Regarding c99% member "native".

native, who last posted here on Nov. 7, is our "ranchmate", having lived out here with us for years. On Nov. 17 he received a sudden and unexpected diagnosis of an untreatable metastasized cancer and has entered Home Hospice Care here at our home. He has declined very rapidly, is still conscious and somewhat coherent, but is mostly sleeping now.

native is at peace with his choice to refuse futile treatment and pass as quickly as he can and is in little pain or discomfort. We do not expect him to last another week.

(Update) 7:02
How fine it will be to relay these to native in the morning, when he has been most with us lately.

(Update) 7:15

I was just with native and spoke to him of all your good and kind thoughts towards him. His eyes lit up and he smiled in recognition and spoke thanks to you. I was blown away by his animation and delight and that he is still with us enough to hear you. Sadly the computer is not in his bedroom, but I think I will print out the whole thread tomorrow and read it to him.

(Update) Dec 1, 10:10am

What an amazing response from his friends here. I have printed out the (56) comment thread and will be reading it to native when he is next awake.

I appreciate all your thanks for the care native is receiving, but it has to be said that my partner, evelette, herself a cancer survivor and RN, is truly the primary caregiver and I merely serve as staff to her efforts and do what I can on the "physical plant" side of things here and provide a little muscle as needed.

(Update) 12:40 pm

native, or as we all called him here in meatspace, Lake, was awake for a while and I did indeed read him the comment thread. He listened with great interest to all your words, clearly moved to hear from you all. He heard the poetry you all sent and recognized some of your names, people he had been talking with here for years. This has meant much to him, and we thank you all for reaching out to help send him along peacefully. I wish I could share the light in his eyes as I was reading your thoughts to him. He heard you.

I will read more comments to him as they come and he is available to be with us.

he responded to one of my posts I felt a little privileged because i NEVER saw one thing of his that I disagreed with. And no matter the topic, he was never over-the-top or anything but always reasonable and rational.

He’s a total stranger (sort of) so why this makes me feel sad puzzles me in a way.

EDIT: typo. My phone has been acting squirrlier than ever since the IOS update. And then there’s my poor eyesite. People are lucky I don’t screw up more than I do.

I love this one and will sing it tonight - "Lay Down Your Weary Tune"
Here's Tim O'Brien (and Stuart on fiddle)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vMrUgTenC3A (3.5 min)

And three poems that speak to me...and perhaps to you and your fine friend Claude

“If I Should Die,” Emily Dickinson

If I should die,
And you should live,
And time should gurgle on,
And morn should beam,
And noon should burn,
As it has usual done;
If birds should build as early,
And bees as bustling go,–
One might depart at option
From enterprise below!
‘Tis sweet to know that stocks will stand
When we with daisies lie,
That commerce will continue,
And trades as briskly fly.
It make the parting tranquil
And keeps the soul serene,
That gentlemen so sprightly
Conduct the pleasing scene!

One more:

"And you as well must die,” Edna St. Vincent Millay

And you as well must die, belovèd dust,
And all your beauty stand you in no stead;
This flawless, vital hand, this perfect head,
This body of flame and steel, before the gust
Of Death, or under his autumnal frost,
Shall be as any leaf, be no less dead
Than the first leaf that fell, this wonder fled,
Altered, estranged, disintegrated, lost.
Nor shall my love avail you in your hour.
In spite of all my love, you will arise
Upon that day and wander down the air
Obscurely as the unattended flower,
It mattering not how beautiful you were,
Or how belovèd above all else that dies.

and one last poem:

“Death,” Rainer Maria Rilke

Before us great Death stands
Our fate held close within his quiet hands.
When with proud joy we lift Life’s red wine
To drink deep of the mystic shining cup
And ecstasy through all our being leaps—
Death bows his head and weeps.

“Until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”

My mother's passing, also with Hospice care, was a process of exceptional care and love. We brought her home for her last few days. When she arrived home and was told where she was and who was with her she smiled. She knew and understood.

Her last words had been spoken days before and her eyes had been open only briefly, sleeping almost constantly. But she was still there. Those of us with our feet firmly planted on this side of what we call life see a person transitioning at the end of their life in what looks to us to be deep sleep and assume that they are unaware. Not necessarily so. They can be very much present to their reality, both here and there, even if they appear to just be sleeping.

On Death
Kahlil Gibran

You would know the secret of death.
But how shall you find it unless you seek it in the heart of life?
The owl whose night-bound eyes are blind unto the day cannot unveil the mystery of light.
If you would indeed behold the spirit of death, open your heart wide unto the body of life.
For life and death are one, even as the river and the sea are one.

In the depth of your hopes and desires lies your silent knowledge of the beyond;
And like seeds dreaming beneath the snow your heart dreams of spring.
Trust the dreams, for in them is hidden the gate to eternity.
Your fear of death is but the trembling of the shepherd when he stands before the king whose hand is to be laid upon him in honour.
Is the shepherd not joyful beneath his trembling, that he shall wear the mark of the king?
Yet is he not more mindful of his trembling?

For what is it to die but to stand naked in the wind and to melt into the sun?
And what is it to cease breathing, but to free the breath from its restless tides, that it may rise and expand and seek God unencumbered?

Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing.
And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb.
And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance.

Wow, thanks for the link! A thought/discussion-provoker of an essay. Native has always been invaluable... In some circumstances and in certain ways, shit needs to be periodically stirred so that it can compost properly in order to produce things which are more useful than a smell, lol.

Personally, I felt that this part of Raggedy Ann's answer came close to what would have been my own, although her's was better-phrased then mine would have been:

Submitted by Raggedy Ann on Thu, 09/15/2016 - 9:25pm

It is a community to me.

Perhaps I'm being too individualistic as I can only answer for myself and feel kind of selfish about everyone here being a sort of friend of mine, but I come here to interact with the other voices here. I love reading what they have to say and I love commenting when it feels right to me, but the best part is that I learn so much from everyone. ...

And thought that mimi had an interesting analysis there, amid a variety of viewpoints of interest.

I always miss so much here, as it's often hard to keep up on the essays, lol, and I'm glad to have had the opportunity to have read that one.

Native also saw this:

What I see here, is one set of oligarchs hurling (or manufacturing) propaganda against another set of oligarchs. It's the Doligarchs versus the Roligarchs -- how exciting! They call this shit-slinging "opposition research" which makes it sound respectable. Sounding respectable is very important for Party big shots. And paying women to pee on you is of course not very respectable.

But media-types will gobble up this disinformation like candy, the more salacious the better. I mean since they're not really allowed to talk about anything important. Except for maybe starting a war with Russia -- they'd all like to do that if possible. Hardly anyone would object to fighting a war with Russia, except for maybe Trump. But he is probably being blackmailed by Putin, so that must be why.

and this:

I think Trump is doing a fairly good job
@CS in AZ
of wrecking the American Empire all on his own. A war with Iran or North Korea would certainly hasten its demise -- but even without that, US global credibility is being ruined by extremely poor diplomacy and a clearly fruitless militarism. None of which is specifically Trump's doing, but is rather the continuation of long-term, fully entrenched, and bipartisan policy objectives. Our Ship of State seems unwilling, or unable to change its course, even though it is headed straight for the rocks.

Internally, neither of the two Parties retain any significant degree of public confidence, yet the System allows for no viable alternative. The underclass (both right and left) grows ever larger and more restive, while billionaires proliferate everywhere like mushrooms. President Trump's ignorantly whimsical leadership merely accelerates these unfortunate trends. They will continue whether he is "stopped" or not. The neoliberals who now control the Democratic Party may well reach an accommodation with the hard right, but I doubt they will ever again be able to inspire a massive voter turnout.

and finally this one:

Where's the proof?
@gulfgal98

I don't see any proof. To me this looks more like a wild goose chase than anything else. Wishful thinking amplified X 1000.

Of course I would be happy to be proven wrong.

You have been proven right more than we could know. Kudos to your searches for proofs. That's what we needed. And you gave your best to offer it.

I had in my life during the last 20 years five on and off loved ones dying. And I wasn't physically present during their passing. Especially for the death of my mother I regret so much to have not been able to hold her hand while she was going to the other side.

I think many here would love to hold your hand, native, if you hear me, and I hope that you might just feel our virtual tenderly hand-squeezing. I wished you could tell us what you see on that other side. We have to be patient to follow you there to know it all.

Thanks for everything.

@mimi
I would characterize them as fluorescent as opposed to incandescent: shedding light as opposed to heat.

A perfect choice of characterization for a leading light.

Psychopathy is not a political position, whether labeled 'conservatism', 'centrism' or 'left'.

A tin labeled 'coffee' may be a can of worms or pathology identified by a lack of empathy/willingness to harm others to achieve personal desires.

Lake, I've just heard the news. I haven't been around these parts for a while, but I have missed you. One of my fondest memories was of meeting you in Albuquerque and enjoying the images of your art you sent.

Be at peace and in comfort. I am a better person for having known you, and thank you from the bottom of my heart. You are a part of more of us than you'll likely ever know.

I remember waving goodbye to my grandmother in her hospital bed, c. 1968, not knowing what brain cancer was, aged 5.

Good luck and god speed.

think over again my small adventures
my fears
those small ones that seemed so big
for all the vital things
i had to get and to reach
and yet there is only one great thing
the only thing
to live to see the great day that dawns
and the light that fills the world
