Open Thread

The OT I wrote is not publishing, for some reason. I double-checked that I put "Open Thread" in the tags, which is my usual mistake on such occasions. All ship-shape, so I'm not sure what's gone wrong.

Anyhoo, here is a hasty and more traditional OT--in that it's simply me wishing y'all "good morning." Please bring up any topic you like! I'll be around.

@Cant Stop the Macedonian Signal @Cant Stop the Macedonian Signal good morning, I have no idea what is going on about posting essays. I looked at my account and saw no way to even create an essay, much less publish one. lol Edit: it's under the Navigation menu, sorry I forgot, and the scheduler is just fine thank you. /endedit The scheduler says I have no nodes available, that is always a problem in my view. More nodes are what we need more of. heh At least it isn't drupalgeddon2 or 3, or whatever. Thanks JtC.

Candidates for California governor running to succeed Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown on Tuesday participated in their last major debate before the June 5 primary election at the California Theater in San Jose. The Sacramento Bee fact-checked their statements:

@eyo The entire electoral process is more or less kabuki, as far as I can see.

but glad to see you! The joys of technology. I'm a Luddite. I just got a little MP3 player. Took me a week to figure out how to download podcasts. Now that I've been through the learning curve it is no problem. I like Ralph Naders show, Caitlin Johnstones, the intercepted podcast, etc. I can download and listen in the garden, on the tractor, and in my travel truck (where there's a plug on the radio). Additionally it plays music files too. I found a site where you can download youtube to MP3 so that opens up Jimmy Dore and a wealth of music. https://online-audio-converter.com/ Of course most of you have smart phones that do the same thing (easier). All I have is a land line. Here in the 3rd world corner of AL there isn't a signal.

There is more stuff than I have ears for -

Another techno learning curve for me is a new Linux laptop. I got a cheap used laptop at Trade Day - wiped it clean and installed Artful Aardvark based on recommendations from members on this site. Seems really functional, but I'm still learning. I hope to get my most valued picture and document files over on it as another back up.

So here's to new technologies and all the inherent bugs in the system. I never dreamed in my youth I would have such easy access to info (I was a denizen of the library in college and knew my way around certain parts/sources). It is amazing when a question comes up - come back to the computer and find it almost instantaneously (provided I can remember the question I had originally)

All the best CStMS. No worries. Thanks for the OT.

PS the Florida Folk Festival in White Springs is around the corner. PM me if you're planning to attend and I'll let you know how to find our camp.

@Lookout
when it comes to this new tech.
Yesterday, I ticked off my SO when I was surfing on my smartphone and brought up a Youtube video that transferred, somehow, to my Samsung smart tv, interupting her soap opera at a crucial time in the plot.
It took me 10 minutes to figure out how to get it back on her channel.
I asked her if she could catch up tomorrow.
Leftovers for dinner last night, ugh.

@Lookout Holy shit, what a great idea! Just looking into it now. Not sure if it's too late to reserve a campsite. It looks like a little over an hour away from Gainesville, so maybe we could do a day trip.

Not that I think petitions really do anything...
https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/house-must-vote-on-unconstitutional-...

from an email:

House Must Vote on Unconstitutional U.S. Role in Catastrophic Saudi War in Yemen

Here's a key step to end the escalating disaster in Yemen, widely agreed to be the worst currently on earth. The Pentagon lied that U.S. troops aren't on the ground there, and that it would end participation.

Read and sign this petition, which we will deliver to Congress.
https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/house-must-vote-on-unconstitutional-...

The U.S.-backed Saudi war and blockade in Yemen has caused the worst humanitarian crisis in the world, with millions of human beings on the brink of famine as a result of deliberate Saudi policy, with the worst cholera crisis in recorded history, with the sewer, water, health care, food, and education systems in collapse.

Click here to do something about it. Then forward this email to those who might join with us.

The Saudi war and blockade could not continue without U.S. participation and support: U.S. refueling of Saudi warplanes, U.S. targeting information, U.S. weapons, U.S. diplomatic cover at the United Nations. But in violation of the Constitution and the War Powers Resolution, U.S. participation continues, even though it was never authorized by Congress and would remain illegal under the United Nations Charter even if it were.

In order to defeat the Sanders-Lee-Murphy resolution in the Senate to end unconstitutional U.S. participation, Defense Secretary James “Mad Dog” Mattis promised that the U.S. would work to end the war. But apparently that was a lie. The war continues, and the Saudi attacks on civilians continue. On April 22, at least 20 people attending a wedding party in northern Yemen, including the bride and several children, were reported to have been killed by a U.S.-assisted Saudi air strike.

The Senate has had an up-or-down recorded vote on U.S. participation in the war. But the House has not.

Urge your Representatives to insist on a recorded floor vote on ending unconstitutional, illegal, immoral, counterproductive U.S. participation in the catastrophic Saudi war in Yemen by signing our petition.
PETITION TO THE U.S. House of Representatives

In May, Representatives who oppose unconstitutional war must use consideration of the National Defense Authorization Act and the Department of Defense Appropriation to force floor votes on ending unconstitutional U.S. participation in the catastrophic Saudi war in Yemen. If the House leadership does not allow such votes, Representatives who oppose unconstitutional war must invoke the War Powers Resolution to force a floor vote on ending the unconstitutional war.

Add your name and then use the links provided to share with others.

Today the internet is going on RED ALERT for Net Neutrality, and we need you. Go red on your site and social media to help get the crucial last vote we need to save Net Neutrality.
GO RED

We’re on RED ALERT, GreatLakeSailor.

With just days until the crucial Senate vote to determine the future of our open internet and restore Net Neutrality, we’re joining with sites across the internet to launch a RED ALERT to secure the crucial 51st Senator to vote to overrule the FCC and save Net Neutrality.

Starting today — May 9th — and carrying through until the vote in the Senate, our websites and social media will be on RED ALERT, providing easy links for people to directly contact their representatives in Congress to demand they save Net Neutrality.

We need you too. Put your website or social media on RED ALERT for Net Neutrality.

You’ve been with us every step of the way in this long battle to save Net Neutrality, and now it’s down to this: We get the support of just one more senator, we win the vote and we ride that momentum into the House and save the Internet as we know it.

Or we lose, and the ISPs start slowing our speeds, limit or block access to competitors and sites they don’t agree with or just don’t like, and charge us all more in the process.

We can’t let this RED ALERT fail. The stakes are too high and the cost is too great. We’re giving this everything we’ve got, and we need you to too.

Join us as we turn the Internet red for Net Neutrality. Everything you need to be a part of this is right here.

This is the critical moment.

Thanks for standing with us.

Yours for an open Internet,

Dave, for the whole team at OpenMedia

has a mind of its own. I learned that when I was doing morning OT's. It is like your essay gets thrown into a spin and cannot get out. I see it is now up, so I guess the scheduler decided to release it from its spin. Wink

While my paralegal and I sat on my office back porch drinking coffee, planning the work of the day, the little thing came up on the porch and got a long drink of water in the bowl I have for whatever cats, possums, and coons are around.
It actually made eye contact with me, had no fear of us.
It is so tiny. Mouse size.
So far, so good. It knows where to get food and water.
