I think the American Dream should be about a greater progressive legislation that allows for what I call a necessary future world of cooperational humanism.
- Bobby Seale

Humanists have more soul than Christians. Current events tend to depreciate my mood, reading about or listening to the soulless gun huggers, money grubbers and domination practitioners tends to sour my mood. Music treats the symptoms. How about some soul?

Soulsville Foundation

Founded in 1998 as the Ewarton Foundation, the Soulsville Foundation is the 501 c 3 parent organization that operates the Stax Museum of American Soul Music, Stax Music Academy, and The Soulsville Charter School. Its offices are in the Stax Music Academy building. Motown

Above the front windows of Motown Records' Detroit headquarters was a sign that read "Hitsville U.S.A." Placed there by Motown founder Berry Gordy soon after his company moved into the modest home at 2648 W. Grand Blvd, the sign demonstrated Gordy's blazing — and at the time, unearned — arrogance. Then the slogan came true.

Founded on Jan. 12, 1959, Motown quickly became another Detroit factory; where the Big Three produced automobiles, Motown assembled the soul and pop classics that changed America. There's no hyperbole in that statement. Arriving at the height of the civil rights movement, Motown was a black-owned, black-centered business that gave white America something they just could not get enough of — joyous, sad, romantic, mad, groovin', movin' music. (See an audio slideshow of five of Motown's best tunes.)

Philadelphia International Records

Philadelphia International Records (PIR) is an American record label based in Philadelphia. It was founded in 1971 by the writer-producer duo, Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff, along with their long time collaborator Thom Bell. It was famous for showcasing the Philadelphia soul music genre (also known as Philly soul) that was founded on the gospel, doo-wop, and soul music of the time. This Philly Soul sound later became a prominent and distinct era within R&B itself. During the 1970s the label released a string of worldwide hits which emphasized lavish orchestral instrumentation, heavy bass, and driving percussion.
Some of their most popular and best selling acts included Patti LaBelle, The O'Jays, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, Teddy Pendergrass, MFSB, Billy Paul, and Lou Rawls. Between 1971 and the early 80s, the label sold over 170 gold and platinum records.

Philadelphia International Records has been mostly defunct since 1987, and finally shut down in 2001. As of 2007, Sony Music Entertainment owns all rights to the Philadelphia International Records music catalogue.

Revisiting Loma Records, the L.A. Soul Label That Launched Ike and Tina Turner

Soul music devotees have long wondered why Los Angeles didn’t field a great 1960s soul record label like Motown or Stax. Hollywood was fast becoming the recording capital of the country and Motown would indeed relocate here by the end of the decade. Couldn’t the town produce a first-class soul label?

The question is not entirely fair to L.A. Motown and Stax filled vacuums in Detroit and Memphis, respectively. Both cities had much more black musical talent than they did recording outlets. In L.A., on the other hand, all of the major labels were represented, and a constellation of smaller indies such as Original Sound and Del-Fi operated around them. The two long-established rhythm and blues companies, Modern and Specialty, had catalogs dating back to the 1940s but more or less sat out the ’60s soul boom that exploded all around them.

Sehorn’s Soul Farm

Here’s a welcome return of an old friend (two actually), and a reminder that for every Irma Thomas, Lee Dorsey, the Meters, King Floyd and Jean Knight who made hits in New Orleans in the 1960s and ’70s, there were a score of neighborhood hit makers including Eldridge Holmes, Warren Lee, Zilla Mayes and Willie West. The bulk of the material on this double CD was originally released on locally distributed labels like DeeSu, Sansu, White Cliffs and Tou-Sea, all of which were owned at least in part by the late Marshall Sehorn. Some only sold a few hundred singles, but these Allen Toussaint-produced tracks are as good, if not better, than anything else he produced before or after.

Now I feel better! How about a Godfather of Soul outro?

Have a great weekend!

My son and his wife are moving to Binghamton, NY. They are currently holed up at Aunt Judy's in Columbus, Ohio due to the storm moving in. They hope to be able to get to their destination on Sunday. We'll see. I just want them to be safe. We helped them pack up their uhaul last weekend. Hard to believe the time has flown by.

Not much on my plate for the weekend other than heading to Santa Fe tomorrow to do some business and see some family.

Thanks for the music history lesson. That's some of my favorite.

Hope you are doing well and are holed up for the storm, as well.

Have a beautiful day and weekend, folks! Pleasantry

@Raggedy Ann Our storm consists of 50's and high winds. The record label theme narrowed the play list, but I can sneak favorites into the comments.

@NCTim I was going to include Hi records, but that would have given me two Memphis labels.

New and one of Robert Cray's better records.

On Thursday, the heightened anxiety within the community prompted a 30-minute lockdown at Piner High School. A concerned citizen called authorities to report a man, wearing a black trench coat and gas mask, was approaching campus with a rifle.

It turned out to be a young man holding an umbrella and wearing a pair of headphones, the Santa Rosa Police Department said.

@QMS I regularly attend The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. About five years ago, Al Green and Bruce Springsteen were scheduled to play, at the same time. I have several buddies that are big Springsteen fans, who were cajoling me to go see Bruce. Sue was along and I am no fool, so I told them, "You have to be funkin' kidding, I am here with my wife and Al Green is playing!". I held Sue and we swayed to Al Green, a cherished memory. Al Green is an all time favorite and powerful aphrodisiac.

@NCTim the reverend Al defined the capacity for 'love' in an otherwise cold world. Thinking also of the Jazz Fest this year. Some of the line-up...Aaron Neville. Bonnie Raitt, Aretha Franklin, David Byrne, Aerosmith(?), plus all the great gospel and local Dixieland jams. Po'boys and Hurricanes.
