Some Marcus Aurelius.
Constantly picture the universe as a living organism, controlling a single substance and a single soul, and note how all things are assimilated to single world-sense, all act by a single impulse, and all co-operate towards all that comes to pass and mark the contexture and concatenation of the web.
Time is a river, the mighty current of created things. No sooner is a thing in sight, than it is swept past, and another comes sweeping on, and will anon be by.

Very nice.
Regardless of the path in life I chose, I realize it's always forward, never straight.
Coat-of-arms has repeated
imagery of that of the Kingdom of Castile, but damned if I know what the whole thing is.
You win this round.
There are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns – the ones we don't know we don't know.
England quartered with Castile
each one of them already a quartered device. Hmmm....
There is no justice. There can be no peace.
Good point.
The Coat of arms of Castile and León depicts the traditional arms of Castile (the yellow castle) quartered with the arms of León (the red lion). It is topped with a royal crown.
But the arms we are given is quartered yet again.
Hmmm...

The blue squares along the diagonal are the arms
of the Kingdom of Galicia.
So could this be the arms of Alfonso VII, King of Castile, Leon and Galicia (1105-1157)?

Or is it the arms of some
minor duke, who was awarded bits and pieces of territory, since complex arms like these composed of several elements may refer to a partitioning of an original kingdom/dukedom?

The three lions imply a connection with England.
Eleanor of Castile, Queen of England (1241-1290), Queen Consort to Edward I?
Sorry, this one's really hard.

I think I got it!
JOHN, Duke of Lancaster and King of Castile.
John of Gaunt (Ghent)

The story of John of Gaunt
and Katherine Swynford is one of my favorite. Thanks for triggering that memory!

A shot of Katherine Swynford's tomb in Lincoln Cathedral
(along with that of her daughter Joan, on the left).
John of Gaunt was buried in St. Paul's Cathedral in London. His tomb was destroyed by the great fire of 1666.
Gëzuar!!
from a reasonably stable genius.
Actually he was "King of Castile" in name only
He put in a claim through his wife, Constance of Castile, but the Castilians said another John (Juan I Trastamara, son of the usurping and briefly reigning Enrique (Henry) II) had priority.
John of G's claim went away when Constance died, but their daughter Constance of Lancaster married Juan's son Enrique (Henry) III and settled the matter permanently, as far as the Spanish were concerned. (They could have, but did not, put in a claim that would have topped Henry VII Tudor's.)
Incidentally, the Plantagenet infusion is probably where Isabella I (of Columbus fame) and her daughters, particularly Joana "la Loca" and Catherine of Aragon, got their red-blond hair.
There is no justice. There can be no peace.
Yep!

I was hoping Gerrit would come by
with more thoughts on Resilience........... and Marcus Aurelius.

Nice reminder and prompt Bollox, for the troubled mind.

“When thou hast been compelled by circumstances to be disturbed in a manner, quickly return to thyself and do not continue out of tune longer than the compulsion lasts; for thou wilt have more mastery over the harmony by continually recurring to it. ” – Marcus Aurelius, Meditations
I miss Geritt's words of hope as well ...
Resilience and spirituality are the qualities I personally wish to pursue now. I voted. Occasionally sign petitions. Tweet or retweet. But there is nothing more I can currently do about national politics.
Time to focus on family, friends, and community.
Geritt's essays were a great source of encouragement.

I love his resilience essays.

I Just Watched an Interesting Docudrama on Commodus, Marcus
Aurelius' crazy, narcissistic, son. It was pretty entertaining: Roman Empire: Reign of Blood.
Actually reminded me of Chelsea Clinton after reading the comments on this thread.

thanks for calling up marcus
have already located my Meditations, and will read once again how to manage my mind;
so that no matter what goes on once the new administration goes to work, i, or my mind at least, won't be tossed around in the coming storm
