Fire, Ready, Aim! - Trump Launches Missile Attack on Syria

Before there is conclusive evidence of who is responsible for the recent chemical weapons attack in Idlib Province, Syria - Trump has launched a missile attack in retaliation.

U.S. Launches Missiles at Syrian Base After Chemical Weapons Attack

The United States launched dozens of cruise missiles Thursday night at a Syrian airfield in response to what it believes was the Syrian government's use of banned chemical weapons blamed for having killed at least 100 people on Tuesday, U.S. military officials told NBC News.

Two U.S. warships in the Mediterranean Sea fired at least 50 Tomahawk missiles intended for a single target — Ash Sha'irat in Homs province in western Syria, the officials said. That's the airfield from which the United States believes the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad fired the banned weapons.

There was no immediate word on casualties. U.S. officials told NBC News that people were not targeted and that aircraft and infrastructure at the site, including the runway, were hit.

While their spin doctors will try to make it seem like every single one of them is both for it AND against it, depending on whether you are a voter or a campaign contributor.

I've already heard that Hillary endorsed it and said that we MUST take out the airfields, while simultaneously it's all Trump's fault for acting without waiting for the evidence.

They ALL wanted the war, and any disagreements are solely on how it affects the polls in areas that might shift a few points. Right now the tea leaves say WAR will get an approval boost to both sides, provided they spin it as "Decisive Leader" and "Outraged Justified Resistance, But Willing to Work with The other Side."

i saw this before the attack:

Hillary Clinton calls for destruction of Syrian Air Force

Hillary Clinton, despite losing the 2016 US Presidential Election, has continued on her war monger, calling for her country to destroy Syria’s air force, days after a chemical attack killed over 50 people, in which the US has blamed the Syrian government without providing sufficient evidence.

“Assad has an air force, and that air force is the cause of most of these civilian deaths as we have seen over the years and as we saw again in the last few days,” Clinton said in a speech at the “Women in the World” summit in New York City. “And I really believe that we should have and still should take out his air fields and prevent him from being able to use them to bomb innocent people and drop sarin gas on them.”

“I still believe we should have done a no-fly zone,” she said, in a slight knock against former President Barack Obama, whose Cabinet she served in. “We should have been more willing to confront Assad.”

Thanks for the link. It seems clear that the strike was not intended to decimate the air base, but was probably rather carried out for domestic political reasons.

I think Trump was ultimately maneuvered into authorizing this strike to ward off loud criticism from Congress (especially Republicans like McCain and Lindsey Graham but also Dems like Hillary), that we should 'do something' about the alleged atrocity. Giving the Russians a heads up on the attack makes that clear.

The idiocy in Washington knows no bounds...

thousands of people in Yemen with the help from this country.
The Saudis dropped a US made bomb on a funeral that killed over 800 civilians and minutes later dropped another one.
The U.N says that up to 10,000 people have been killed since the Saudis started the bombing campaign and the blockade of US ships are not allowing food, medicine and other items into Yemen and up to 50,000 people including children are at risk of starvation.
So where is the outrage from the world community for those people, especially the children?
And where was the outrage when this country killed 30 civilians in Yemen including a pregnant woman, women and children ?
Or the outrage when this country killed over 200 people in Mosul after the military watched as ISIS hoarded civilians into a building and bombed it anyway?

Syria has an air force, and something to do with air was involved. Ergo, get 'im.

Trump earlier today was obviously being told he needed to take out Assad, facts be damned.

https://www.bloomberg.com/politics/articles/2017-04-06/trump-under-press...

The Pentagon is actively developing military options for Syria, according to a U.S. official who requested anonymity to discuss internal deliberations. The U.S. could use standoff weapons, such as Tomahawk cruise missiles, to target Syrian military sites, another U.S. official said.

Referring to the attack and Assad’s role, Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on Thursday that “what happened in Syria is a disgrace to humanity. And he’s there, and I guess he’s running things. So something should happen.”

Not only is it blatantly illegal for the U.S. to do this no matter what happened, it is so obviously based on lies it's almost maddening to think people are buying and/or supporting this. This all was obviously a pre-planned move by the Trump admin, along with the CIA, for an excuse to go after Syria and pressure Russia.

Here's Haley,
"Russia cannot escape responsibility for this," Haley said at the United Nations. "They chose to close their eyes to the barbarity. They defied the conscience of the world."

@Big Al Who are you talking about buying it? is there data on what the people of the United States think of this? Or are you responding to the unanimity coming down from above, from all the "leaders?"

Of course they're unanimous in support of this; the only people that might have opposed it were Trump and Republicans like Rand Paul and Justin Amash. The Bush Republicans and Clinton Democrats (which is all the Democrats except Tulsi Gabbard, basically) all supported it from the beginning. As did the Pentagon, the CIA, and the mass media.

And I just checked, and Rand Paul has this to say:

http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/327736-rand-paul-trump-...

Admittedly, his main problem with the strike is that Trump needed Congress' approval first, a point of view apparently shared by the likes of Tim Kaine, rather than the fact that it's wrong, but he does at least mention the fact that neither the United States nor its people were attacked.

Among the Dems, I've not seen anyone other than Gabbard (yet) who opposes this move on its merits. And even Gabbard says that Assad should be executed if it turns out he's actually to blame--she just wants solid evidence that he is. She's talking in the language of crime, trial, prosecution, as if Assad could/should be brought to the Hague to stand trial, and then get executed if he's found guilty. Silly Tulsi, so quaint and old-fashioned. We don't need no stinkin' trials.

Trump warns that by attacking Assad, US will ‘end up fighting Russia’
Published time: 12 Nov, 2016

US President-elect Donald Trump has confirmed that he will most likely abandon the Obama administration policy on Syria to seek a possible rapprochement with Russia on the issue of Assad.

“I’ve had an opposite view of many people regarding Syria,” the 70-year-old Republican told the Wall Street Journal in his first interview since the election.
...
Trump, on the other hand, said on Friday that the US should be focused on fighting Islamic State, instead of pursuing regime change in Syria.

“My attitude was you’re fighting Syria, Syria is fighting ISIS, and you have to get rid of ISIS. Russia is now totally aligned with Syria, and now you have Iran, which is becoming powerful, because of us, is aligned with Syria... Now we’re backing rebels against Syria, and we have no idea who these people are.”

It has been widely documented and reported that American weapons supplied to the moderate rebels are often obtained by extremists in Syria. Those weapons, in turn, are being used by the jihadists to strike civilian positions and deploy them against Syrian forces.

The president-elect warned that if the US attacks Assad, “we end up fighting Russia, fighting Syria.”

But not one word about the fact if Obama hadn't started the war in Syria then none of this giant clusterfuck wouldn't be happening.
This is a good article about the Empire under Obama and the amnesia of the last 8 years when the left went silent while he continued the Bush wars and furthered PNAC's goals in the Middle East.

Those hoping to see an end to the "war on terror" launched by the Bush administration got, instead, the very opposite.

While Obama dramatically reduced the number of ground troops in Afghanistan and Iraq, U.S. soldiers continue to carry out military operations in both countries. The shift that Obama oversaw in U.S. strategy involved a reliance on covert operations, Cruise missile strikes and drone warfare, instead of ground invasions.

In particular, Obama massively escalated the drone war in Pakistan, Somalia and Yemen, killing more people with drones in his first year in office than Bush did in his entire presidency.

With this approach, Obama expanded the scope of the "war on terror" to a dizzying scale, with U.S. Special Forces carrying out missions in 150 countries between 2012 and 2014 alone.

Obama also launched major military operations in Libya in 2011 and Syria in 2014, bringing the number of countries where the U.S. carried out large-scale bombings under Obama to seven. In Obama's last year in office, the U.S. dropped 26,172 bombs in these countries.

https://socialistworker.org/2017/01/27/against-amnesia-the-empire-under-...

I'm sure that if I dropped this article on DK I would be attacked as a racist, Obama hating, purest leftist and what Trump is doing has no bearing on what Obama did.
Except for the fact that he started the war in Syria. I better not mention Libya or any of the other countries he used drones in.

How might Nixon’s ‘madman theory’ apply to Trump?

In 1987, Politico reported this week, former president Richard Nixon wrote a brief letter to future president Donald Trump. “Mrs. Nixon told me that you were great on the Donahue Show,” Nixon wrote. “As you can imagine, she is an expert on politics and she predicts that whenever you decide to run for office you will be a winner!” The letter will be displayed in the Oval Office.

I am not aware that Trump’s interest in Nixon extends beyond this letter, and in any case comparisons between the 45th and 37th presidents wouldn’t seem to go far beyond a couple of general tendencies: Trump’s hatred for the Washington press corps strikes one as Nixonian, and of course neither man will be remembered for ideological consistency.

The two men’s styles may converge at one significant point, however, on the matter of foreign relations. Like Trump, Nixon was concerned to keep his adversaries guessing about his motives and temperament. Nixon never wanted the Soviets to feel confident that they knew what he would do, or that he wouldn’t do something outrageous or irrational. His famous term for this tactic, recalled by H.R. Haldeman in his posthumously published diary, was the “madman theory.” Nixon wanted the North Vietnamese, with whom the United States was negotiating a peace agreement, to feel a sense of apprehension about what the president might do if pushed to the brink.

Now all the Hillary camp has to do is impeach him and the crown is hers.

@gjohnsit I fully expect very soon a blizzard of videos, press releases, etc. from ISIS and Al Queda showing more bombed out hospitals than in the entire Middle East and child victims. With of course, the calls to action. if more attacks happen, I would then say the goal is regime change. Which in turn will mean that with a bombed out military, the Syrian state will be captured by Al Queda or ISIS. And then the US neocons will get their wish: a Sunni army sitting between Iran and Israel (the Shia crescent). And of course the world gets a nation controlled by religious fanatics and butchers.

Russia is not going to be impressed by this attempt to divert American attention from Russian connections with the Trump cabal.

After being shown a video of Hillary calling for air strikes against Syrian airfields,

Thanks very much. Maybe for once Trump is taking advice from a seasoned professional who bases her recommendations on deep understanding and well-considered analysis.

Can't help myself, the insanity is too fun to watch

You could argue that maybe she wouldn't have been dumb enough to give Assad assurances last week, emboldening him.

But yes, if this is what it seems to be, a targeted strike aimed at screwing up Assad’s chemical weapons capability, Clinton would have absolutely done this sort of thing. It’s the kind of action that has picked up Democratic support in the past.

Yep, I believe that is a true statement since I didn't see anyone upset with Barack for starting the whole clusterfuck.
As expected the first person who doesn't think this is a good idea got jumped on.

I can already smell the cognitive dissonance from Democrats. They’ve spent months rattling sabers, flinging accusations of “acts of war” against Russia, making excuses for Hillary Clinton’s hawkishness on Syria, accusing Trump of coddling dictators and letting Putin’s ally Assad run amok, etc. Now Trump gives us the military action against Assad that Hillary Clinton promised as a candidate and called for again just a few hours ago. Democratic Party loyalists will have a jumble of conflicting thoughts to sort out.
But war in Syria is an easy question for those of us who are consistently anti-war. We will oppose it.

Why exactly are you here? Your sole purpose seems to be to attack Democrats, no matter the subject.

You're still here bashing democrats?
This site is obviously not for you.
You add add nothing to the conversation besides attempting to derail and threadjack it.

@snoopydawg Party faithful.

The main reason I left, any thought of ever supporting the DP or their associated candidates again.

@snoopydawg This was not on TOP but another forum I was watching. Many democrats are having a hard time dealing with the implication that Trump is not Putin's stooge given that Trump bombed a Putin client. To not let go of the Trump/Putin meme, many came to the conclusion that Putin gave Trump permission to bomb Syria.

@Azazello
Why did the US rush this attack without waiting for proof? That's what you do with a false flag event, take advantage of the situation before anyone can doubt the truth of the claimed event. I want to see lab tests, autopsies and shell fragments traceable to the Syrian airforce. Why not make sure that you are right before destroying people and property. The airfield can be made usable within hours of an attack with bulldozers. Russia could replace any equipment lost within days. Russia could stop all cooperation with the US in Syria, or anywhere else, against terrorism. Tillerson then spoke of an ominous threat to remove Assad. Are we looking at the beginning of another ME mass slaughter, another state in total chaos? Does the Deep State have a death wish for all of us?
It's morning in Moscow and the Kremlin is formulating a response. It can't be good.

@Azazello
so why would Assad risk gassing his people right before they did their inspections?
And now just before there is a meeting about how to stop the war, why would he risk doing that again?
The White Helmets have been shown that they are being paid by our government and our allies.
Exactly Jimmy, "what the Fuck is wrong with you " and this goes for everyone who calls themselves democrats,
It's wrong for Trump to do this, but it would have been okay for Hillary to do it because she would have thought about it more than he did and she would have been the most experienced president EVAH!
Good take down by Jimmy, thanks for posting this.

@Azazello is "powerful" testimony.

You know, like Nayirah's testimony to Congress about Iraqi soldiers murdering babies in incubators:

Except it was later discovered that she was the daughter of the Kuwaiti ambassador to the U.S., and her "testimony" was written by a Kuwaiti P.R. firm.

Russia condemns U.S. missile strike on Syria

THE U.S. AIR STRIKE IN SYRIA: FIRST THOUGHTS - By The New Yorker 12:13 A.M.

Coverage in German public mainstream media this morning (a good hour ago German time) with google translation excerpts:
US-Angriff auf Luftwaffenbasis
Putin sieht Beziehung zu USA gefährdet - Stand: 07.04.2017 08:41 Uhr

Russian President Putin spoke of an "aggression against a sovereign nation" with regard to the US offensive. The air raids violated international law and were a serious obstacle to the formation of an international coalition in the fight against terrorism. The head of the Defense Committee in the Russian Parliament, Viktor Oserov, told the RIA Agency, Russia urged an emergency session of the UN Security Council.

Support for the attack was given to the US government by, among others, the UK, France and Saudi Arabia. A spokesman for the British Prime Minister, Theresa May, said the action was an appropriate response to the "barbaric chemical weapons attack" of the Syrian government.

France's foreign minister Jean-Marc Ayrault called the attack a warning to a "criminal regime". The future of Syria is not connected with President Bashar al-Assad. The Americans started to clear their position.

Saudi Arabia: "Bold decision"

Saudi Arabia spoke of a "courageous decision trumps". Saudi Arabia has assured the US full support, the Foreign Ministry said.

The Syrian opposition also welcomed the attack on a Syrian air base. She hopes that the US offensive will be continued to stop the Syrian air raids and the "use of internationally ostracized weapons," says a spokesman for the Syrian National Coalition.

Consent also of Democrats

Trump received US-wide approval from the US Congress. It is right to make clear to the Syrian leader Assad "that he pays a price for committing such abominable abominations," Chuck Schumer, chairman of the democratic minority in the Senate, declared.

The representative of the House of Representatives, Republican Paul Ryan, called the procedure "appropriate and correct". The air raids on the Al-Shairat base in Homs province made it clear that "the Assad regime can no longer count on the inactivity of the US if it commits atrocities against Syrian citizens." "

Sharp criticism of the attack came from Iran, reported the news agency Insa, citing a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry. Such attacks would strengthen terrorists in Syria and make the situation in the civil war country and the region more difficult.

Schumer, Pelosi among Democrats to react to Syria strike
By Alyssa Madruga Published April 07, 2017

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said in a statement that, "making sure Assad knows that when he commits such despicable atrocities he will pay a price is the right thing to do."

"It is incumbent on the Trump administration to come up with a strategy and consult with Congress before implementing it. I salute the professionalism and skill of our Armed Forces who took action today," Schumer added.

I don't know from which source "Die Zeit" came up with "abominable abominations?" Ah, it may be just the stupid google translation I should have checked. Jeez.

Your question is exactly why I post this here, because I am not that good in finding the source quotes. Thank You.

Sure seems like Trump was "captured" by deep state early on, right about when he said "Hillary's suffered enough already" after voters asked when he was going to "lock her up". For Clinton to still have top security clearance while running her 2016 campaign, despite the FBI criminal investigations of her emails and the Clinton Foundation, says it all about her value to the deep state. How else can she still run the MSM after losing the election? Yep, Hill and Bill and Obama are still running the show for the deep state and they've captured Trump by letting him get his shiny things and deals while doing their bidding. WWW lll and total globalization are coming.

@Sunspots Are they saying chlorine now? But chlorine, though horrible on the human body, doesn't apparently have the lethality of sarin. And regardless, rescue workers would need to wear gloves and have their masks on correctly, wouldn't they?

I wonder if these people were even killed by gas at all.

We have an excuse to go to war. That's all we need. We'll decide who was responsible, thank you very much. And then change our mind, too, if we feel like it.

And if you think I am using the royal plural, you're right. The American POTUS is king of the whole world. It says so right in the Bible, um, Declaration of Independence, Constitution, um.... Well, nothing has to say so, just like nothing has to say the sky is blue or the world is round. It's just true and everyone knows it.
