The takeover was planned at the higher levels. It was funded by republicans. Choices to elect became worse and worse, and now, people do not expect or demand much from their employees (politicians). The power difference between regular voters and the owners of Congress grew and grew.

I still wish to this day that the dems who quit Congress during the Newt Gingrich years had hung on a while longer.

grandparents built. Great folks, for the people and the workers, egalitarians, created the American middle class, fought for the safety nets, labor laws, minimum wages, civil rights, and a host of other great stuff. Their pictures hang all over the place and lots of people in town revere their memories.

But then your parents took over, who I hate to say it, are yuppy neo-liberal authoritarian meritocratic shits who got all the advantages of the society your greats and grands created and then proceeded to dismantle it. They and their friends have cocktail parties and fundraisers and pat themselves on the back for the very little tiny beensy bit of good they do when they're not hobnobbing and enriching themselves. The town has gone to shit, but they are unaware of it because they and their friends live in gated communities. You, their liberal offspring, who spent more time with your grandparents than them, now live in the basement on a pull-out couch. They begrudge your presence because they really want to build a wine cellar down there, and your whiny presence is a hindrance to them. They think its time for you to launch on your own, but you insist on hanging around because you're so emotionally attached to the old place. They've cut the heat off to the basement,and they only allow you upstairs every two years when there is a family event where they need you to put on a suit and turn out. They know you're a vegetarian, but they roast a whole pig and don't really serve anything you can eat, so you always leave these events hungry and then slink off back to the basement.

Given this scenario, IMO, it IS a moral failing to continue to live in the basement instead of moving out, getting an apartment, making new friends and hopefully building a house of your own where you can continue the traditions your grandparents started.
