Vermont senator had trailed in polls by more than 20 points but opposition to free trade and growing African American support won votes in rust-belt state

Bernie Sanders pulled off his biggest win of the Democratic presidential race on Tuesday, defeating Hillary Clinton in the Michigan primary on a night which also confirmed strong anti-establishment support for Donald Trump in the battle for the Republican nomination.

In an industrial state hit hard by the decline of manufacturing, the Vermont senator’s consistent opposition to free trade deals appears to have been a decisive factor, but he also showed signs of weakening Clinton’s dominance among African American voters.

don't know what Markos will do after the 15th. We'll think it's a race, he might not. But we know he's prone to having these fits where he thinks he's the big leader so whether it's the 15th or whether it's April 1st, sooner or later he's going to go bananas again. Three Vermont superdelegates have joined Rep. Peter Welch in pledging their support for Bernie Sanders in his bid for the Democratic nomination.
Secretary of State Jim Condos and Rep. Tim Jerman, D-Essex Junction, made their announcement at the Statehouse in Montpelier Tuesday afternoon, saying they waited until after the Vermont presidential primary on March 1 to make their decision to back Sanders. Vermont Democratic Party Chairwoman Dottie Deans sent out a statement at about the same time to say she also would be supporting Sanders.
