Open Thread 11-03-16: An Oldie but a Goodie
Shaz and I are having computer problems (means we $#%$ed up a bit) so I'm going to use something I originally posted at Wimpy Badger in 2007. I'll update some of it!
No, but seriously, I'm still having that problem with adding photos so there won't be any. Oh, I'll try alright, but I don't expect success. That banner up there? Copied from an old essay and pasted in. I should probably do that, pepper this one with photos of Graham Nash and Franz Liszt.
Anyway, so here we are, 5 days away from the end of the world. Shaz and I saw a bumper sticker today that said "We're so Screwed - 2016!" I think I've seen a couple of Hillary stickers, no Trumps. I can't even recall any Jill bumper stickers. The enthusiasm level is so low. We read about how early voting is showing a low turnout for Hillary's constituencies, African-Americans and Latinos. Maybe she'll lose after all. I got scolded (!!) by a friend for suggesting that she might lose and if she does it'll be because the Democratic Party made the mistake of getting her nominated. But I believe I'm right about that. I don't want Trump to win but I hope Hillary loses. But not to Trump. Yes, "We're so Screwed - 2016!"
Now for the oldie....I wrote a bunch of music things for Wimpy Badger and here's one of them...(and after you enjoy the tunes...or after you skip them, feel free to discuss anything you like)
----------------------
Before we leave the 1950s, here are some songs that you might or might know, that are a little unusual in one way or another.
The Jive Bombers were a New York group that started recording in the '40s so it's no surprise that their recording from the '50s have a throwback sound. I love this song and was floored the first time I heard it, thanks to the "trumpet" that's not a trumpet at all.
Richard Berry will be forever remembered as the writer of "Louie Louie". I think my favorite of his is "Next Time", a funny talking song where the protagonist gets in all kinds of scrapes and flees each one, saying "next time....", like the landlord wanting the rent, or the man with a warrant for child support. Verses start with things like "well, after the commotion had settled down..." It's a great tune but I can't find it on youtube. Instead I'm including Berry's own version of "Louie Louie". Also great!
Duane Eddy was my first guitar hero. His biggest hit was "Rebel Rouser". I think every guitarist of my generation must have learned how to play that one. It's so simple yet so cool. What kept his records fresh was how one verse would be Eddy and the next, the saxaphone of Steve Douglas. On this tune it's Douglas who really stars in this wild record. It's slow yet almost out of control, thank to Douglas' sax.
Dave Bartholomew is from New Orleans and is famous mostly as a songwriter and producer. Now 97 (!), his big successes came in the '50s. He wrote "I Hear You Knocking", co-wrote lots of Fats Domino songs like "Ain't that a Shame" and "Blue Monday". He produced "Lawdy Miss Clawdy", recorded by Lloyd Price. This next one is Bartholomew as a recording artist, a piece of philosophy that we all can relate to.
Some parents shuddered at Elvis, disliked Jerry Lee, but most of them were terrified of Gene Vincent, who looked the part of the juvenile delinquent. He was only 36 when he died but he'd been beaten up a lot by life. A motorcycle accident busted up his leg, then a car crash in England, the one that killed Eddie Cochran, broke his ribs and collarbone. He was in constant pain after that and took to carrying a gun that he liked to point at people. Here's one that's entertaining. Would you want these guys over for dinner?
I'd first heard Ric Cartey on a rockabilly compilation, doing great songs like "Born to Love One Woman" and "Oo-eee". What a great idea to have three "e"s in the title! When he recently died and I read his obit I was surprised to learn that he'd written "Young Love", the great Sonny James hit which also did well for Tab Hunter. I like the idea that I was a fan of his without knowing that, though. Here's one of his howling hillbilly hits.
"For dessert there was batwing confetti and the veins of a mummy named Betty. I first frowned upon it, but with ketchup on it, it tasted very much like spaghetti". There's another version of this, a little tamer and not as funny. Sometimes I wonder what it is in society that makes a song like this necessary! John Zacherle is from Philadelphia and just passed away the other day at the age of 98.
The '50s came to a close with that plane crash thing, with Elvis going into the Army and coming out as a freak, with Little Richard retiring. There was still room for cool stuff in the next few years but there was an awful lot of Bobby this and Bobby that.
----------------------
So that's what I wrote awhile back...still lots of fun.

Well, heck, Donna Brazile, Podesta, & Hillary thought it was OK
A few questions in advance, so what? What’s the problem? Jeez, talk about making a big deal over nothing.
Ouch, excellent
Like the GOP in this cycle, the guys who flunked are heroes
to the following extent:
They knew full well it was going to be a disaster and affect their future adversely, yet they had the courage to face up to the fact they were going to faceplant on the test (= in the election with Trump) and still make the personal decision that flunking the test fair and square was preferable to cheating (= rigging the primary process).
Democrats, on the other hand . . . suffice it to say moral invertebrates and power are a bad, bad combination on any level, whether personal or planetary.
On the fast track for Wall Street
Anyone relying on the integrity of a widely used testbank is somewhat naive since in this day and age it requires a high level of security at every site where is administered.
"We're so Screwed - 2016!"
The perfect bumper sticker.
Still pulling for Giant Meteor.
"More for Gore or the son of a drug lord--None of the above, fuck it, cut the cord."
--Zack de la Rocha
"I tell you I'll have nothing to do with the place...The roof of that hall is made of bones."
-- Fiver
Although I sent in a ballot
Although I sent in a ballot for Stein, I am also voting Gamma-Burst 2016
So long, and thanks for all the fish

Disoriented, napping (sleeping) this AM the phone rings
Private caller (shit, could be a doctor) and this voice says "hi, it's Dave! How's your internet?" Rolodex, because he had said my name. THE PHONE GUY. Rolodex kicked in. He will look at my messy house after 12. He's Samoan. Nice man.
Dog then went ballistic like company is here and it's the propane guy. well, it's autumn, winter is coming and my drive is not.good. for backing uphill then. I just checked the door hangar bill. Only $650. Half a 500 gal tank. Full tank might make it most of the way through winter. A dumb idea to place a 500 gal bomb next to the house.
All this stuff boiling about me. As in around. My stress level is exceeding Post-concussion(s)' ability to cope well. But it's raining, and 4 plants in the ground to root in before frost and winter.
Political drama is boiling as well. Let them all boil.
Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.
Those bombs are pretty stout.
As a kid had an Estes rocket motor fly into one. It'd take a tracer round to set one off. Or fifteen minute in a bonfire. You have more than enough worries.
There is no such thing as TMI. It can always be held in reserve for extortion.
Estes rockets!
I can picture them clearly...the whole process. Getting the parts, carefully assembling the rocket (including the straw on the side for guidance), putting a parachute in the nose, loading it up with that propellant unit, setting it on the pad, attaching the clippers to the little wire stuck in the propellant tube, getting back away, counting down, pushing the button, watching in amazement, seeing the parachute pop out way up there, following where the wind took it.
Great fun for a 12 year old.
No offense to males
but what is with their fascination of blowing shit up with propulsion devises, firecrackers, rockets and anything that's fiery and goes boom. Makes everybody including animals hate the 4th of July and kills people en mass for no good reasons.
well it didn't blow anything up
speaking for myself, I saw it as part of the adventure, the very beginning of space exploration. I see it differently now. Now I see life on our planet as being absolutely linked to the planet itself. I'm pretty sure we're not going anywhere.
But as a kid the idea was appealing. I still like the idea of adventure but am happy to restrict it to this world.
we are restive creatures.
we crave fascination, and few things are more fascinating than fire and its miscellaneous cousins.
The earth is a multibillion-year-old sphere.
The Nazis killed millions of Jews.
On 9/11/01 a Boeing 757 (AA77) flew into the Pentagon.
AGCC is happening.
If you cannot accept these facts, I cannot fake an interest in any of your opinions.
... you doin' OK river?
... there was some concern about you a few days ago, but it was attributed (mainly) to "computer issues". Are there ways that our (small) community might be able to assist?
When Cicero had finished speaking, the people said “How well he spoke”.
When Demosthenes had finished speaking, the people said “Let us march”.
Ehhh, OK. No, I am fine and functional
Just a bunch-o-life hits, and maybe depression again. I will be fine.

Hey, Shah, thanks. This'll give me some listening while I get
my act together today, which, the way it's going, could take all day. Hah! Have a good one & good luck with the computer.
That, in its essence, is fascism--ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power. -- Franklin D. Roosevelt --
I don't want Trump to win but I hope Hillary loses.
That's the 2016 election in a nutshell!
