Addressing Recent Claims of “Manipulated” Blog Posts in the Wayback Machine

Some recent press stories (1, 2) have discussed archived blog posts of a prominent journalist, Joy Ann Reid, in the Wayback Machine and her claims that some of these posts were “manipulated” by an “unknown, external party”.

At some point after our correspondence, a robots.txt exclusion request specific to the Wayback Machine was placed on the live blog. That request was automatically recognized and processed by the Wayback Machine and the blog archives were excluded, unbeknownst to us (the process is fully automated). The robots.txt exclusion from the web archive remains automatically in effect due to the presence of the request on the live blog. Also, the blog URL which previously pointed to an msnbc.com page now points to a generic parked page.

from the EB links on this. Have to say I agree with Glenn on this one, if we cannot accept that people do grow out of the old ugly "tapes" we have all been fed living here in America, as I like to call them, then that condemns me forever to be an Obamabot and I'm not willing to accept that. I get it, maybe not a full equivalence to such ugly bigotry, but how else are we going to "win" that battle if we don't allow people to change?

But Joy Reid is too lame to just go on ahead and admit even when lying gets her nowhere. Only thing I can think is diversion, once again and Identity Politics wars that will never be won. Pay attention to the latest outrage, and by all means, spin that against "hackers" in any way you can. Such a tired old lame tactic to those of us out here. I swear these psychopaths get some jollies watching all of us who know better scream.

Isn't that the go to thing these days? Whenever someone screws up they say that Russia did it. Apparently Russia has been manipulating us for over a decade and trying to sow discord and divide the country.

Did Joy just come out of nowhere or has she been around for awhile? I've never heard of her before Russia Gate started. She's full of spite for people she doesn't agree with. This is the opinion I got from seeing her a few times.

Russia Gate has brought out the worst in a lot people, hasn't it?

who, it seems, is an MSNBC newsbabe, and I make no apology for that description.

Not someone to whom I feel compelled to pay attention.

It shouldn't surprise anyone that Joy Reid holds anti-gay views. I discovered when I was in the Army that black people are about the most homophobic group of people around. One guy told me he wouldn't give his wife oral sex because there'd been penises "in there".

@edg

They were very vocal about gay rights and absolutely hated it when people said that the struggle for gay rights was a lot like the struggle for their civil rights.

Obviously it's not on the same level, but the principle was the same. The times I've watched Reid or read what she said I got the impression that she was full of vile.

While I'm not going to generalize about whether Black Americans are or are not more homophobic than other citizens (because I don't know), I can tell you that one of the main reasons Houston's HERO ordnance (Houston Equal Rights Ordinance) failed at the polls in 2015 was due to the strident opposition to it by Houston's major Black churches and/or their leadership.

As the ordnance failed spectacularly (almost two thirds voting "No"), who can say whether the Black churches lack of support tipped the scales. However, it wasn't just "lack of support." These churches actively worked against passive of the ordnance. Amazingly enough, the congregations of these Black churches would have been the primary beneficiaries of the law. This was never mentioned by the Black ministers and pastors; only the LGBT issues were mentioned.
