The Dreaded Site Meta #1

You knew it had to happen - and now here it is.

Since we threw out the welcome mat a while ago, it appears that about a gazillion people have decided to show up here.

Let me say in behalf of the site, welcome, we're glad to see you.

Hi, I'm Joe, one of the two site admins, the other being JtC. JtC is the guy who makes the gears spin and the pixels happen here. Without JtC (short for Johnny the Conqueroo) this site would literally be just a pipe dream that a bunch of us were having. I try to help JtC out where I can and do stuff like creating the Evening Blues series (a weeknight compendium of news and blues music), writing stuff like this and participating in site moderation.

Usually when I write here, it reflects my opinions alone, for this piece, I have pulled out the soapbox and cranked up the reverb on the megaphone. This piece was vetted by and generally reflects the consensus of the admins.

To give you some history of C99, this site has been through a number of iterations over a period of time, including an email list, a google group, a bulletin board style group and a previous abortive attempt at building a website. Through that process there was a lot of discussion about what sort of website was wanted and the site you see before you is the result of that.

Now that there are so many more people using the site, there have been some changes. JtC has migrated the site twice so far to progressively more capacious servers with more bandwidth. In order to accommodate so many people there will inevitably have to be some changes in the site functionality. JtC is working on creating some groups as one way to rationalize the display of the additional traffic so that people can find what they are looking for.

Please be patient as we work to update the site, this is a labor of love and most of us have day jobs to pay the bills. It may take time to get some things done as folks try to put food on their families.

We look at this effort as a community project, though and we'd like to draw your attention to some perhaps less obvious ways that folks can contribute to the site.

Here are some ways that you can help make the site better:

Among our aspirations for this site are to make this a place with very few rules, not because we thrive on chaos, but because we'd like to foster the sort of community that values and respects the site and each other, such that respectful discussions happen between people with diverse views in an organic manner.

Our one current rule is, don't be a dick. We have articulated a bit about that in the FAQ, but we surely have not even scratched the surface of the topic. We're pretty sure that most folks understand what we mean.

Our intent for the site was to be issue-oriented and build a community towards activism around shared goals. We are hoping that the site allows the folks here to educate each other and to amplify our voices in the world.

So, here are a couple of other things that will help make the site better and more coherent.

Use the open threads. Every morning, an open thread is posted. On weeknights the Evening Blues diary is available to use as an open thread, too.

If you start a post and you realize that it's really pretty thin on material, maybe it's just a few lines long, or you just wanted to say hello, or you have a video you'd like to post - please use the open threads.

Don't throw spitballs. A lot of folks have come here from another site where there was much unpleasantness. Take your time and heal. Our sympathies are with you.

Our shared vision for this site is for it to be a community on its own terms, a place where new and interesting things are possible and people are interested in getting on with the business of making a better world.

While it is understandable that many people who are hurting would want to use the platform that this site affords them to hurl commentary and invective at the place they came from or the people still there, that sort of thing really doesn't move this site forward.

Note that we are explicitly not saying that articulate and insightful criticism of another web site's content, positions, owners or staff is verboten. It's just that we'd like the focus of this site to be on what we can do going forward and we'd like it if you honored that purpose with your contributions to the site's content.

As they say, the best revenge is living well.

Take care in making claims. If you are making claims that it seems might be contentious, please provide good evidence for them. For example, if you want to say that Donald Trump is a narcissist, go right to it. On the other hand, if you want to speculate about whether Donald Trump would be properly diagnosed with Narcissistic Personality Disorder, a political blog is not a proper forum for those concerns.

Our site's reputation is dependent upon our putting out interesting, thoughtful and well-documented articles. Taking care in the construction of your posts will benefit everybody.

Check out the documentation. In case there are folks that are kind of wondering how the site works and want to get oriented, here are a couple of things that will help out. First, there is the FAQ which we intend to expand soon. There is also some information in the welcome mat article.

So, we look forward to building something great together. If you have questions, dropping a comment in one of the daily open threads or in the Evening Blues diary are a good way to get help and information.

So often one does not hear about those who are lower down on a ticket...even in small races around the country...who may be BETTER THAN anyone at the top running. It will be great to hear and discuss options to the status quo.

Supporting Bernie and irreverent left go hand in hand. No one is supporting Sanders because he is a Democrat. They are supporting him because is of his leftist Democratic Socialist policies and honest character. Some are calling for him to run as an Indie after the convention or to throw his support to Jill Stein. We have seen the enemy, and the enemy is the Democratic Party. Once we beat it, we can take on the Tepublucans. We need a movement and a political party to carry it.

The ballot , second choice after Bernie.
Sanders is giving Dem Leadership the chance to transform, but we see that most establishment Dems. want to stick with the turd way.

In Germany the Greens have had a setback apparently, but fits and spurts are not surprising.

Good to see someone like you looking ahead to alternatives as the old ways crumble.

i am supportive of bernie despite the fact that he's running as a democrat, because he is speaking up for enough of my values that i am willing to put the time and effort into pushing him to deal with the values that he has not yet fully incorporated into his platform.

One of my points about not being able to do it was that Bernie wouldn't approve of attacks.
I'm sorry that those statements put you off. I will never ever intentionally want to quiet any dissent against any candidate, or anything else for that matter. It keeps my objectivity intact.
I apologize.

we do not want this site to devolve into a launching pad for political attacks or weaponized opposition research. i was quite taken aback by some of the things proposed in that post and was gratified that the commenters for the most part reminded the poster to keep on the positive side.

Bernie can say what he wants, and most of the time, most of his supporters will listen courteously and consider whether or not to go along with what Bernie wants. And most of the time, what Bernie wants is pretty good, so it's likely that most of us will go along with it--BUT

that's a far cry from "My leader doesn't like me to say X, so I'm shutting up."

Cenk Uygur talked about this. This ain't that kind of movement. We aren't that kind of people.

Sometimes, if Bernie wants something, we courteously say, "I appreciate what you're doing, Mr. Sanders, but no. I can't/won't go along with that."

FWIW, I think Bernie probably knows this. He rarely asks us to do anything, let alone tells.
There's a lot of "This campaign listens to.....these people." "This campaign listens to....those people." There's a lot of "If elected President, I will do this. Or that."

what I think makes this site special is the combination of a lot of excellent factual content through posting a lot of great articles and triggering discussions about them. And everybody is free to express himself as he likes, freely, without getting unpleasant, but clearly outspoken and independently. And when we get a bit overwhelmed and overboard, we all realize it quickly and put it in the context of being humans with feelings.

Let us be different, not Reddit style, not FB style and not twiggering. These places have their own role to play. This here is something special. It's a great mix of things to love.

well, if you have the credentials and you have examined the patient and your revealing their medical information in a public setting is not an issue, then, sure, drag out the dsm and go to it.

there are perfectly acceptable ways to express that donald trump is a self-absorbed, ego-driven person or that hillary clinton has a disturbing lack of empathy and calls for bloodthirsty acts that she labels "humanitarian," without attempting to use medical terminology speculatively. that sort of speculation turns off a lot of people.

I too am tired of political party themed sites when the REAL battle is between the 99% and the Billionaire Class.

Pardon me for a few posts regarding that other swamp site. I have been there for many years and it is totally traumatizing to have the true persona of it's proprietor revealed, and to see the havoc that the pro corporate denizens are doing there. I should have known better when he who shall not be named said taking to the streets to fight for issues was a waste of time...The French People in 1789, The Russian Serfs in 1917, and The US (and global) Union Workers in the 1920/30's lay that statement to rest.

I digress...my apologies for being one of the walking wounded...I promise to contribute in a POSITIVE way, but will probably need to therapeutically vent a few more times - I'll keep it low key though.

And finally I was an early on lifetime subscriber at DK...I'll be contributing here too as soon as I can. As a suggestion I like the way Skinner at DU handles subscibers - no set $ amount or monthly donation required , give as much as you can afford when you can afford it, and get a little gold star next to your name in posts to mark you as a contributor. Except I'd replace the gold star with the Solidarity Logo...

I'm mindful of the various communities I've been involved with who tried to use the word "true" in front of some label. I'd rather stick to individual policy statements. Are you for or against wars of aggression? Are you for or against domestic surveillance? etc. That way we can keep it objective and not hide reality under some poorly defined label.

What if you found out that I was left of you on many issues, very much wanted to redistribute both wealth and power in this country, wanted to dramatically reduce the cost, scope, and usage of our "defense" department, but also was fairly pro-gun including wanting to minimize things like background checks. Does that make me a "true progressive"?

profiting from the community. i wrote a comment about how bullshit all the "it's his site, his rules" fly in the face of lifetime subscribers (who can get banned, so then there is no "lifetime" participation in reality) and the only way that site is viable is with community participate and content. but enough of that.

here's the problem with your last paragraph: those staunch DINOs and Clinton supporters will never see or admit it when it's gone wrong. if they aren't willing to examine her claims of bringing peace in Northern Ireland, or purposefully lying about Nancy Reagan's record, the disaster she championed in Libya and Honduras, and her ties to Wall Street . . . these are all public record. The data clearly leads to a NEO CON in Dem clothing.

The same for Obama. If they don't have any concerns about whistleblowers, journalists, and drones, not to mention his support of TPP... then what makes you think any of these deluded Americans will get it when war doesn't stop and there are more and more Flints and social security gets sand bagged.

You know WHY the Dems don't challenge in red states? They want it that way. It's a bait and switch game and Obama gets to talk like a wounded lefty warrior because the big bad terrible Rethugs stopped him.

thanks for joining us! take your time and heal.

i'd like to find a way to honor everyone for their contributions, whether they are donations to the site or creating great content or making comments that enrich discussions of issues. there are lots of ways that people contribute and i'm pretty sure that i speak for everybody here at the site, we are deeply grateful for all of them.

after my experience of years at the same other place that you came here from, i am a little hesitant to duplicate some of the things that i saw as creating something of a manipulative atmosphere there. the mojo bars, the trusted user status, the coordinated efforts to get people to help get diaries on the rec list, the calls to police the site that some people (and groups) abused... you remember that. the software over there had embedded in it tools that, i think, manipulated people.

while those tools can make the site feel homey and give people a sense of ownership and accomplishment, there is a down-side to them as we've seen. so, i want to be really careful about this site incorporating ideas that provide status symbols to people in lieu of genuine expressions of gratitude.

I haven't been to DKos since Tuesday morning (other than redirected links) and I have no intention of going back. I want to focus on policies that redirect $$ from investment to consumption because those are my policy goals. I reject those who work to impede that progress, I reject those who don false hoods, I reject those who wish to browbeat me into submitting to "the party" for the purpose of "winning" elections.

I reject those who tell me that economic growth is incompatible with human growth, that economic growth is incompatible with green energy (how about those subsidies...), that economic growth is anything other than a human construct.

I'm glad you guys have done this. One reason I'm here is because about 2/3 of my posts elsewhere were alerts or calls to action, which I intend to keep posting here. The other third were specifically regional because I'm in Alaska and we often have weird or unusual things happen here, whether environmental or political.

So it was quite annoying to have my first post get hit by a thread hijacker who accused me of a "quick hit" because I posted a short piece about a DNC fundraising mailer with a call to action.

I wasn't aware there was a requirement that one had to be excessively verbose here, or only write long screeds.

If there is, you should make us read the requirements when we log in the first time, and before allowing us to post. Otherwise, you should tell the self-appointed content cops to just stop it.

If you don't, these anal authoritarians will make us just as miserable as the ShillaryBots at DKos, and we'll just fade away and try to find some other home.

But hey, thanks again for putting in the effort to do all this. As someone who has been struggling with my own business web site, I know it's not easy even if you have a good toolbox.

Jeez, even that doesn't sound right, lol.

I like Don't Be Rude. To me the opposite of rude is polite. Polite is not that difficult and goes a long way to making conversations civil even if they engender disagreements.

Meanwhile, on the technowizardry front...

Can you detach the header and the sidebar from the scrolly bits, pleeeezzzee? I'm getting seasick from all the up-and-downing to follow conversations.

Make the sidebar scrollable independently?

There's a "My Comments" link in my profile. Can you add an indicator to the comments that have been replied to? A star or some such?

It would save a lot of page flipping when we're trying to keep up with several conversations simultaneously.

those are great suggestions and the comment reply indicator is on the top of the list as far as improvements go, but it is a really difficult thing to do with the code.

we've been talking about a lot of suggestions and jtc's mailbox is full of them. it's going to take a little while to get some of these site improvements done, so please be patient. we will try to address things as quickly as we can.

A lot of wanderers in the U.S. political desert recognize that all the duopoly has to offer is a choice of mirages. Come, let us trudge towards empty expanse of sand #1, littered with the bleached bones of Deaniacs and Hope and Changers.

Meta is a great deal of fun, and a must have for any site.

But really, shouldn't there be a META response disagreeing with this one.

Just registered and am quite happy to be here. The vitriol and (yes, I'll say it ) narcissism on KOS has become unbearable It actually feels like the Bush Administration - remember? - You're either with us or against us.
That is how Markos has been ever since he decided to "crash the gates" of power and decided he liked it better with the "ins" and the rest of us can go to hell.

Anyhoo, just glad to finally find a site with calm, reasonable, POLITE discussion of opposing view points.

Hello to everyone!

P.S. MSNBC SUCKS big time.
