Peace Train - Open Thread
Good Morning Folks!
Making an effort to keep things positive, focusing on the potentials for peace. Recalling the optimism we felt in the early 70's when peace rally's seemed to make a difference. Peace in the world, searching for peace within, sending peace to our fellow travelers. It seemed to be a working theme.
Makes me think of the lessons learned from the natives in the reservation regions out west. Met with caution at first, but trust once earned, became a force for good.
This is the Grand entrance of a Native American Indian powwow
Some of the tribes had differing versions of the peace pipe. It was a shared sacred offering with acceptance of common responsibilities.
Maybe the herbs we smoked helped to frame that consciousness.
Peace be with you.

Good morning QMS
Thanks for the morning OT. We are going to be 75 today in metro Detroit. I think we should have spring, summer, fall, 2 weeks of winter then rinse and repeat. That group must be similar to the one GG use to meet. She will enjoy that.
"Religion is what keeps the poor from murdering the rich."--Napoleon
75 eh? 46 (later high) East of you in Ithaca NY (not Greece)
And I was awakened by bad ticking sounds on the windows. Mixed precipitation patches still moving through. Plus, I saw fecal remnants of mouse visitation to dog food bowl and the counter-height mousetrap had deployed with a dead Microtus (deer mouse) now deadly hanging out on the front porch. Halloween decoration? Some critter might find it and the mousetrap is plastic and deadly but preciouss to me. So later, mouse toss. A local favorite of mine. I have not been Lyme-tested with all my recent blood work (I will review those documents again). They make a snap test for that, used in both dogs and humans. My Previous dog had 2(two) episodes of Lyme. Dead husband had one, and a sunburn from Doxycycline Dx afterward. I think new dog got vaccinated for Lyme, new vaccine formulation, old one not efficacious at all.
Meh day here, I hope better for many.
Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.
Whoa, what week are we in?
Very confusing with comments pre-dated. And for some reason, c99 clock runs 4 min fast. And has for some time. We can't even agree on UTC? It's propaganda everywhere?
Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.
I know what you mean about those dates.
I thought I'd been smoking too much of the herb.
"Wow, man. Am I going to get to live this past week over again?"
One of the things brought by the 60s was an increased interest in other cultures. Those who had turned on and tuned in recognized that our culture was a materialistic, authoritarian, and supremely violent mess, and it was time to look elsewhere for some new models. Buddhism, Hinduism and Native American spiritualism all became intense objects of study and emulation.
I jumped aboard the "Peace Train" back then and have never gotten off.
On the theme of Yusef Islam, here's one of my favorites that has now been co-opted by some damn car company. If you're watching sports on TV (plead guilty), you see that ad 50 times. "But that's Maude's song," I cry out. "You can't have Maude's song, you greedy assholes."

Glad to see ya on the train... all aboard
"You can't have Maude's song, you greedy assholes."
Very special song to me! I live in a weird little town...one of my neighbors has a license plate "UBUIBME". When our local little production company put on Harold and Maude a couple of years ago, the otherwise perfect Harold tried to play the song at the end, on a banjo. He was flubbing it. It was all I could do to stop from running up on the stage and helping him.
"I’m a human being, first and foremost, and as such I’m for whoever and whatever benefits humanity as a whole.” —Malcolm X
That's a great license plate.
Your avatar is driving me crazy. I lived in Taos briefly and northern New Mexico for quite a while. I remember a hardware store (I think it was--it wasn't the mercantile store on the Plaza) that had a sign behind the counter with the distances from Taos to cities all over the world, and that symbol was a prominent part of it. And that symbol was about the most popular t-shirt decoration, etc. around there.
But I remember nothing about what it was called or its derivation.
Kokopeli
Pueblo culture. Common in New Mexico petroglyphs. Something of a clown/trickster, obviously a musician (usually depicted with a flute, not a banjo!) Sometimes a fertility symbol, too...with some obvious additions to the image. I drew up an early version of this about ten years ago...my artist partner refined it very nicely a few years ago.
"I’m a human being, first and foremost, and as such I’m for whoever and whatever benefits humanity as a whole.” —Malcolm X
Looking back through the mist...
Finally figured it out. It's Kokopelli, but he's a flute player. Nice adaptation.
sorry rl
my post vacuumed up the comments from last week, somehow. Didn't mean to create a time warp here. oops
Thanks dkm
It works! Yay! Grew up in south central Michigan and do remember those 3 season days. Talk about changes...
Good morning QMS
Thanks for the open thread and the reminder of all those great people who are still working for the cause. 15 years and still strong, that's fantastic.
There is nothing which I dread so much as a division of the republic into two great parties.. This...is to be dreaded as the greatest political evil under our Constitution.--John Adams
Good day Kharma
Yeah, we started a peaceful vigil during the beating drums after 9/11. Candles and readings, songs and hand holding, circles of energy...but the wars started anyway. This became our focus of resistance. 15 years on, but we still make a statement. We still want peace!
Speaking of 15 years on....
I got this from Russ Feingold today:
EDIT: On my computer this thread has comments from both today (25Oct) and one week ago (18Oct) and without realizing it I responded to a comment from a week ago. Go figure, eh?

protests around the world too
I'm glad to see folks pushing for peace here in the US. People around the world are standing up...they just don't want us to know. Here's a few things happening in our hemisphere that most don't know...

Thanks for the news that Assange is still publishing OLinda, and thanks for the open thread QMS.
“Until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”
Thanks Lookout
I laughed out loud at the RT you tube video ending. I read a Guardian article about the internet cut off of Assange this morning. It had something like 3500 comments and it was depressing as the, oh my god Putin and Trump, the Russians are coming, Assange haters, were out in force. Can this world get any crazier about this fake election? thanks for the links.
Looked at RT clip
And caught a written quote from an injured child in some war torn country as I left you tube. The child asked, "Will my foot grow back?" I've been crying ever since. I should watch that video I'm sure, but I cannot. Nor can I stop thinking about that poor child.
What kind of people are we, that we allow this to be done in our names? Why aren't we all in the streets all the time raising hell about this insanity?
RT may be from Russia
and it may be slanted but they do cover some real news. I too looked at the you tubes on the right side and found that one and several others that were horrifying about these wars we deem necessary for some reason that makes no sense. Unless you examine the real reasons they then world dominance PNAC agenda and the cold greed oil pipelines and access to what ever else they want to loot resource wise. The Great Game the empire game all tarted up as threats to our national security/interests or the war on terra.
I don't know why ordinary people are not more riled up. I sure am. I'm having a hard time these days reading and searching on the net for what's really going on. When I do find some truth it's heart breaking. I sort of understand why many people left and right do not want to have to deal with the reality of our present world. Russians, Americans, Arabs. Mexicans. Greeks all of us are just humans. Why are we globally being denied those pesky universal rights and inalienable truths. Centuries old laws, old rights are gone daddy gone. I wish people here in the USA would stop thinking us vs.them be it Blue vs Red or East vs. West, liberals vs. conservatives. It seems to me the lines drawn are false and the purpose is to divide and conquer.
Yeah, you right!
(as they say in the crescent city). People standing up, holding banners, making our voices be heard. There are probably many similar groups here in uncle sam land doing the same type of things. Wish we could consolidate THAT into a you tube twitter flitter. The justice stream may flow into a river...
This OT is near and dear to my heart
For over four years I was a participant in a local Peace vigil. The vigil was begun 13 and a half years ago in response to the Iraq war. At its inception, there were 35 stalwart members. With the election of Obama, many of the members stopped coming. But a small group persisted and I discovered them four and a half years ago and joined. Unfortunately, the Peace vigil had to disband in early June of this year when it got down to just two of us, myself and 87 year old Don who was an original member. Don made the call and we ceased to exist on a regular basis. I wrote about it here.
This photo was taken a little over two years ago. From left to right: me, Bill, Richard (who was 92 at the time), Keith, and Don. Richard, Bill and Don were all original members. Richard was the first to leave due to problems associated with his age. Then Keith left. So earlier this year, we were down to me, Bill, and Don. When Bill began to have health issues, that is when Don made the decision to disband the Peace vigil.
I really miss the conversations we had with people every week. Were we going to change the world? No, but we did change quite a few people's minds about how useless these wars are.
Thank you for this wonderful Open Thread.
Do I hear the sound of guillotines being constructed?
“Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable." ~ President John F. Kennedy
when I saw the photo I wondered if this were GG!
nice to know there's more than one vigil in the US.
We see that Jill is polling at 2% and we see that the anti-war sentiment is pathetically low. If people hadn't had vigils and marches in the 60s there wouldn't have been any problems for the government with its Vietnam horror.
Whenever I mention "the time I marched with Martin Luther King Jr." I say it in a half-joking way because there were so many people there! It wasn't like he and I were side by side. There were more people there than there were at a 2008 Obama rally! We need more marches, more mobilizations, a guillotine, more outspoken politicians, a better press.
But vigils are a start.
Anti-war sentiment is being discouraged by our fearless
"What me worry?" leaders. The saber rattling at the DNC was disgusting. I'd have mistaken it for a GOP function if I didn't know better.

googling Dem convention brings up some sad stuff
I was looking for a report from July about the Hillary contingent drowning out "no more war!" with "U-S-A!" and found articles with titles like "The Democrats' Republican Moment". So....yeah.
Who'd a thunk it? Even just four years ago I
could never have imagined such scenes.

Thanks GG
We also started with many more, it has dwindled a bit over the years. Seems strange it's mostly us older folks that keep on. We remember the effects of our demonstrations during the 'nam war days. It worked then, maybe get the kids involved, it could work again.
Yeah GG
You would love the humor these survivors share. Will put you in touch if you wish.
Heya, QMS. Thanks for the OT and the QMS tune. We used to have
a local peace vigil, but I only went a few times - it was at night, which just did not work for us due to assorted conflicts.

Kudos on your 'maiden' OT, QMS! Even though
my schedule usually prevents me from participating in early morning OT's/threads, I greatly enjoy reading them, and rec'ing them later in the day.
Hope to have some photos to post of the Fall change-of-leaves in our neck-of-the-woods, if we get to make our trip this season. (Warning: They will be shot with a dinky smartphone camera, if we get any.)
Have a great day!

Just got a very serious letter from the democratic congressional campaign committee signed by Nancy herself. Of course begging for money. I wrote on the money form "I'm not a democrat anymore. I don't do business with thieves who steal elections. Jill2016" put it in the prepaid envelope and sent it back. Damn that felt good....

CA-02 leads, Huffman representin'. Don't ask why these products pass muster (customs?) to begin with, that would harsh the buzz for sure dude. Oversight is such a drag man. Peace
The comments are disabled for that Peace Train video.
But before they did that I wrote an essay about those comments. Someone very early in the comments simply stated, "Peace from _________", stating where they were from. That took off and nearly everyone thereafter simply said "Peace from __________". I ended up counting the number of countries represented by those statements and it was over 110. People from all over the world in over 110 countries all saying the same thing, Peace.
That's tell you something right there.
Wow
That's very cool Big Al. Makes one feel less isolated.
I saw a Jill Stein sign today
here in NC where she is only a write in candidate. Actually, I saw three signs. But what I love is her campaign slogan.
I can wish. Since I vote in Florida, I have already voted for Jill. I suspect that her vote totals may surprise people.

I received a pile of them from our Green Party state organizer (RI) for free. Just have to get the metal bases from a sign shop, or office supply. Cheers
Cool. I don't have a yard
but I did make a Facebook Cover Page image from the yard sign. So at least friends and family will see it.

Did anyone else read H.G. Wells 'When the Sleeper Wakes'?
Woody did a poor, though humorous, screen adaption in Sleeper.
There is no such thing as TMI. It can always be held in reserve for extortion.
I've never read the book (I should!)
but saw Sleeper early in my life. Without the book for comparison, I thought it was masterful. The dark humor, the absolute bumbling of all the apparatus... it was an early shaper of my philosophy that has stuck. I even posted a scene from it, a few weeks ago, to illustrate something going on today.

Brewer & Shipley say it far better than I can.
"When we remember we are all mad, the mysteries disappear and life stands explained." - Mark Twain
I saw them again 3 years ago.
They were still great to hear and see. When I was a teenager, I took my spouse-to-be to see them at the Vanguard in KC. I brought that up during their very informal performance here, and Shipley went into a riff about the geeky kids who used to show up there. "I was one of those geeky kids," I replied, and boy, was I.
Witchai Tai To is one of my top 5 of all time. It's hard to come up with a better affirmation of life than that tune.

Yes! Witchi-tai-to is also
one of my top five from Brewer and Shipley.
It makes me crazy that they never play anything on the radio except 'One Toke Over the Line' when there are so many better tracks by them. Actually, that goes for pretty much any artist.

That's fabulous!
Gives me a tinge of optimism to lighten the heavy pessimism I've been feeling.
Pirate Party
Two things:
The use of "libertarian" in this passage, when applied to Icelandic Pirate Party members, is obviously being used in its European sense, not the heartless Randian crap sold under that name in the USA; and
Speaking of the USA, we have a Pirate Party here, too. We're nowhere near where the Icelandic Pirates are, but everything must begin somewhere.

Bobby Vee died yesterday. When we talk about how the pop world was taken over by Bobbys we mean Bobby Vee, Bobby Rydell, Bobby Vinton. Even Fabian was a Bobby! Well, in spirit, anyway. And you can't get more Bobby-er than Bobby Vee.
And yet Bob Dylan, who played in Vee's band for a short while before his folkie days, said “I’ve played with everybody from Mick Jagger to Madonna, but the most beautiful person I’ve ever been on stage with is Bobby Vee."
Well...be that as it may, yesterday there was a lot of Vee's music going around the internet, especially his biggest hit. Was it terrible? Was it the singer? the song? Here's the Beatles' version of it.
I like it better than the original.
Glad you noted that, Shah
I was one of those screaming teenage girl fans of Bobby Vee. Back in the days when idols were created by record companies, Bobby could actually sing too. He had early onset Alzheimer's. Very sad.
