Has the Radical Center Lost Its Way? (Updated)

CentristRetards.png

Earlier this year in May, Dave Anderson penned an op-ed at The Hill, entitled "Why The Radical Center Must Be the Future of American Politics." Inspired by Emmanuel Macron's presidential election in France, Anderson believed that the radical center was the "new new" of the centrism for the US.

Macron’s victory in France signals a victory for those independent-minded politicians and citizens who wish to transcend the polarized politics of establishment liberals and establishment conservatives in the name of a new center, not a moderate center associated with United States and United Kingdom “Third Way” politics but what has been described as Macron’s “radical center” point of view.

Those in the radical center — and there are American thinkers who have used this phrase — shy away from adopting moderate policies which represent a compromise between left and right. The radical center aims to be more ambitious than the moderate center.

So what does Anderson mean by "radical center"?

This point of view speaks to millions of Americans, many of whom vote Republican and Democrat today, who do not identify with the far right of the Republican Party or the far left of the Democratic Party. They currently sit in the middle and many are Independents.

They are waiting for someone to articulate the values and policies of the radical center, which admittedly leans more toward the Democrats than the Republicans.

It is time to articulate those values and policies, but it is necessary to drop the phrase “radical center” and find a new one.

I've wondered if GOS has been attempting to posit himself in this radical center since November 9. The day after the election, GOS went on a tirade about the Dem Party, fishing for answers:

All that said, I understand many of the arguments against Sanders—that he hasn’t previously focused on party building, or that he isn’t the best coalition builder (a key requirement at the DNC). I am angry, and want someone angry leading the party. He’s an outsider, and maybe I DO want someone to blow up the party. But is that the best longer-term approach? So I admit, I may not be in the best frame of mind for this right now.

But there are others who could fit the bill. Elizabeth Warren, obviously. She’d get under Trump’s skin on a daily basis, and could lead the fierce opposition both from inside the Senate, and as party leader. I’d be 100 percent into that. And there’s something valuable in responding to an election based on xenophobia, racism, and misogyny with a strong woman.

So the suggestion of Elizabeth Warren would possibly fill the bill of a "radical center." After all, she is further to the left than Clinton on domestic policy, foreign policy views not terribly developed at this juncture, other than she stands with Israel.

Then GOS decided his site would be the mecca for identity politics, including that embracing his own Latino heritage, and if any Democrat didn't get with his program, they would be banned or at least marginalized more with time-outs/warnings than the purge of the Ides of March, the progenitor of C99 and some other sites, K4S, TPW, or WoTB. Part of the marginalization process included joining a chorus of establishment pundits who rebranded anyone who supported Bernie Sanders as the Alt-Left, especially on twitter. Several C99 essays have been penned on the topic, so I won't rehash those, but only to point out one tweet from a couple of weeks ago, after the protests in Charlottesville elevated the conversation about Alt-Rights who supported white supremacy:

https://twitter.com/markos/status/896747477428314112
Anyone still pretending last year's election was about "economic anxiety" anymore? I mean, outside of the alt-left that is.

GOS doesn't seem to think there can be an intersectionality of social and economic justice as many of the progressive left believe, but in taking the radical center, he's choosing identity politics.

Trump co-opted Alt-Left to mean to all of the Resistance, including GOS's own idea of resistance. So what the next thing if identity politics is your meme. You criticize your own PoC community.

Here's the tweet that has incensed quite a few on twitter.

https://twitter.com/markos/status/901250617783468032

White supremacist presidents will pardon other white supremacists. That's what happens when communities of color don't vote.

I surmise that one of the reasons GOS made that tweet was to draw attention to his site to see who would be challenging him directly for his shock jock comment. TOP's numbers have been tanking...

AlexaTOPgraph.png

With all of the "reporting" of surveys about who voted for Trump, in which anyone who can read datacharts, it's clear that it's about the Indies.

Ah yes, poor turnout by Dems. Just ask some of the TOP loyalists.

And to what end will this serve the voter (whom GOS continues to hammer for voting for Trump, deserving to lose any health benefits they may have) who lost her/his job in OH, WI, or MI? To blame the most popular politician in America who's got the microphone. So enter Peter Daou, former clinton campaign adviser and editor of Shareblue. (note: I had thought Daou had been pushed out by Brock, but I cannot find evidence to attest to it, this is a slight revision). Shareblue was formerly Blue Nation Review, but it has continued relentless attacks on Bernie Sanders.

https://twitter.com/peterdaou/status/901190053480759296

I'm far more interested in seeing a real Democrat focusing on the concerns of Democratic voters, not non-Dem Sanders courting GOP voters.

Drink your latte, Peter Daou as you and the Elites watch create your own version of Steve Bannon.

Did this mean "can't" vote because they were disenfranchised? Because last I checked, 94% of black women chose Hillary. THEY got it right. --Peter Daou on twitter

Update: GOS has clarified a little on twitter his reaction was about Trump's pardon of Joe Arpaio, but this tweet drips of irony (or maybe GOS is very tone-deaf):

https://twitter.com/markos/status/901484435521937408

This is why the GOP fights to hard to deny marginalized communities the vote. It's the only way they stay in power. We must fight that.

He's marginalizing bloggers on his own site while believeing that he's still the Resistance. Still trying to keep the power. Thus, he thinks he's still the radical center. I think he, Daou, and others have lost their way. Scolding voters is not the way to win elections.

If there is a radical center, it belongs to one of the best satirical blogs, who seems to be more accurate in political archery, The Onion. I posted their article about it here. Using Clinton's forthcoming book "What Happened", they mocked Clinton, Daou, the Meese, and yes, GOS/TOP.

The other formidable archer of the day belongs to Mike Casca, former staffer for Bernie Sanders:

https://twitter.com/cascamike/status/901263373660237828

As I do not understand how to embed a tweet (there isn't anything available in the help section), you will need to click on the link to the tweet to see its humor.

There's probably that. None of us on the progressive left are pleased about it. But I don't blame folks who are no longer protected for their right to vote. Voter suppression is still an issue, as well.

I missed this article, but someone at TPW pointed this out awhile ago:
How a New Generation of Progressive Activists Is Leading the Trump Resistance

Looking ahead, Democratic Party leaders are determined to ride this political uprising to victory in the House in 2018. But neither the DNC nor the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee have shown the technological savvy or comfort with grassroots engagement to create a platform for this activism within the party itself. Indeed, for many of the activists on the ground, the current Democratic Party appears less a vehicle for change than an obstacle to it. "The party is utterly irrelevant," says Markos Moulitsas, the 45-year-old founder of Daily Kos, a pioneer of the "netroots" that has become a hub for digital resistance in the Trump age. Noting that there are thousands of registered Democrats in every congressional district, even the reddest ones, Moulitsas adds, "If we get 10,000 people volunteering and create a culture where being a liberal citizen in America is normal – you will volunteer, you will be a part of that army every year – that changes the equation and empowers the dominant liberal majority that actually exists in this country. But the party has nothing to do with it."

Oh yes, the "grand daddy of the resistance".

Sounds like his book isn't selling too well either.

This makes as much sense as when he said that "issues aren't important right now".
BFD that thousands of people are marching in women's genitalia hats. Where were they when Obama's foreign policies were much worse than Bush's?
Or when his drones killed people at weddings and then the people who came to help them?
Or the heinous war crime of bombing the hospital in Afghanistan for over an hour?
Or, or, or......
Rumors are that Soros is funding many of these protests, just like the Koch brothers funded the tea party.

If you look at some of GOS' tweets this year, he is quick to point out how much money TOP raised for congressional candidates in the special elections this year, more so than DCCC. Of course, TOP gets 40-50% of the cut, so I'm still wondering how much the candidates received in reality. The other is that the DNC and DCCC aren't doing very well at the moment, which is another point he would make.

Remember, it's all about the money and winning with establishment media.

But Ossoff lost big time. Still an embarrassment for TOP. I guess he'll blame PoC for that loss too.

I knew that he sold people's email addresses if they signed one of the countless petitions and that he took a cut from the act blue donations.
During the special elections after the elections, there were countless diaries that asked if people could share $1-3 to help get a candidate elected and they had petitions to stop this, that and everything else.
I wonder how many people were aware of how little of their money went to the actual candidates. Or if they would even care.

the party that has stood for women to have the right to control their own bodies is now a thing of the past.
This was diaried at ToP and of course there were many people that thought this was ok. Anything is acceptable for them now as long as there is a chance for the DP to retake congress.
But if that happens, then they will be the new improved republican party. And they are too dense to understand that every time you lower your principles, then don't expect them not to continue going lower still.

The issue is that they have no principles. Ask yourself what the Democratic party believes in other than winning. Ask yourself what the posters over at KOS believe in other than winning. When was the last time you saw them draw a line and say, "That's not democratic. I don't support you." (other than Bernie of course).

The people left at GOS are the perfect reflection of the Democratic party. They are without moral or ethical guidance.

getting summaries here. If I didn't I'd break down and look sometimes. I appreciate people taking the time and stress to go back. I think the result is probably fewer clicks for the GOS.

I have no problem understanding why many would rather never here the name of Markos or DK again. Maybe we could agree that some kind of warning would be in the essay's title. That way people who do not want to deal with the GOS could avoid the subject.

From the number of comments these essays typically generate it seems to me that a lot of us, in spite of our existence on a higher, more forgiving moral plane, get a great deal of satisfaction learning the details when somebody over there makes an ass of himself. (Not every case. I don't want C99% to be the anti-KOS. Just the really big ones.)

I go to DKOS along with a wide variety of other sites not so I can "tell" but because they are my active enemy and I want to know what they are doing. Ignoring DKOS is akin to ignoring the Democratic party. It makes little sense to do so given the power they have and the corresponding harm they can cause.

They may well see it in such childish terms. You might for all I know. I certainly do not. I think there is a life & death war going on and our side is losing and dying.

Good point! But if the voters they stated they didn't need or want, because of gaining mass quantities of Republican center-people by dumping them, had given the Dems the votes they so clearly owed them anyway, Her could doubtless have started the global nuking of Her lucrative dreams from her off-shore and sadly cancelled-due-to-everyone-else-losing-Her-the-Election 'fireworks' ship immediately!

Also, it must be hard for rabid Hillary defenders to keep all of Her contradictory claims straight, so why should they bother even trying?

After all, they thought that waaaaaay more people were stupid enough to vote for Her because Trump, which means that Non-Billionaire Americans in general must be also too stupid to keep Her myriad and contradictory claims straight anyway, so it's not just Hillary supporters, in this case evidently saying whatever suits current talking point memos and going with something from Her frantic excuse flow.

And Her won the popular vote, so there! If only the Russians hadn't hacked the once-perfectly-acceptable-when-bought-for-Clinton Electoral College!

Wait, they haven't used that one yet, have they? I wonder why... unless Her has been promised the next Presidential win by TPTB and Homeland Security? They do want what they think will be plausible 'wins' for their Chosen Ones...

Maybe the repelled voters will be 'smarter' than they know, when Her wins Her Royal Coronation as President by a landslide in a country full of people not voting and not needing to have voted for Her at all, next time? Hell, Her's so experienced and smart that Her doesn't even need to know what Her's doing in essential public offices, never mind follow basic National Security protocols.

Worse than Trump, gawd 'elp us, every one...

According to the graphs that show how which group of people voted, if white people hadn't voted, Hillary would have won.
More than 50% of white women voted for Trump.
And what Markos should be saying, is that if Obama had done more for mainstream Americans, there would be no way that Trump would have won. Income inequality got much worse under his administration, but that hit the Black community the hardest.

He knows damn well that the republicans have gerrymandered many districts and voter ID laws hit minority communities the hardest.

BTW Markos, do you want to know what would have kept Trump out of the White House?
The DNC not stealing the primary from Bernie, you POS!
Gawd! You just can't understand why Hillary lost to the second worse candidate ever, can you?
I have a great idea for you.
Go back to the two opinion articles you wrote about her in 2006.
In the first one, you laid out all the reasons why she wasn't a good candidate.
Then remember that she got much worse since then.
Or you can ask the living people from Iraq, Libya, Syria, Honduras, Ukraine and the rest of the countries that she had a hand in destroying or fucked up.
You can also ask the children from those countries that tried to get to this country because of her actions in theirs.

And yes, this tweet was in response to Trump pardoning Arapio.

Does it mean the "Putin did it." meme has run its course? Is it the first attempt to entice the Bernie backers who wrote provocative essays that generated traffic back? I can't believe he's backing off on his "Let coal miners eat shit and die." wish.

My best guess is that none of the proposed explanations for Her's loss explain enough to avoid allocating a substantial portion of the responsibility to Her campaign. I think they need to aggregate all the other explanations. Her lost because of Bernie, Bernie Bros, Putin, Comey, misogynists, especially female misogynists, (There's a special place in hell for them.), bigoted whites who voted for Obama, and now PoC who didn't turn out. I'm sure I'm leaving out a few and have no doubt that a team at the Clinton Foundation is looking for more.

Notice there is not the slightest effort to understand why these people did not turn out or marked another candidate. The existence of Trump provided an ontological reason to vote for Hillary. I know because every one of Her's commercials I saw told me so.

It appears that the Democratic establishment is going to spend the next 3 years attempting to prove that Her's loss was not Her fault. Maybe that will be their central issue of the 2020 campaign. Meanwhile, Her will rotate among mansions meeting with big donors who tell her the problem was that the electorate is unworthy of Her while occasionally making a brief statement, jaw firmly set, that she's leading the resistance.

Since this evidently regards people determinedly plunging up their own rear ends, which would be about the only 'radical' possibility for those purportedly in that mythical 'centre', wouldn't 'shit-heads' be a more appropriately descriptive term than 'radical centrists' - specifically for those politicians, PR people and others claiming the term 'radical centrists' applies to regular Americans quite simply often very sensibly refusing to vote for such shit-heads?

This method of courting theoretically prospective voters makes me think of a number of guys over the years who actually told me that I was 'too fussy' because they didn't appeal to me and I (tactfully) didn't want to go out with them, thereby transferring the entirely valid (if unspoken) reasons for that in a manner which outstandingly confirmed said reasons... but what else can be expected from those desperate to screw others?

From what I gather, the black protestors were angry because of the placement of the speaker, not to mention that Evans was in favor of school vouchers. There's more, but I'll start with the cut & paste:

On Saturday morning, many of the black women I knew who were at the conference participated in a planned protest during the morning plenary. This was discussed on Friday so we knew it was happening and why. It was in response to Stacey Evans, a Democratic candidate for governor in Georgia who is a white woman, and her planned speech at Netroots. There were several reasons that they wanted to protest her appearance. In part, it was a response to her invitation to the conference—period. Evans is a supporter of school vouchers and has voted to take millions from Georgia public school funding. Education is a central part of black women’s political and social platform—both for our own children and for our community. To many of us, school vouchers and charter schools are not progressive. In fact, they are very often the reason why Republicans take money away from the schools in our communities, leaving us with a lack of resources and schools with crumbling infrastructure.

So Evans’ presence at a conference which is supposed to be for progressives wasn’t well-received, along with the fact that she was slated to speak right before Becky Pringle, vice president of the National Education Association. Pringle is also a black woman. Lastly, some of the women were Stacey Abrams supporters. Abrams is the other Democratic candidate for governor in Georgia. It did not escape black women’s attention that while Stacey Abrams spoke on Thursday as part of a slate that had a number of candidates of color speaking, Stacey Evans was given a position to speak on the same day as Elizabeth Warren—a darling of the progressive community. It appeared as if this was an intentional way to elevate the candidacy of one woman over another, and the black woman was getting the short end of the stick.

The protest evolved. More from that same diary:

Trust that we believe that Stacey Evans’ stances on education are not good for us or our families and they are not progressive. Trust that our 94 percent percent voting record for Hillary in the 2016 presidential election means that we know what we are doing.

Speaking as someone who identifies more closely with Democratic Socialists (not the Socialists Alternative), I am against school vouchers as they drain resources from the greater pool necessary for good K-12 public education. But these same protesters voted for Barack Obama, and he hired for his Sec of Education a person who was widely known for supporting school vouchers in Chicago, Arne Duncan. Where was their outrage then?

The diarist claims the protesters were being shouted down by the white progressives in the room.

As soon as I heard the roar of white folks chanting “Let her speak” to the protesters, I ran to the front of the room. It was my intention to go to the stage and join and support my colleagues and fellow black women, since I knew exactly why they were doing this. I stopped however, when I got close to the stage and saw a black woman standing in between tables being shouted at and terrorized by two white people. She was not in front of the stage. She had stood up and joined other people who were offering their support of the protest and who were chanting in the audience. These two white people (a man and a woman), along with many others, decided that the protest was disrespectful and that Stacey Evans had the right to speak. They were yelling at this black woman with such intensity that it was overwhelming. At one point, the man was literally in her face screaming. I was afraid for her safety.

I was not present at the conference to confirm anything the diarist reported. But I guess it was enough for this new group to form at TOP on Friday, the TOP Equality Group. According to their profile, this is their purpose:

DK Equity Group is comprised of DK staff committed to eliminating white supremacy in Daily Kos and the movement. This account has multiple staff members who will identify themselves in written posts and will use personal accounts to comment.

The group's posted earlier this afternoon its first diary, entitled "Trust black women when they protest: a lesson for us white progressives & Netroots". This was the construct:

The white response of confronting the black protesters who opposed Stacey Evans and repeatedly asked all of us to "Trust Black Women" to make education decisions for their children, was terrible. Stacey Evans is in favor of school vouchers, privatization, and charter schools, which aren’t progressive values and disproportionately harm black children.

White progressives, we should honor protest, and we often do, when we consent to it. We should not attempt to silence the voices of black people who are speaking out in protest. As white progressives, we should recognize that we are perpetuating systems of white supremacy by telling groups of marginalized and impacted communities when, where, and how they can fight their oppression.

(emphasis is by the diarist, not mine)

It's similar to BLM's protest in AZ when NN2015 was held and to the protest in Seattle at a Bernie Sanders rally later on. Bernie respected the protesters, namely Symone Sanders, to make themselves heard.

What's ironic, is that same blog supported a candidate who was a centrist and still has supporters in a rebranded group, New Democracy, which met in CO two weekends ago. Fivethirtyeight pointed out the dichotomy of values messaging the New Democracy/Dem Party in this way:

But there is a real, pressing battle in the Democratic Party over identity issues too, with some in the party worried that movements like Black Lives Matter turn off white voters while others say the Democrats should speak bluntly and unequivocally on issues that particularly affect women and nonwhite voters.

“We also have to avoid vilifying people whose social views aren’t as ‘progressive’ as we think they should be,” reads the mission statement of a new group of centrist Democrats called New Democracy. The group, whose advisory board includes Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu and Alabama Rep. Terri Sewell, argues that “both parties have indulged in a civically corrosive form of identity politics.”

My original question was "Has the Radical Center Lost Its Way?" If TOP has decided that anyone who challenges the new TOP Equality staff in any fashion (and it's discovered one isn't PoC), then it's not progressive at all. And it's certainly not listening to New Democracy. TOP thinks it's the radical center. But I don't see how they can be when the former president was lauded at all costs despite continuing wars he promised to withdraw from or appoint peopleefor leading educational policy who were for school vouchers because it benefited students of color whose attended public schools were underfunded. Yes, Duncan abandoned it and shifted to competitive grants--still neoliberal policy; Betsy DeVos picked up the mantle but for privileged white students, more aligned with dismantling public education in general. Obama did not push very hard his Dem senators enough to get a vote for a centrist SCOTUS pick in 2016. So much for that radical center!

It seems part & parcel with the pattern that's been ongoing from at least 2016 primaries. This is their identity politics strategy ratcheted up to yet more desperate levels as they seek relevancy for neo-liberalism. What the comfortable will never understand is that while you're children are starving is not the time you care about esoteric social issues. Food is what you want. Sadly, things like food and shelter are not on the list of things neoliberalism has to offer for anyone but the very lucky few.

I might add that making up some stupid name for it is also just another play out of their standard playbook. They think they are experts at using obfuscating language. I think their expertise was rooted in control of the narrative and the information age has put a permanent end to that. Their ongoing efforts at censorship will fail.

"Radical Center": Could there be a more obviously Madison avenue Frankenstein creation -- "Yup dude! I"m a radically for the status quo!" It is an obviously ludicrous concept on the face of it clearly meant to attract young and gullible activists. They are welcome to any they can get with that drivel.

A lot of wanderers in the U.S. political desert recognize that all the duopoly has to offer is a choice of mirages. Come, let us trudge towards empty expanse of sand #1, littered with the bleached bones of Deaniacs and Hope and Changers.
