Democrats have talked themselves into being Trump's biggest supporters
It's not surprising that the news media loved Trump's new pointless war against the Syrian government.
MSNBC’s Brian Williams hailed video of the strikes as “beautiful,” and CNN’s Fareed Zakaria identified this as the moment when Trump became president.
What is surprising is who has become Trump's supporters, and who hasn't. Consider Democrats.
Schumer, the Senate Minority Leader, said on Thursday night that “making sure Assad knows that when he commits such despicable atrocities he will pay a price is the right thing to do,” while House Minority Leader Pelosi said the strike appeared “to be a proportional response” to the chemical weapons attack.
Senator Elizabeth Warren said the “Syrian regime must be held accountable,” while Senator Mark Warner said that Assad “could not go unpunished,” and Senator Dick Durbin called it a “measured response.
... Hillary Clinton, who was criticized by the party’s left flank during the presidential election for a tendency to be overly supportive of military action, even said earlier in the day on Thursday that the United States should “take out” Assad’s airfields.
Senator Sheldon Whitehouse said “last night’s military action in Syria met my standards for responding to atrocity: a limited action; with a clear objective.” And Florida Senator Bill Nelson offered unqualified praise on Thursday evening, saying in a tweet that he hopes it will teach “Assad not to use chemical weapons again.”
Nearly half of Senate Democrats have come out publically endorsing Trump.
So obviously the Democratic politicians are now on board with supporting Trump, but it extends beyond that.
Over on TOP, where hating Trump is a full-time occupation, this is a good example of the reaction: Trump Probably Did The Right Thing in Syria. So Why Does It Feel So Ominous?
I'll give Rob credit for realizing that something is wrong here, while still being too dim to figure it out. He's still smarter than 90% of TOP.
Meanwhile, consider who aren't fans of this new war: Trump voters.
“What Trump did was nothing less than a betrayal, a betrayal of his supporters, of his message ‘America First!,’ of his promise to be different—to learn from the mistakes of the past and chart a new course,” said Richard Spencer, the alt-right leader who takes credit for coining the term. “I'll wait and see, of course, but I'm not sure I can continue to support him. Most all of the alt-right feels the same way.”..
Cernovich, who claimed this week that the chemical attack was carried out by “deep state agents,” told me he still supports Trump.
“If Hillary had been elected I wouldn't even bother speaking out, as war would be certain,” Cernovich said in an email. “I'm still a Trump supporter, as last night's air strikes appeared to have been limited. I do not and will not support another war in the Middle East.”
Chalk this one up as something I'd never thought I'd see in my life: right-wing nuts making sense on foreign policy, while so-called liberals lusting for blood behind a president that was supposed to represent everything bad.
How did we get to this point?
Glenn Greenwald points out how this is yet another self-inflicted wound by the Democrats.
Democrats have spent months wrapping themselves in extremely nationalistic and militaristic rhetoric. They have constantly accused Trump of being a traitor to the U.S., a puppet of Putin, and unwilling to defend U.S. interests. They have specifically tried to exploit Assad’s crimes by tying the Syrian leader to Trump, insisting that Trump would never confront Assad because doing so would anger his Kremlin masters. They have embraced a framework whereby anyone who refuses to confront Putin or Assad is deemed a sympathizer of, or a servant to, foreign enemies.
Having pushed those tactics and themes, Democrats have painted themselves into a corner. How could they possibly do anything but cheer as Trump bombs Syria? They can’t. And cheering is thus exactly what they’re doing...
Much as George H.W. Bush was motivated to shed his “wimp” image by invading Panama, of course Trump will be motivated to prove he’s not controlled by Putin via blackmail by seeking confrontation with the Russian leader. And that’s exactly what he just did. War is the classic weapon U.S. Presidents use to show they are strong, patriotic and deserving of respect; the more those attributes are called in question, the greater that compulsion becomes:
This is a war that Democrats cheered for, argued for, chanted for, and most of all dared Trump for.
Trump pulled the trigger, but Democrats put the gun in his hand.
Greenwald then goes on to point out the implications.
Democratic Party leaders have explicitly praised Trump’s bombing. They will have to continue to do so even if Trump expands this war. That’s what the Democratic Party has turned itself into to; indeed, it’s what it has been for a long time...
Those who instantly fall in line behind Trump as he bombs people are ensuring that he will keep doing it. As the instantly popular post-9/11 George W. Bush showed, those praising Trump for bombing Syria are also building him up in general so that he becomes stronger with everything else he wants to do.
The Hillary supporters, the ones who hated Trump the most, have now talked themselves into a position of having to support Trump every time he drops a bomb. They are in the position of making Trump politically stronger, while making the Democrats weaker.
Trump has a way to muzzle their attacks whenever he chooses. All it requires is killing foreigners.
Perhaps the most bizarre aspect of the last 24 hours has been watching those who have vilified Trump as an Evil Fascist and Bumbling Clown and Unstable Sociopath suddenly decide that they want him to bomb Syria. Even if you’re someone who in the abstract wanted the U.S. to attack Assad, shouldn’t your view that Trump is a completely unstable and incompetent monster prevent you from endorsing this war, with Trump as the Commander-in-Chief?
What happened to all the warnings about Trump’s towering incompetence and core evil? Where are all the grave predictions that he’s leading the world on a path of authoritarianism, fascism and blood and soil nationalism? They all gave way to War Fever
Guest after guest is gushing. From MSNBC to CNN, Trump is receiving his best night of press so far. And all he had to do was start a war.

Don't let your congressman off the hook, either he wants to nuke all these fuckers or he's a god damn communist. I demand my congressman vote for a surprise FIRST STRIKE against N.Korea, Russia, Iran and Syria!! Let's go USA!!! I give up! GO WAR NEOCONS!!! WE ARE THE FUCKIN' NAZIS!

It would be hilarious if it wasn't
so fucking tragic. Well I knew the dem party and it's supporters, like those on Daily Kos, COULD NOT be part of an antiwar movement because everything Trump would do was what Obama was doing or trying to do. They did paint themselves into a corner, a very hypocritical corner.
So now we find out who really is antiwar, anti-imperialism.
The right wing might not like it, but they'll still support Trump, like the left wing supported Obama. Like trained monkeys. "Support your party, support your politicians, don't think for yourselves you idiots!"
This is really bad. I'm seeing a lot of people that know the deal though, whether that's more than usual when it comes to U.S. wars or not I don't know. The way the corporate media is handling it and the comments I've seen on some mainstream news sites indicate a lot of people who are swallowing the propaganda hook, line and sinker. Even most of those who don't favor military strikes aren't saying it because the U.S. is the real criminal factor in this but because it's not their concern to "save" Syria and the Syrian people.
This really is an information war.

Meanwhile over on TOP: Ya'll realize that Donnie gutted his Alt-Right base last night, right?
This is a 2 + 2 = 5 moment.
Liberals on TOP are celebrating that Trump pissed off his base because they don't want another war, while endorsing Trump's useless war and abandoning their core values to do it, while still hating Trump.
I'm unable to accomplish this doublethink.
Clearly if Trump voters are mad at Trump...
Which means that everything that happened is because those whiny crybabies couldn't get over emails.

It isn't just the Dems that are on the verge of civil war. The Repubs are too.
The only thing that's kept the Repubs together is election victories.
I think the next financial bubble to burst (and it's very, very close) will be enough to trigger one or both parties to melt down.

Look on the bright side!
No one can accuse Democrats of rigidity! They are as flexible as gold medaling Olympic gymnasts. That has to count for something, right?
We hate money in politics! Damn those money-raising, big bucks donating Republicans!
Of course, Obama had to raise .75 billion, even though McCain went forward under McCain Feingold because...talk radio? And who says Goldman Sachs must expect something from the Clintons besides speeches for all that money? A speech in Hillary's dulcet tones is worth every penny they paid her. I'm sure we'd see all that and more if she releases the transcripts. And the onliest reason she isn't releasing them is that Sanders and Trump aren't releasing their tax returns. After all it's only her against them. The American people don't have any stake in any of that whatever.
We hate the Iraq War! And we hate Bush for lying America into it. Who did he think he was fooling, anyway? Thank heaven Obama will end it.
Er... thank heaven that Obama will extend the SOFA deadline that Bush negotiated before leaving office! And who can possibly blame poor attorney Hillary for not seeing through Bush, like most of the left in America did. And that surge in Afghanistan was icing on the cake.
In fact, we hate Bush and his drone killings and his Middle East wars.
Poor Obama had to up drone killings by multiples of Bush and did not even get to give medals to drone operators as he wanted. It's a shame the left just doesn't have his back. And thank heaven Hillary is supporting
Not My PresidentPresident Trump in his attack on Syria in violation of the War Powers clause of the Constitution of the United States. We hate torture! Damn that Bushco to hell, anyway.
Well, of course Obama couldn't close GITMO because Congress. The CIC is powerless in that, right? And, sure there are still black holes like Bagram and we still engage in extraordinary extradition to places like Syria, but that's it! Only the tip, I swear! Besides, it's highly debatable whether making a transgender woman remain naked and blanket-less (and cold) would violate the UN Convention Against Convention Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment if she weren't an American citizen, isn't it? (I'm keeping an open mind about Trump's torture policies until Hillary says something on that topic.)
See? Flexible. They can twist themselves into pretzels at the drop of an administration. Their only North Star is a (D) after someone's name. And no one would ever accuse them of being (gasp) principled, much less pure.
P.S. Leave us not forget that
"MSNBC's Brian Williams" got to be MSNBC's Brian Williams instead of NBC's Brian Williams.
Because, apparently, paying him millions a year at MSNBC instead of the same amount at NBC somehow fixes his having turned the NBC nightly news into a one-man improv show letting his audience in on the joke.
I dunno why I bother...
I just sent this to my "liberal" and spineless Dem Senator

Either WTF or OMG
In response to the diary you linked to on DK.
I think I'm going with WTF!
The US is a force of good in the Middle East except for Iraq ?
So basically the author is saying that what this country did to Libya was a good thing? Or it was great that Obama using drones in 7-8 countries that had nothing to do with 9/11 was a good thing?
Or any of the other things this country did to the Middle East when Obama was president.
As for the horrific crimes against humanity that this author unequivocally states was done by Assad that needed to be responded to. I guess that all the hundreds of thousands of civilians killed by this country aren't considered horrific crimes against humanity because they were done by this country.
Does he agree with Albright that it was worth it to kill 500,000 Iraqi children due to the sanctions that Clinton put on Iraq?
And that destroying Libya was another good thing done by this country because Gaddafi is dead?
I wonder how he feels about our complicity in the genocide that we are helping the Saudis commit in Yemen.
And more WTF from the author.
Oh hell yes, getting bipartisan support from Schumer, McCain and Graham is without a doubt a good thing that came from Trump bombing the Syrian Air Force base.
At least he's getting some flack in the few comments on this POS diary.
Now excuse me while I go throw up.

This is coming from the same school
This is coming from the same school that is nostalgic for the Dubya presidency because he criticized Trump.
...but then supports Trump in war.
And why does he support this war? He never mentions the actual merits of the war, or what we hope to accomplish. Nope. It's about a) signaling his virtue, and b) promoting Team Blue.
And c) attacking Bannon
or whatever the hell he is trying to say. Have to admit that I had a hard time following him.
I forgot to address this part of his diary.
We know that Brock spent a million on Hillary's bot army to launder its memes/disinformation through left wing blogs such as Daily Kos and that Hillary was clearly unhappy that a no fly zone wasn't created over Syria in order to protect their moderate rebels
(Al Qaida and its offshoots)
I can't make sense rest of what he wrote. I had a hard time following him anyway.
And yes they do seem to be nostalgic for Bush. He danced on the Ellen show and got a hug from Michelle who is always so gracious.

I know what you mean by trying to not work yourself up
with everything that's going on today after last nights bombings. I too was just going to read stuff and not comment today, but that went out the window when I read that diary.
And I recently read that the election of Trump has been a financial windfall for the democrats. If people are dumb enough to give them their money and thinking that they are going to fix anything or fight back against Trump and the republicans, then they are deceiving themselves. Pelosi already told us that she doesn't think that the DP needs to change anything.

I can't cite specific diaries
I can't cite specific diaries, but this outcome was discussed here multiple times, that Drumpf would be pushed in whatever ways necessary to get him to do the neocons' and neoliberals' bidding to get 'em that NEW war they're all pining for like the f'd up psychopaths they apparently all are. When I read Greenwald's article today I nearly screamed out loud at the horror of it all. The world has indeed turned upside down even more than it did during the election. All my naïve beliefs growing up and on into adulthood about the U.S. keep getting re-destroyed.
My first taste was from being a double-major in English Literature and, more to the point, Spanish, as an undergraduate. Taking poetry classes in the Spanish language taught by professors from different Central and South American countries featuring poets from those countries many of whom used imagery of a death-eagle with bloody talons to describe this country shocked me, but somehow I continued to believe that this was all the doing of conservatives / Republicans.
Now I know that isn't true and that Mammon is the only true god of the leaders of this place no matter whether they wear a pachyderm or a jack-ass pin on their label next to the felon-striped American flag one. I watched in confusion and then growing disillusionment as Obama broke so many promises, many related to foreign policy, but still he held back from directly inciting a world war. So, thanks, I guess. Meanwhile, we won't get the truth about this specific event from these excuses for human beings any more than we have about anything else war and money-munitions related. At the next Olympics, instead of chanting "U-S-A! U-S-A!", we really should all just start yelling "Ka-CHING! Ka-CHING! Bombs for everybody!" It's our real national motto after all.
I'm nauseated by all this death-dealing and charnel house hypocrisy. Please let there be some sane force / nation or nations out there that will hold us back enough to prevent the worst. I'm not confident, but I have to cling to hope.
We all were exposed to propaganda from the moment
we started school and even before then. I don't know how old you are, but I grew up playing cowboys and Indians thinking that if I was the cowboy and killed the Indians then I was the good guy because the Indians just slaughtered everyone they saw and the cowboys saved us from them.
Then we pledged allegiance to the flag, celebrated Columbus because he discovered this wonderful country but we were never told the truth about what he did to the Natives. Look at how long it has taken for people to try to change Columbus Day to something else because we finally found out what he did.
Even after Obama broke so many of his campaign promises, and continued to do everything that Bush did, so many people still were supportive of the DP until Bernie came along and told us the truth about them.
You are right that Obama did what he could to keep large numbers of troops out of Iraq and especially Syria. The pentagon, the CIA, the republicans and even some members of his party wanted him to put troops in Syria. I'm not excusing what he did do, but he was under a lot of pressure to expand the wars with more troops.
I too try to cling to some hope that some day there will be something done to our government and this madness will stop. But I don't think it's going to be in my lifetime.

I'm dense,I know (hence the Hohenzollern avatar)
but, why is it that kids killed by Assad is a war crime (genocide???), but the four children just offed by Trump (via Raytheon) is just fine and dandy? How does Trump compute that?
Seems to me that the partisan residents of the Duopoly (formerly the United States of America) have suffered some collateral damage when it comes to thought processes.
Gëzuar!!
from a reasonably stable genius.
American exceptionalism, remember?
Trump killed over 200 people in Mosul after the military watched as ISIS herded civilians into a building and destroyed anyway. And how many hospitals has this country bombed, but the only bombings of hospitals we hear about is when it's Russia or the Syrians doing it.
Scientists are concerned that conspiracy theories may die out if they keep coming true at the current alarming rate.
@Bollox Ref My understanding, is
The D party has always been . . .
. . . and will always be the party of Scoop Jackson, the legendary "Senator from Boeing."
No Eugene McCarthys, no George McGoverns, and no peace marchers are ever going to change that. Both parties are private clubs; they don't have to be "fair" or "representative," and no court can force them to be so. Attempting to use either of them to change the system is a waste of time and effort.
The great divide is not between D's and R's -- it's between small-r republicans and imperialists; between those who would end the empire to save the republic, and those who would end the republic to save the empire. The elites of both parties and the mass media are totally controlled by imperialist money; most ordinary people are bamboozled by the media, but beginning to ask, "What's in this empire deal for me, my kids, and their kids?"
