German MEP threatens Troika may ‘invade Rome,’ but told to ‘mind own business’

Three days after Italy plunged into a deep political crisis, its tensions with Brussels and Berlin took another leap when an EU politician warned of an “invasion” of Rome if the economic situation worsens.

The finger-wagging came from German politician and member of the European Parliament Markus Ferber. He claimed that the almighty Troika – the International Monetary Fund, the European Commission, and the European Central Bank – might be forced to take extreme measures and 'invade' Italy. For its own good.

“In the worst case scenario, Italy – as Greece – will go bankrupt,” the German politician said in an interview published by a correspondent of German ZDF TV. “Then the Troika will have to invade Rome and take over Italy’s Ministry of Finance.” ...

... Coming only a day after the EU budget chief’s major gaffe, Ferber’s voicing of the Troika’s plans to force Rome to obey the Eurozone sounded perilously similar to what already happened in Greece.

Back in 2015, the Greek people loudly opposed austerity measures enacted by the Troika. Greece tried to resist pressure from EU officials to meet their severe budget targets, but, under intense pressure from Brussels and Berlin, the Greek government closed its eyes to the will of the austerity-weary people and enacted even tougher measures.

Syrian President Bashar Assad says Moscow deterred the West from launching a devastating country-wide air strike last month, and believes that Damascus has nearly won the seven-year war, despite continued US “interference.”

“With every move forward for the Syrian Army, and for the political process, and for the whole situation, our enemies and our opponents, mainly the West led by the United States and their puppets in Europe and in our region, they try to make it farther – either by supporting more terrorism, bringing more terrorists to Syria, or by hindering the political process,” Assad told RT correspondent Murad Gazdiev, during a sit-down interview in Damascus, noting that without outside funding his opponents inside the country could be subdued “within a year.”

After having to switch its support between the various anti-Assad factions, and the recapture of the key cities of Aleppo and Deir ez-Zor by government forces over the past two years, Washington, the Syrian leader believes, is “losing its cards” and can be brought to the negotiating table. ...

... ‘World didn’t buy US chemical weapons story’

The Syrian leader believes, however, that the closer the deadly conflict comes to an end, the more desperate his opponents’ measures become. He cited the alleged Douma chemical weapon attack (“Is it in our interest? Why, and why now?” he asks) as a last-ditch Western attempt to sway international opinion – one that failed.

“They told a story, they told a lie, and the public opinion around the world and in the West didn’t buy their story, but they couldn’t withdraw. So, they had to do something, even on a smaller scale,” Assad said, referring to the joint airstrikes against purported Syrian chemical weapons facilities, carried out on April 14 by the US, UK, and France.

Assad says Moscow also played a role in restraining Washington’s influence and meddling in the region, both generally since its invitation to aid Damascus in September 2015, and in this particular incident.
‘Russia deterred larger-scale attack on Syria’

“The Russians announced publicly that they are going to destroy the bases that are going to be used to launch missiles, and our information – we don’t have evidence, we only have information, and that information is credible information – that they were thinking about a comprehensive attack all over Syria, and that’s why the threat pushed the West to make it on a much smaller scale,” the Syrian president said.

With Western ‘advisers’ deployed alongside their proxy forces in Syria, Assad also thanked Russia for not triggering face-to-face confrontation with the US, which is operating in close proximity both in the air and on the ground.

“We were close to have direct conflict between the Russian forces and the American forces, and fortunately, it has been avoided, not by the wisdom of the American leadership, but by the wisdom of the Russian leadership,” Assad told Gazdiev. “We need the Russian support, but we need at the same time to avoid the American foolishness in order to be able to stabilize our country.” ...

Since the Ubiquitous Spy-state of America insists that vulnerabilities be built into computers and other devices sold at home and abroad so that they (and others) can easily invade and attack them at leisure, I'd also wonder about defense systems and weapons sold to those they term 'allies', at least while currently useful and obedient to the Exceptional Ones.

US advises India to consider consequences of purchasing Russia’s S-400 systems

... “There is a lot of concern in the US administration and Congress with the S-400,” House Armed Services Committee chairman Mac Thornberry told India’s Economic Times daily, urging New Delhi not to rush and carefully consider all potential consequences of purchasing advanced Russian weapons. “There is concern that any country that acquires the system will complicate the ability of interoperability (with US forces).” ...

...The decision to purchase the S-400, which New Delhi is expected to announce in October, could jeopardize sales of US-built Predator drones, despite the Trump administration’s recently-announced plans to ease arms sales to foreign countries, including India. The changes are designed to allow US arms suppliers to sell weapons to allies directly, circumventing the state department, the Pentagon, and Congress.

“This is one of the areas where the acquisition of the Russian anti-aircraft system will make the acquisition of that technology somewhat more difficult,” he told NDTV.

India’s hopes for domestic production of F-16 fighters jets could also be at stake, in part because of the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA), which mandates the Trump administration to punish entities engaging in significant transactions with the defense sectors of Russia. ...

India to buy Russian S-400 systems despite Washington’s warnings - report

...Forced to choose between Russia and the US, New Delhi highlighted the need for a strong air defense given the fact the neighbouring China and Pakistan have already obtained advanced aerial capabilities.

India’s decision to rely on the Russian-made S-400 systems that have drawn a lot of interest from international buyers, could jeopardize sales of US-built Predator drones and Patriot missile defense systems. Though the US has been talking up the effectiveness of Patriots, the missile has reportedly been less than effective when used recently by Saudi Arabia.

According to NATO classification, S-400 Triumf is Russia's most advanced air defense hardware, boasting unique and unparalleled capabilities. Capable of firing three types of missiles create a layered defense, the S-400 integrates a multifunction radar, autonomous detection and targeting systems, missile launchers and command posts. It can bring down aircrafts as well as missiles at the range of up to 400km.

With Russia being India’s largest arms supplier, Moscow accounted for 62 percent of arms sales to New Delhi over the past five years, according to the Stockholm International Peace Institute.

India is not the only country that has been experiencing tough pressuring from Washington. The US has been very explicit in its criticism of its "strategic partner", Turkey and its deal with Russia to purchase the S-400 systems.

According to State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert, Washington is seriously concerned about the fact Turkey as a NATO member would choose to purchase weapons not made in the US. In a bid to pressure Ankara, Assistant US Secretary Wess Mitchell said that unless Turkey backed out, the purchase "could lead to sanctions.”

Testifying before the House Foreign Relations committee last week, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the US was making efforts to “keep the Turks in a place where they will never acquire the S-400.” ...
