but I'll add to yours.

The light today is rather weird. I wonder if it's the smoke from the fires in California?

Anyway, some shots from recent travels:

Looking forward to some pizza now the roofers have disappeared.

Did the butterfly make it out?

All the pictures are wonderful. I love the first one of the grass. And the second one. And the last one. What is it? But I like the first one best. How was the trip?

Love the way you used DoF in the first one and always love black and white photos.

The air in Utah has been dreadful from both our fires and the ones in California.

NASA has an animation of the flow of the smoke from California.

@Bollox Ref It was the smoke in the air. It was so bad here where I am today, the weather kept saying 'clear' but it looked overcast all day. I keep meaning to get a photo of the sun as it's setting but can't seem to time it right. And here I thought we were escaping the crappy air in Utah. NOPE. Sigh.

When you drove to Beus pond do you remember seeing the mountain to the north and how close it was? Earlier this week if I didn't know that it was there I wouldn't have seen it. Antelope and Fremont islands were invisible. One night after I got back from my walk I smelled like a campfire. There's a new fire at Bear lake today and I've lost track of how many fires we've had here this summer.

Where are your fires?

@snoopydawg 100 wildfires up there, I saw somewhere. Smoke from the fires out west is reaching us over here too though. And not much wind. Looks like I'll have another shot at getting the red sun tonight.

@Bollox Ref Guess I was a bit quick on the draw. Yeah, Ms. Swallow Tail eventually figured it out when the sky became dark. The purple disk is amazing.

The one with color was boring, but I didn't expect it to look that much better in b&w. For some reason there are a lot of trees at the cemetery that have died. Even the ones that look healthy are losing limbs from rot.

they're both quite pretty. It has me wondering--how many Springers did you say you've had?

Wink

Guess I've mentioned that 'the B' was our second Springer. Our first was our little Alaskan Sourdough who looked much more like her Dad (a working 'field' Springer) than her 'bench' Springer Mom. She was the 'runt' of her litter, but, that was okay, since she went on to live to age 17-1/2.

Have a good one!

Including the light-struck webs and cactus edges. It's interesting to see how soft even cactuses can look in the right light. Thanks magiamma. Thank you also for your Hot Air essays. I find it easier to read the subject matter when it is presented by you.

Thanks everyone for all the posts all week! Especially JS and the EB, and gj. I really appreciate the work, thoughts, ideas, and spirit of everyone sharing here. Thanks all!

Blacktail Shiner (Cyprinella venusta) a common widespread minnow in eastern No. Am., this male in breeding but doesn't show the pinkish purple that flashes along side when spawning. I just netted him for a pic, he has 2 females in the tank with him.

Acilid (Robberfly) with Bumblebee prey. That was a big Texas sized yeller bumble, the Robberfly (probably genus Promachus) flew out when bee left a flower and grabbed it,
the bumblebee stopped buzzing in less than one second.

This is the molted exoskeleton of a spider. They molt as they grow. This beast was over 3" across! My buddy the spider expert (Pres. of Am. Arachnid. Soc. - I have friends in high places) says likely Dolomedes sps. , the fishing spiders. They can dive underwater and grab fish!

Orange-striped Threadtail (Protoneura cara) is endemic to a few counties in central Texas in the U.S., though widespread south in tropics. The female is ovipositing in submerged aquatic vegetation, the male has a hold of the back of her head with his claspers. Each dragon and damsel has unique claspers for this, only one type works.

Lots of you are lucky to see the birds you do. I mostly see crows, blue jays and sparrows, but today I saw a woodpecker. Brown with a red head. Of course I didn't have my camera with me.

Thanks for the bird and insect photos and their names and explanations. The fishing spider exoskeleton is quite interesting. We have Redtails here and they come and try to eat the birds at my feeders. My friend told me that they are unusual in that they fly right into the branches to fetch their prey. I saw one do this once.

Once the babies get a little bigger, they will turn upside down, with their little butts barely over the top of the nest, and poop over the edge, onto the ground below. I found that fascinating, but I'm on the weird side. Gives new meaning to, "Don't shit where you eat." Wink

@janis b But that's OK. Yeah, trying to capture the world I see thru the lens of a camera borders on quirky madness. It's like the monkey in a tuxedo running up a tree backwards. Nobody would believe me. Even if I had a blurry photo (all my shots are blurry), the doubters would say photoshop or unreal. Glad they don't have to spend much time out of their padded universe. It is SHOCKING how much surprising images are available to an open mind. And darn difficult to relate those quirky awakenings to the sleepers. Do they still lace pillows with soma? Sweet dreams.
