ObamaTrade dies a quick death
Submitted by gjohnsit on Fri, 11/11/2016 - 5:57pm
It looks like there is a silver-lining to the Trump victory.
European Union Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom said EU-U.S. negotiations on a free-trade agreement would probably be put on hold indefinitely because of Donald Trump’s victory in the American presidential election.
A sweeping Pacific trade pact meant to bind the U.S.and Asia effectively died Friday, as Republican and Democratic leaders in Congress told the White House they won’t advance it in the election’s aftermath, and Obama administration officials acknowledged it has no way forward now.
The failure to pass the 12-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership—by far the biggest trade agreement in more than a decade—is a bitter defeat for President Barack Obama, whose belated but fervent support for freer trade divided his party and complicated the campaign of Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.
The White House had lobbied hard for months in the hope of moving forward on the pact if Mrs. Clinton had won.
You have the Canadian Prime Minister and his Mexican counterpart that are now saying, “hey buddies… hey United States… we want to renegotiate NAFTA.”
…Maybe, just maybe, we might actually have a little bit of justice… he hasn’t even taken the oath of office yet.

But I've no doubt that the conspirators will try to sneak it through again - especially since Trump's wish-list includes many of what would be demanded under these traitorous corporate coups.
It's not like these guys are smart enough to realize that they'd still be screwing themselves and their kids/grandkids in destroying civilization and the global life support system simply to drain all of the rest of the money these corporations and billionaires already have the great bulk of - and would then be left with nothing to spend it on anyway, with the whole world and unregulated financial system in wreckage and oxygen-free, as well...

C'mon Ellen, tell us how you really feel.
Because we want to be sure you are invited to the big bonfire at the treaty burning. This rotten election may give us some compost to bury a few Dem-oligarch giveaways.

Nix NAFTA and TPP
A middle class tax break and spend money on infrastructure is how Trump gets reelected. IF he gets those things done.

Precisely Why I Would Not Get My Hopes Up
Trump will only negotiate what benefits him, will leave it to the Gobbels crowd (Mike Pence, Larry Kudlow, et al) to redo the trade deals otherwise as he has no experience.

Business and Medicine Don't Mix Well, and When Mixed Should
be monitored closely.
Life giving medicine and medical care are terrible commodities. If you don't get them, you die kind of distorts the market.
We need to create a medical system where the profits exist on the margins, not in the middle of it all. We can create a world class public health care system. We can and do fund research at public colleges across the country. We need to make healthcare a human right. It should be the right of every American Citizen to get life saving medicine and medical treatment.
If it were half as important as Oil or War we would have done it already.

9Is that acronymic enough?) She lent a book to me, currently buried on my dining room table, that large horizontal slab that becomes repository for all things paperlike. TR Reid's book about healthcare in the US. Somewhat dated, ends right about the time ACA arose. But clearly, the basic premise here in the US is wrong. Now with the ACA in death spiral, we have a second chance to make things better. I am not holding my breath.

Trump has a window
where he can steal away the working class for a generation, and make the Dems a permanent minority party.
I hope not, but he can.
Obama had the same window and blew it.
Bill Clinton, Obama, and now Trump campaigned as populists

Yes, I am quite sure you are correct on this.
My only hope is that the youngs who made Bernie's campaign the success that it attained have not given up and will prevail.

It has precedent...
The Republicans, remember, -used- to be the party of the People. When they decided to become the party of big business, the Democrats switched out and became the People's party.
Third Way has been trying to kill off us FDR democrats forever, and establish the party as an alternative version of the Repubs.... hmmm... Dare I say a "kinder, gentler" corporate party?! (LOL)
I doubt very seriously that he's a praying man.
But he better start now so he figures out exactly what the garbage is controlling Congress. Rec'd!

Poor Barack
I wonder if the owners will give him part of his payoff for putting in a valiant effort. But he's still has a fine legacy. He kissed the republicans asses till his lips were chapped and he's kept the wars going. Income inequality is at an all time high and the banks are getting ready to ram it up our asses again. But at least he gave us Obamacare
and single payer...PS. I hope Trump's a critter of his word on TPP. I don't trust the turtle Mitch any further than I could throw him.

Some of my gay friends give him some credit, others
point to the recovery funding and green energy support during his first term as important.
But yeah, there are long lists of what he didn't do. And of course there's precedents such as non-judicial killings etc that he is leaving for Trump to build upon...

How about the TiSA?
that's a 50 nation "service" agreement that I hope goes down the drain too. Another corporations over rule nations agreement.

BTW, gjohn, I mosied over to TOP and saw your article. Quite good. Thorough, critical without condescending -- though sometimes one is forced to over there. Your message was succinct. Comments were interesting. Thoughtful at first, then of course, descending into anarchy at the end of the page.

But . . . But . . . What About Obama's Legacy??!
We all needed at least some good news.
And the death of those "free trade" agreements definitely qualifies as good news.
Thank you gjohnsit.

I wondered who wrote this poppycock.
It was the Wall Street Journal, the most self-unaware business journal published. Neocon through and through.
Obama did NOT support "freer trade." He supported blocking the rise of Eurasia via military channels and un-credible Dollar hegemony. The TPP was Hillary's baby while Secretary of State. It was launched about the same time that she wrote Pivot to Asia, which is essentially a revision of the Project for a New American Century.
The TPP exists solely to block China's ability to trade with other nations via the Pacific.
The TTIP exists solely to block Russia's ability to trade with other nations via the Atlantic.
The TPP is being retired because several of the principle co-signers are walking away, others are non-responsive. All of them are planning to move forward trading with their own currencies instead of US Dollars. And settling outside the SWIFT system, most likely at China's Asian Investment Bank AIIB. That way the US cannot trace their transactions, ending the abusive era of US sanctions and fines. That is the future of trade.
No it didn't complicate Clinton's campaign one bit. It was already a twisted knot of deceitful snakes, from the moment it began. We all got the memos via Wikileaks.
The propaganda is thick at the WSJ.
Libya was trying do do the same thing for Africa
by establishing a currency and funding development projects. Thus they had to be eliminated.
Yes. It was a horrifying tragedy inside a war crime.
A united Africa is out of the question. That's why the US has boots on the ground in 34 African nations.
Believe ANYONE in Congress about NOT selling us out? ha ha ha
Until this pack of lying scum is legally no longer Congress, I don't believe them.
Remember how, after the 2010 Congressional drubbings, the Dim-0-CRAP$ in the lame duck turned around and sould us out on GWB Jr.'s tax welfare by ... extending the tax welfare? One of the headlines I saw a reference to was quoting Schumer! ha ha.
believe that guy?? yeah, whatever.

possibilities for progress. Time will tell, but this is a good start. I know that there will be some stuff I really won't like, but I'm going to hope for the best.

TULSI 2020
I agree
His three priorities to start are Border security (who cares), health care (I say get rid of compulsory insurance), and jobs (through civic works). Works for me. The point is, see what he does not what he says [I learned this from the previous administration]. By week two of Obomber's admin. I knew I was hoodwinked.
To a point, I agree with some points...
but what really matters is what the Tea Party/Conservative Republicans LET him do, and what they push thru instead. Trump doesn't know how constrained he is with reference to Congress yet. When that hits him, he's NOT going to be happy.
I fear Paul Ryan and the rest of the Tea Party nuts more than I fear Trump.
