The Day I Met Donald Trump...............or Friday Photos

Well, it was quite a day, I can tell you.

I was sitting in a coffee place on W. 49th St., minding my own business, looking at the crap under my fingernails, when who should wander in but the man himself.

Of course, I really didn't know who the man himself was at the time. Just some suit with a wild, wild haircut.

The place was a little busy, so he plonks himself down on the seat opposite me and starts to regale me with some tale about......

Nah, I'll have to save it for another time.

Anyway, here are some photos for Friday, if anyone cares to join:

I recognize the caterpillar (what an odd word...... caterpillar).

Anyway, we haven't had Swallowtails for a few years now. The lack of butterflies is getting very disturbing.

ms. shikspack plants lots of goodies for them, our yard is full of butterfly food. we noticed a sharp decline a few years back in just about every type of butterfly and ms. shikspack redoubled her efforts to help them out. over the past couple of years we've seen pretty good growth in the numbers of everything that we used to have except for monarchs (which we used to have lots of), viceroys and red admirals.

Has attempted the same, but we are still lacking, a few years later.

A decade ago, we used to have Monarchs, Mourning Cloaks, Swallowtails, Spice Bushes, etc.

I did see one Mourning Cloak this year, and we've had a couple of Monarchs and a Red Admiral, but nary a Swallowtail.

It reminds me of the demise of hedgehogs in the UK. Three/four decades ago, they were as common as muck. Now they are hard to come by. Three/four decades ago, people had front and back gardens that allowed hedgehogs to travel about. These days, front gardens have become paved over car parks. Lots of water run off, and no hedgehogs.

made it all the way to NZ. Occasionally I even see one of them traveling across my deck. They can move faster than I ever would have imagined.

Thank you. What plant is that with the train of caterpillars moving across?

joe shikspack's picture

it is rue, which swallowtail caterpillars find absolutely delicious. when i took those pictures, there were more than 20 caterpillars munching on that single plant.

If the caterpillars enjoy the flavour so much, maybe it's time for me to try its culinary delights. Thanks for the info.

fennel, some swallowtail caterpillars prefer fennel to rue. oh what the heck, try planting both. Smile

It grows as a perennial here, but I've never seen any caterpillars on them. I think I'll skip the rue. It doesn't sound too tasty to the human palate, and can quickly take over here in the Auckland climate.

but it's a beautiful compound-leaf grey-green plant that tends to go near-invasive, like sage. And those caterpillars are the jewels!

Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.

make us "tea" with the leaves to avoid cramps, weak because it was though that rue could cause heavy bleeding. And grandma use a poultice for her migraines.

We have many here and they are hungry. My butterfly plant will not support all of them.

you could also plant fennel for swallowtails. if you know what kind of butterflies are in your area, you can check out this list for food plants for their larval stage.

I'm great at multi-tasking. I can waste time, be unproductive, and procrastinate all at the same time.

The idea of a mechanical instrument, like a camera, being able to record a split second of life, with such beauty and fascination, makes me smile.

The hummingbird is just beautiful. Thank you.

We've had several around this year. They are feisty little creatures and will scrap at each other. The ones that came by were happy enough to sit a while and chirp.... as long as they were alone.

The Hummingbirds around where I live are also very feisty about protecting their territory and are very vocal when chasing others away.

The bluejays put them to shame. But I love hearing those tiny squeaks of dismay with another entrant to feeder zone. Family members (I presume offspring) are acceptable companions.

to this Friday's P O T, and for taking tonight.

Is that the same bridge that crosses the Mississippi in your neighbourhood? Your compositions are so strong and very interesting to look at. I am glad that you share them with us. Please tell me what coastline that is.

Springtime in Auckland. All native plant life, except the red Camellia my neighbour planted.

The coastline is Budleigh Salterton, Devonshire, England.

You appear to live in quite a flowery spot.

but actually, these two are just small corners, that for a short time each spring are flowery. The rest is every shade of green imaginable.

Here, last week, are the red flowers of an early flowering Pohutakawa and yellow Kowhai.

Definitely not Minnesota or Devonshire.

I really enjoy how you integrate varied elements, from both nature and hand-made, into very unique sculptures.
