16 = 4 squared and 2 to the fourth or 4**2 and 2**4. Coincidence? I don't think so.
(I know of no other number that is both a**b and b**a where a is unequal to b)
16 is the base for the Hexadecimal numeral system, aka Hex
Counting in Hex runs from 0 to 9 then A,B,C,D,E, and F for 10 through 15
Hex is used a ton in computer science, computers and computing
16 is sulfur
There are 16 ounces in a pound

Elsewhere in 16 BCE,
Roman legate Marcus Lollius was defeated by a Germanic horde. This was/is called "The Lollian Disaster" because the German raiders bagged the legionary standard (the Eagle).
-
16 CE was the Year of the Consulship of Taurus and Libo
A Roman army of 50,000 men commanded by Germanicus won a victory at Idistaviso, defeating the German war chief Arminius and recovering the lost eagles of Varus' legions. (Those were the 3 eagles Varus lost in 9 BCE, not the paltry lone eagle Lollius lost in 16 BCE.)

Happy Monday, everybody!
(She's too young, boys!)
It's funny watching these old croners on teevee specials
Now in their 60s/70s, singing their old hits. "She's 16, she's beautiful, and she's miiiiine. "

Good morning, OLinda. Good to see you. I think I once did an
My recollection of the late fifties is that 16 was a sort of "coming of age", but not the age of consent, except in the south where it was a sort of "age of consent if the parents consented." "Sweet 16" parties were definitely a coming of age thing, but for falling in love, dating and going steady. OTOH, most of the US was, to me, terra incognita culturally back then.

Those were my exact thoughts when I was putting this
together, though my tastes run more to zinfandel and cabernet.

Question: why won't twitter images load here on c99?
For example, here's a twitter image
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CqvOe7yUkAAV7HI.jpg
If you go to that link, the image exists.
But if I put the link in an html IMG tag in a C99 comment, it will not load.
Is that twimg domain blocked for some reason?
Opps. I forgot to say Good Morning All!
Update: It turns out that I am using Firefox and have Tracking Protection enabled.
That is what is blocking twitter images (b/c they are cross-site image references)
The solution was to disable Tracking Protection for this site.
So never mind.

Hmm. It appears that it is Twitter
that is blocking the image loads.
I uploaded an html page to my own website and the Twitter image would not load. Dam U Twitter. Screw U, your users are a bunch of Socialists anyway.

They're also blocking my links.
I do not pretend I know what I do not know.
Good morning, detroit. That reinforces my suspicion that
they're part of the clown show that has decided to downrate and distract from everybody who doesn't echo the mainstream narrative on things.

Trump/Putin Day Whoopie!
Turned on CNN during breakfast. Trump and Putin sitting in front of reporters for photo op. Trump droneing on about what a tremendous opportunity this is. Putin looking down at his shoes, looking bored out of his f___in mind. Putin was an hour late for the meeting. Hahaha.

good morning all
We had a young family come visit with their 2 year old yesterday. Too bad we can't tap into the energy and curiosity and the simple pleasures of the young ones. We grow to be tired and cynical as we age. Perhaps we should strive to find the kid still inside us?
Have a good day everybody.
“Until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”
Good morning, Lookout.
I think I and many of my friends became largely tired and cynical in our late pre-teens or early teens. Later, as we aged, we went through brief periods or stages when we would experience and become that "inner kid" for a while, but it has become not so much a desired full time state as a sporadically sought out experience, thrill or epiphany. A momentary break, as it were.
Right now, I personally am thinking about ollas, homebrew, terra cotta. I think some of our losses during our absence might've been prevented or ameliorated by better watering. Ollas should be an answer, of a partial answer - I shall see.

Accidentally dropped in on TOP today.
One of my friends dropped a link, and whaddya know, they still can't get over us.
Now they're pissed because we use acronyms instead of bothering to fully type out names.
And we're apparently idiots because of that whole "Don't really give a crap about Russia" thing.
The MIC is desperate to frame this as a fight for survival, and I'm laughing my fucking ass of about it. Maybe the Empire's survival, but that assumes I give a crap about the Empire.
Frankly, all they've got left are insults and mud to throw, and I have no intentions of bothering with their insults or changing my attitudes to please them.
To quote my Favorite Philosopher, Antisthenes
And a new Poem Is up. It's Demeter, and there's a bit of my own past pain in this one, so if it's a bit bitter, I apologize.
I do not pretend I know what I do not know.
Excellent points, all of them. One could write a large tome
about all the bitterness and vindictiveness of the Hillary worshippers and ideologues and its wellsprings and causes, but it is more work than I feel like undertaking.

What's HILARIOUS to me...
Talk about Deja Vu. It's always the fault of
SATANRussians, and any criticism is in fact a sign ofTHE DEVILTrump. Every denial of their accusations is just more proof that indeed we were involved inHuman SacrificeChair Throwing andKilling BabiesNot caring enough about Immigrant Babies!Serious, I'm starting to get how the idiots won. How those that favored unthinking obedience and repetition of lies preferable to searching for the truth, forever mutable and changing. Heh, Fire and wind come from the Gods of the Sky...

More than welcome.

Thanks el! Hey, I finally agree something Trumps said.
...
We were just in South Africa for our annual camping in our own tent safari in Kruger NP.
Obama will probably be welcomed but I would tell them they should not trust a thing he says any more than they do Trump.
My guess this is part of a plan to sow the seeds of neo-liberalism under the guise of Mandela's legacy, but that's just me.
Edited to add linky.
A truth of the nuclear age/climate change: we can no longer have endless war and survive on this planet. Oh sh*t.
Good morning, do. I agree with your suspicions. The
great neoliberal juggernaut will continue and will continue to misrepresent itself as progressivism.

Heh, wonderful qoute, QMS. I don't remember 16 so
much as I recall the acts, activities and actions. There was a pall hanging over everything, but it was also, in many ways, golden, and crazy, and zen.

She needs her own quote page in Google.
Yesterday was already a great day for humans who stand against war. Now we have a great quote to attach to tag the day with its historical context.
We (the anti-war) must define and archetype the evolutionary throwbacks who work against us. This is how we can help future generations recognize and guard against the planet-killing forces of devolution.
IMAGINE if you woke up the day after a US Presidential Election and headlines around the the world blared, "The Majority of Americans Refused to Vote in US Presidential Election! What Does this Mean?"
We need a workers party yesterday.

I am witnessing the gentrification of the
stock market. A utility in which I had some stock has ended their common stock. They are buying me out. Only preferred stock is issued now, though one might wonder what it is preferred to. They are freeing themselves from stockholder uprisings. Kind of Wall Street’s version of a gated community.

A utility, huh?
Let's nationalize their asses.

I’m worried about them privatizing mine wherein I
have no controlling interest. Billionaires are scary.
