For Gerrit...

Some Marcus Aurelius.

Constantly picture the universe as a living organism, controlling a single substance and a single soul, and note how all things are assimilated to single world-sense, all act by a single impulse, and all co-operate towards all that comes to pass and mark the contexture and concatenation of the web.

Time is a river, the mighty current of created things. No sooner is a thing in sight, than it is swept past, and another comes sweeping on, and will anon be by.

The Coat of arms of Castile and León depicts the traditional arms of Castile (the yellow castle) quartered with the arms of León (the red lion). It is topped with a royal crown.

But the arms we are given is quartered yet again.

Hmmm...

So could this be the arms of Alfonso VII, King of Castile, Leon and Galicia (1105-1157)?

minor duke, who was awarded bits and pieces of territory, since complex arms like these composed of several elements may refer to a partitioning of an original kingdom/dukedom?

John of Gaunt was buried in St. Paul's Cathedral in London. His tomb was destroyed by the great fire of 1666.

He put in a claim through his wife, Constance of Castile, but the Castilians said another John (Juan I Trastamara, son of the usurping and briefly reigning Enrique (Henry) II) had priority.

John of G's claim went away when Constance died, but their daughter Constance of Lancaster married Juan's son Enrique (Henry) III and settled the matter permanently, as far as the Spanish were concerned. (They could have, but did not, put in a claim that would have topped Henry VII Tudor's.)

Incidentally, the Plantagenet infusion is probably where Isabella I (of Columbus fame) and her daughters, particularly Joana "la Loca" and Catherine of Aragon, got their red-blond hair.

Resilience and spirituality are the qualities I personally wish to pursue now. I voted. Occasionally sign petitions. Tweet or retweet. But there is nothing more I can currently do about national politics.

Time to focus on family, friends, and community.

Geritt's essays were a great source of encouragement.

Aurelius' crazy, narcissistic, son. It was pretty entertaining: Roman Empire: Reign of Blood.

Actually reminded me of Chelsea Clinton after reading the comments on this thread. Biggrin
