Trump's healthcare bill is going down in flames

I just read that Paul Ryan went to the White House to tell President Grump they don't have the votes. Trump's long-promised "beautiful" alternative to repeal and replace the ACA is apparently DOA. I'm not surprised. Their promises were obviously lies and bluster all along. Still, it's enjoyable to see them fail so spectacularly.

It's really unfortunate that our government is too dysfunctional to pass useful legislation to improve the situation, because it does need fixing in the worst way. We need universal healthcare in this country. I don't know if this flop gets us any closer to a real solution someday. I hope so, but am certainly not expecting anything like that to happen in my lifetime.

Seeing "the great negotiator" completely fail at his first effort, top priority, and big -- no, YUGE, promise made to his voters is a small bright spot in my day. Heckofajob, Trump! He's already got his blame plan in place of course. Because that's what matters to Hair Trump. Not passing good legislation or helping anyone, which he couldn't care less about. "Who knew healthcare was so complicated?" he recently asked. Well, everyone except you, Donny. What a moran.

Anyway, anyone who was worried about them rolling back Medicaid should be able to breath a little bit easier today. A small ray of light in these dark times.

Which is a statement for just how bad their plan is.

Of course by 2018, Obamacare will be dying. So we've only bought some time.

@gjohnsit The Repugnants are vying for the Stupidest Party Award--not just the greediest. 8 years to find a replacement and epic fail. Of course the Dumbocrats are equally stupid as well as important. Except for Berniecare, what have they come with to keep health coverage afloat? Not just insurance, but actual pay-my-bills coverage.

The Repugnants have proven themselves unfit to govern, an award given to Dumbocrats for years. We need to boot all the rascals out, regardless of flavor.

Maybe they can take a clue from Wheel of Fortune: spin the wheel and start somewhere. Anywhere.

They can't come up with a replacement plan that is going to do anything but piss a lot of people off. Absolute fools.
Trump being the biggest fool. This might become a pattern with this republican controlled government, if we're lucky.

Let the people not forget how low the Republican party and trump were prepared to go in attempting to pass their killing and inhuman legislation.

If I remember correctly, a number of Republican congresspersons, some of whom were in very red districts, held town meetings and were shocked that the voters did not want to lose all coverage. I believe both parties have been reading their constituencies through the very distorted lens of the Beltway.

All they had to do is look at the most recent poll which showed only 17% of the people supporting the Ryan plan. If they try to go after Medicare and Social Security, all hell will break loose. These are issues that cut across party lines for the public.

Going back to the voters' mandate to Trump, it was jobs first. Specifically stop the flow of jobs overseas through trade agreements that do nothing for American workers. This is exactly why Clinton lost precincts in the Rust Belt that Obama carried twice.

Maybe my memory is faulty now. But I am glad that arrogant little piece of shit, Ryan, lost this round and hopefully the next round too.

They will go after those programs, and all hell had damn well better break loose! I consider it part of my job as a citizen to make sure that happens.

@gulfgal98

Despite the fact that republicans have been screeching about repealing Obamacare for years, virtually no one, regardless of their political affiliation, actually wants to give up whatever meager access to healthcare they may have at this point. The "just let us die" contingent is obviously quite small.

I find it amusing that the reason this effort failed was infighting between the republicans who wanted (or felt the political necessity) to give the people something, and the let-them-die gang, who won't vote for any bill that provides people with anything at all. There's obviously no middle ground to be found there. What were they thinking? This truly reveals the extent of both their dishonestty and their incompetence. I'm almost tempted to visit some republican sites just to watch the meltdowns that must be occurring. Smile

@CS in AZ have had a small glimpse of just what might happen to them if Obamacare is repealed. Same with Medicaid I believe - once these people start figuring out that elimination of Medicaid means they themselves will be the 24/7 care provider for an elderly parent. Damned right all hell will break loose then.

While some will take my remarks on this to be heartless, ie, why shouldn't people want to take care of Grandma? Well, when Grandma has Dementia and finds her way onto a public bus and gets hundreds of miles from home, with only the dumb luck of a bus driver who spots a problem, let them see then just what that 24/7 care might actually entail. The guy who did some work around my house had just that happen with his dad, and if not for that bus driver taking the initiative to call someone, God knows where his dad would have ended up. He and his wife have 4 kids and both work, how in hell are they gonna manage? They aren't. Simple as that. And most likely but for Medicaid or some other senior assistance program, his dad would still be home with them and at least one of them would not be able to work. Then I guess we can call that one a "taker" for not being productive towards the bottom line....

I must confess, I have always loathed that nickname for him. It makes me shudder every time I read it. Nope, I won't be visiting his fan site, but that is funny! They think this huge faceplant is part of some Trump grand strategy? LOL. How is it possible that so many people are taken in by this lying, loony scumbag? He's less believable than the very worst used car salesman ever.

I saw a car yesterday with two bumper stickers: one was a Trump sticker, the other one said "Think! It's not illegal yet." The irony kept me shaking my head and chuckling all the way home.

Markets rose this morning when it looked like there was going to be a vote, and then sank in the afternoon when Ryan pulled the vote.

@gulfgal98 When you refer to Congress people, you must need remember that under those power suits, they all look (and smell) the same. Please refer to them as CongressCritters and we will be in harmony. I have a generic picture of the species:

Note the pleasing (?) color of such a critter--both red and blue harmoniously blended. Be glad we don't have olfactory internet.

The objections, as I understand it, from the Republicans is the mandate and the current costs. They are also running up against a political wall if their solution puts millions of Americans out in the cold.

The correct solution is Single Payer, or Medicare for all, or The Public Option or whatever you want to call it. It solves all of the problems, universal coverage, and reduced costs by cutting out the insurance companies and bargaining with the drug companies. With this they could even pressure doctors to accept a reasonable income.

So if it can't be solved from the Right then neither the Republicans nor the Democrats can solve this problem. It would have to be a bipartisan group of independent minded Congress Critters that get together and propose Single Payer.

You can say that the Republicans have been totally unrealistic about health care, but that has also been true for Obama and the Democrats. Their great compromise really doesn't work. This is going to be quite a show going forward. Too bad that it's all about something that should be a basic human right.

As an interesting comparison, from Wiki:

Pre-1990s Soviet Russia had a totally socialist health care model—the Semashko system with a centralized, integrated, hierarchically organised with the government providing state-funded health care to all citizens.

The Constitution of the Russian Federation has provided all citizens the right to free healthcare under Mandatory Medical Insurance since 1996. In 2008, 621,000 doctors and 1.3 million nurses were employed in Russian healthcare...There are about 9.3 beds per thousand population—nearly double the OECD average.

The US, by the way, has 2.5 beds per 1000 population in 2014.

While some folks are praising that this Ryan bill died, others brought up their wonderful suggestions.

I've read that with the ACA all we have to do is tweak it. We just have to deal with the high premiums and then increase the tax penalty to force the young people to buy the insurance.

Yeah, no thanks. In the end we center our debate on a very limited range with vigorous debate. Chomsky mentioned this some time ago. Force vigorous debate on two corporate health insurance plans while the voices of single payer are silenced.
