Good morning 99percenters!
Some news and some Van Morrison.
Will Liberals and Conservatives Unite to Defeat Fast Track and the TPP?
In Ralph Nader’s recent book, “Unstoppable: The Emerging Left-Right Alliance to Dismantle the Corporate State,” the longtime labor- and consumer-rights activist predicts that shared agendas will forge new alliances between liberals and conservatives that could defeat crony corporatism.
An upcoming congressional vote on whether to give President Obama the power to secretly negotiate controversial international trade deals may have the potential to prove Nader right.
Obama has asked Congress to grant him trade promotion authority—also called “fast track”—over two deals. One of them, called the Trans-Pacific Partnership, or TPP, would be with a group of 11 other nations; the other, called the Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, or TTIP, would be with the European Union. The authority would allow him to negotiate and finalize the pacts without giving congressional lawmakers any input.
In fact, the specific provisions will not be revealed until after lawmakers have already voted on fast track. In addition, if the authority is granted, debate would be very limited, and members of Congress would not be able to amend the agreements; they could only vote yes or no on them.
Bill O’Reilly’s sick pathology: Why his systematic lying is even worse than reported
Fox News' bully may be in hot water for lying about his war correspondence. But his lies go much deeper than thatMuch like suspended NBC anchor Brian Williams, Bill O’Reilly’s war stories are unraveling. His tales of reportorial derring-do – in Argentina, El Salvador, Ferguson, Northern Ireland – are turning out to be stories of derring-didn’t.
O’Reilly addressed the Brian Williams controversy in a February 5 segment for The O’Reilly Factor. “You go on Letterman– I’ve been on there many times– and you want to please. You want to be interesting. You want to be fascinating. You want to be cool…. It is easy for me, but for some people it’s hard,” O’Reilly explained.
“He knows what he did was wrong. A lot of people exaggerate their life experience, and he got caught…. I don’t think Americans care anymore. I think they’re so used to being lied to, they’re so cynical about the media, they don’t trust the media at all,” O’Reilly added.
And O’Reilly should know, because it turns out that he’s among the people who “exaggerate their life experience.” But so far, the reports of O’Reilly’s strained relationship with the truth have neglected a very important point: He doesn’t just lie about his own experiences – he lies about everything. And because “everything” includes important political issues, most of his lies are much more damaging than his claims to have drawn fire in the Falklands. From a myriad of examples, we’ve focused on five instances where O’Reilly’s not just lying, but where he demonstrably knows he’s lying, and doing so to better fit a right-wing slant.
Washington’s Al Qaeda Ally Now Leading ISIS in Libya
March 9, 2015 (Eric Draitser - NEO) - The revelations that US ally Abdelhakim Belhadj is now leading ISIS in Libya should come as no surprise to those who have followed US policy in that country, and throughout the region. It illustrates for the umpteenth time that Washington has provided aid and comfort to precisely those forces it claims to be fighting around the world.
According to recent reports, Abdelhakim Belhadj has now firmly ensconced himself as the organizational commander of the ISIS presence inside Libya. The information comes from an unnamed US intelligence official who has confirmed that Belhadj is supporting and coordinating the efforts of the ISIS training centers in eastern Libya around the city of Derna, an area long known as a hotbed of jihadi militancy.
While it may not seem to be a major story – Al Qaeda terrorist turns ISIS commander – the reality is that since 2011 the US and its NATO allies have held up Belhadj as a “freedom fighter.” They portrayed him as a man who courageously led his fellow freedom-lovers against the “tyrannical despot” Gaddafi whose security forces at one time captured and imprisoned many members of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG), including Belhadj.Belhadj served the US cause in Libya so well that he can be seen receiving accolades from Sen. John McCain who referred to Belhadj and his followers as heroes. He was initially rewarded after the fall of Gaddafi with the post of military commander of Tripoli, though he was forced to give way to a more politically palatable “transitional government” which has since evaporated in that chaotic, war-ravaged country.
Urinal generates power from pee in England
We've covered a lot of different uses for urine in the past. It's a renewable resource that, while disgusting to some, could actually do a lot of good. Pee can be used to boost your compost, it can be recycled to retrieve minerals and it can also be used to generate electricity.
It's that last one that is the focus of a new project by the University of the West of England in Bristol and Oxfam. The partners have built a urinal that produces electricity from pee using a microbial fuel cell. The first prototype has been set up at the university, but the ultimate setting for the technology could be refugee camps where lighting at night could improve the safety of everyone living there.
The creators wanted a way to solve the problem of attacks, particularly on women, in dark refugee camps. The urinals provide both private toilets and a way to generate electricity for lighting around the camps
The microbial fuel cell technology behind the urinal is one we've written about a few times, like in this DIY version and this technology that produces energy from the bacteria present in the soil. In fact, this same research team has already proven that urine can generate enough electricity to power a cell phone.

I'm checking out the FSC email debacle,
which I've discovered has several damaging aspects, now that I've heard 3-4 days of State Dept reporters discuss the ramifications. (Certainly, I don't mean 'Benghazi.')
It is far more complicated than I ever imagined when I began to look into the issue.
Screaming "What about Jeb Bush?," as Lanny Davis is attempting to do (even his corporatist Buddies have shut him down on that one--"apples to oranges"), definitely will not work the way that it did in the 90's, when he was the premier shill for their political machine, and info was not near as readily available to the general public.
They had better get their ducks in a row. I suspect that this is "why" they are keeping their heads down.
Repubs have a relatively new right-wing Republican Representative who chaired the Congressional Committee hearing which helped show one CMS administrator the door [after her debacle of a performance before them].
Hey, the guy may be certifiable, but I sure as heck wouldn't want him to come after me. He's no slob when it comes to effective questioning. Of course, it doesn't hurt that he is a former federal prosecutor.
IOW, it won't be anything like having 'car salesman' Issa go after her.
Numbers of FOIA Requests have been denied (even after law suits were filed) because of the 'sitting on official emails,' etc. Many of which were generated by more left-leaning groups such as the environmental organization, "Friends Of The Earth."
Actually, there are a couple of bloggers at DKos who are pretty well-versed on this topic. So far, at least one of them appears to have pretty much the same information that I've turning up [from my various sources].
Schumer sure skirted the issue, yesterday. Talk about uncomfortable. Remember, this is "Mr Never-Saw-A-Camera-That-He Doesn't-Love," LOL! Clearly, all the corporatist/Establishment Dems are hoping that this will go away.
Almost have to wonder if this is not 'one reason' for the delay in declaring a candidacy. IOW, her Camp may have expected this to come out, eventually.
UL
P.S. I've read that her Camp will try to blame the entire issue on the Administration. Par for the course, huh?
Everyone thinks they have the best dog, and none of them are wrong.
Interesting because Phoebe Loosinhouse has a diary up
over at GOS today on Hillary's baggage. It did not get a lot of traction so I am guessing that the plebes are in bunker mode.
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2015/03/09/1369345/-Baggage-Weight-Exceeds...
I have been predicting that she will implode during the campaign. At the rate her camp is going, her implosion may come before she even announces.
On Phoebe's diary I made several comments, but this series is worth reading because of Phoebe's responses. I invited her here a while back and she said she would check it out. Unfortunately, I never heard more from her. I wish she would come and cross post because I enjoy her writing. This comment of hers is delicious.

I have a healthy respect for her. We agree on many things, not on everything. But, I know that I can always count on her having an interesting and fact/reason-based analysis. We have a very good blogging relationship, as far as I can tell.
Maybe I'll mention to her that we'd love to see her here, and put in a link.
(The truth is, I'll soon be changing off my current blog url from my first blog, to either my 4th or 5th blog url. But, I hope to configure something on MS Notepad that I can copy, so that I can add a second signature line to my comments that will advertise this blog.)
Again, thanks for the heads up.

Lanny Davis. Ugh.
He makes pond scum look like spring water from Lourdes. Since leaving the White House, Davis has represented an all-star cast of sleazebags.
If a second Clinton administration includes the likes of Davis and Paul Begala, we are all well and truly fked.
Someone needs to write a parody
Lanny Davis Eyes
This one isn't making me squirm
as much as some other things.
Someone needs to lay out how former Secretaries of State handled and archived their communication going back to say WJC's first term. And we need to konw how all other cabinet secretaries between 2009-2012 handled and archived thier communication.
The answers from the SoS's will probably vary greatly since how we communicate and how we use the internet has changed so much, but that's part of the issue. It all needs to be put into perspective against precedent and technological changes. I read somewhere that Colin Powell handled his email the same way as Hillary.
We can't hold technology decisions made in 2009 to the same as we would expect in 2015. There's a reason people carry iPhones and Galaxy(s) and not a Blackberry today.
Just my two cents anyway...
"Never separate the life you live from the words you speak." --Paul Wellstone
Correction: It didn't bother me, on the surface. Bear in mind,
there are a lot of very misleading DNC/Dem Party 'talking points' about the technical aspects of this.
That's why I'm checking it out, very thoroughly.
Trust me, when all Lanny Davis can say, is: "What about Jeb Bush?," she's got a very serious problem, if an independent IG, or other serious third party investigation, is launched.
(And according to the Ambassador, it proved baseless that he even used a private email server. He was 'pushing for the policy change,' but claims that he never actually used an outside server. He was interviewed on CNN's "State Of The Nation," yesterday.)
I think that it would be simple for Repubs to shut down her run, if they seriously pursued this debacle.
However, I suspect that they would probably rather just use this against her, and run against a greatly hobbled candidate.
Bear in mind, some Secretary's of State (Condi Rice) NEVER even used emails.
And some regulations/laws have changed. So what one did, did not necessarily apply to all the other SOS's.
Colin Powell stepped down in 2005. There were some changes in regulations, etc., since then.
I've got to check this out further, but she also issued a specific State Department directive on this topic, which many say that she violated.
And, yesterday, various Sunday Talk shows/news outlets played the audio of her accusing members of the Bush Admin for doing the same thing.
Again, it will take months and months (maybe throughout the primary season) for the 55,000 emails that she's already submitted, to be vetted and redacted. So, even if nothing else comes to light, this story is ongoing.
And the Chairman/Representative that I mentioned above, issued, or re-issued, a subpoena last week, so that supposedly, it will be a crime if she knowingly withholds any documents (emails) pursuant to this subpoena.
I expect them to demand the server be surrendered to a third party for examination. She can try to fight it, but IMHO, it would only hurt her.
Later, I'll expound on another bit of info that her Camp has decided to 'hide.'
So far, the only Dem defense is: "Nothing here to see, move on."
Or,
And when that doesn't work: "What about Jeb's emails."
Which is a total "apples to oranges" comparison.
(Not to say that the charge, if in violation of Florida laws or regulations, could not be a stand-alone issue. But to try to make a legal comparison in this instance, is beyond absurd.)
UL
Everyone thinks they have the best dog, and none of them are wrong.
Sending Lanny Davis
out to say anything proves she's learned nothing in all these years.
I think this story is managable if they do it correctly. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem they have a clue. As always, tone deaf.
For the record, I'm no HRC fan. I did not support her in '08 and can not bring myself to vote for her now either.
"Never separate the life you live from the words you speak." --Paul Wellstone
If you read my linked comment
it puts a political (not legal) perspective of why this could be so bad. It is not so much what is real, but what is going to be marketed by the opposition. Quite honestly, with the front runners that we are told will be our candidates, I certainly do not have a dog in this hunt.

HRC is so tone deaf
Every time she opens her mouth she makes a situation worse. "When I said we were dead broke, it was technically true but inartful."
"Never separate the life you live from the words you speak." --Paul Wellstone
Well,
respectfully, I have to disagree, in that I thought that it was far worse than inartful.
I cannot believe that the Clintons were ever literally financially destitute.
And, I can only imagine that her flippant and callous remarks would really have stung the thousands of clients that I've advocated for in over three decades. Not to mention tens of millions of other Americans who have lived on the edge for years, and who are/have been 'literally' dead broke.
Maybe it is because I have seen so much suffering amongst people who did not deserve their unfortunate lot in life. But, I just can't imagine her (or any politician) uttering such insensitive words.
UL
Everyone thinks they have the best dog, and none of them are wrong.
I agree with you
That's a quote from Hillary. When asked several days later if she regretted making the dead broke comment, she replied as above. "Inartful" was her characterization of "dead broke."
My point is that she doesn't get it and can't ever stop trying to find weasle words to further qualify things. This is her MO. And people are on to her. The more HRC opens her mouth the more she is going to turn voters off.
Instead of announcing her candidacy in April, she ought to wait until the of September. The less people hear her parce everything the better off she'd be.
Of course, whenever she declares it'll make no difference to me. I have no use for her.
"Never separate the life you live from the words you speak." --Paul Wellstone
Hey, couldn't agree more, CL! You know,
I think that she is just very 'typical' of the One Percenters.
It certainly seems that many (if not all) of them, have a very huge sense of entitlement--not to mention, an air of great superiority.
And, yes--the less that I hear from her, or her minions, the better.
If they can't figure out that the likes of Lanny Davis does more harm than good, they really are in a world of hurt.
One last thought on this, and I'll give it a rest for a few days--I truly believe that the Clintons and their Camp still don't understand that this is NOT the 90s.
IOW, there is such a thing as social media, and 'the Internets.'
And, because of this, they will be held accountable for their actions--and swiftly.
I truly don't believe that they grasp this concept.
UL
Everyone thinks they have the best dog, and none of them are wrong.
Thanks. I had not, 'cause I was going to right before I
went to her diary.
From what many of the State Dept reporters are saying, at the least, the law/regulations are 'murky,' and even somewhat contradictory. That's a given.
Yesterday, none other than Rep Issa said on CNN:
State Dept reporters say that until we see the State Dept legal briefs--regarding her 'authority' to use a private server--we won't fully know the legality of what she did. And they may, or may not, be forthcoming.
Mostly, the requirement to preserve an email "is a requirement and an expectation to preserve in government hands, not in your own hands."
I think that this does nail 'the spirit of the law,' as I've read it.
Clearly, for many partisans, anything she says will either be sufficient or insufficient, depending upon their partisan leanings.
I am earnestly trying to base my judgment on the actual written documents/regulations, numerous interviews with reporters (especially those who regularly report on the State Dept, etc.).
[Of course, I personally don't trust either Party on most matters. Both sides will have to conclusively prove their stances, or I'll continue to push for answers.]
But you're right, Nancy, about 'perceptions.'
And, I doubt seriously that a hundred press conferences will change perceptions with much of the American Public.
Again, IMO, she has got to turn over her server/computer hard drive, etc., if she has any hope of beating this perception that she is 'hiding something.'
And this is partly true because of the decades-old perceptions of their arrogance and downright dishonesty.
But I can't imagine that she'll do this, unless she is totally backed into a corner.
UL
Everyone thinks they have the best dog, and none of them are wrong.
IMHO,
if Hillary, the inevitable, had been articulating substantive policies already, this may have not had the potential to be damaging. But she has sat back cloistered somewhere with her 200 advisors instead. It has left a vacuum and everyone knows that news hates a vacuum. So bad news fills that vacuum. If she had been talking substance before this came out, then she could have easily pivoted the topic back to her policy stances. This campaign is already gotten off to a bad start and the inevitability is starting to look shaky. Like I said, I do not have a dog in this hunt although our two springers are "hunting" dogs. LOL
Do I hear the sound of guillotines being constructed?
“Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable." ~ President John F. Kennedy
Your point is well taken,
I agree that the vacuum has worsened the situation.
All the talking heads (both legacy Parties) agree that she'll take a temporary hit of somewhere between 15-25 points in polls once she announces.
Which is one reason that I suspect she has postponed announcing. That, and trying to avoid becoming a target.
BTW, Schumer tried to do just what you're suggesting, yesterday--pivot to policies.
In the end, though, it is difficult to put the genie back in the bottle.
Now, if she were actually to come out with some wonderfully populist economic policy stances, I might think that it is still possible.
But from all that I've read, she is more concerned about offending Wall Street, than she is taking care of Main Street.
But maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.
I hope so.

Finally got over there, Nancy, and
left 4 to 6 brief comments.
Didn't go on a complete screed like I did here (apologize if I've gone a bit overboard), but I did touch on the fact that there is some substance to notion that her use of a private server is controversial, and possibly not in keeping with the 'spirit' (if not the letter) of the law according to State Dept reporters.
IOW, it's not just a "PR" matter, or lack of a quick response team.
I'd appreciate it if any of you Guys see a really good diarist like Phoebe writing on this topic, would please consider making mention of it, over here.
Thanks.
