from Homeland Security to Board of Regents and "Let's go, we don't have to listen to this crap"? et tu berkeley?
freedom
Yeah, a sad day for us all. I can't beleive that today's kids
let it happen, but such is life.

Don't blame the kids
Ah yes, but also no. I've been busy ever since, too, and
recall lot's of Bay Area demonstrations against the various wars of Bush1 and Bush2 that seemed to be mostly elders and some middle aged with their kids, etc.
Whatever, have a great one.

Not meant as a poke in the eye
A day for all of us...
As this song explains it so well...( I like the singing on this version.)
I want a Pony!
Good morning, Arrow. Thanks for reading and, of course,
for the inimitable Platters.
Have a great one.

Wasn't Bonnie a financial transaction specialist?
Some great artists - thanks for pointing them out...
Albert Collins had amazing sound, tone, vibrato, strap over the "wrong" shoulder, held his axe like a banjo, usually a capo high on neck. World class great player.
The beautiful Mariska Veres most in U.S. just knew from Shocking Blue and the hit Venus. Which was the pop single song on the album, the rest was very creative and original, a great Dutch band. I think she was a jazz trained singer, she really had a voice. Their second album was very good too.
Cub Koda was great as well, very talented, great frontman, lots of other Brownsville Station stuff was good for what it was. I saw them open for Elvin Bishop and ZZ Top once in Long Beach, CA, maybe 75 or so, they were surprisingly good.
Barstow!?!?!?!? Though, anywhere out there, from Baker to Zyzxx, the desert oases of eastern California are amongst the most exciting fall birding there is, anything could be seen. I was partial the Owens Valley to Death Valley area a little north.
We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

So far, mostly driving, a few breaks revealed mostly Ravens,

Hola, EL! Hope you're having
a pleasant vacation/break. Glad that you're keeping your 'numbers data' OT. I enjoy it very much. Of course, I also loved playing Trivial Pursuit, in its heyday!
Here's a tidbit for you Guys--
It's a done deal--signed a week ago this past Friday, IIRC.
BTW, according to Wikipedia, his wife, Cindy, has had a net worth of up to $400,000. Whew!
