'Tis the Feast of St. Wenceslaus, but I'm not Czech, so meh. I mean, how much of a saint can you really be if you don't merit a California place name? Off the top of my head, we got Andy twice, Izzy, Isabel. Pedro, Diego, Juan, two of the Louis, Paula, Barbara, Francisco, Anselmo, Carlos, Bernard, Ana, Monica. Hell, Santa Ana even has a freeway named after her. So, off to the web we go.

How many cities/towns in California start with "San" or "Santa"? | Yahoo Answers says:
1. San Anselmo http://www.townofsananselmo.org
2. San Bernardino http://www.ci.san-bernardino.ca.us
3. San Bruno http://www.sanbruno.ca.gov
4. San Carlos http://www.cityofsancarlos.org

Plus the city & island of Santa Catalina, but they skipped San Andreas, the fault and the town in the sierras, San Ysidro, Santa Ysabel, San Lorenzo, and the second, third, and fourth San Joaquins (county, river, and valley). And, SF is both city and county, too, also, as are San Berdoo, Santa Clara, San Mateo, San Diego, Santa Barbara, and San Louis Obispo. And then, does Rancho Santa Margarita count, or South San Francisco? Finally, searching for "San" and "Santa" skips the obvious wine country town of Saint Helena. Huge numbers of streets and schools named after Junipero Serra are now retroactively named after a saint. (patron saint of colonial imperialists?)Then there's Santa Claus lane, I mean, we've even got south saint so and so BUT no Wenceslaus. Sorry, dude.

Speaking of which, the future site of San Diego was "discovered", much to the dismay of the locals, by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo of Portugal on this day in 1542.

Your basic "song with Monday" in the title or lyrics for today.

too much money in politics

In a new Bloomberg Politics national poll, 78 percent of those responding said the Citizens United ruling should be overturned, compared with 17 percent who called it a good decision...
Unhappiness with the 2010 decision cuts across demographic and partisan and ideological lines. Although the ruling was fashioned by the court’s conservative majority, Republicans oppose Citizens United 80 percent to 18 percent, according to the poll. Democrats oppose 83 percent to 13 percent, and independents, 71 percent to 22 percent. Among self-described liberals, conservatives, and moderates, 80 percent say the decision should be overturned.

“I would have assumed that by now there would have been a more partisan context to it,” said Trevor Potter, a Citizens United critic and former Federal Election Commission chairman who serves as president of the Campaign Legal Center in Washington. “This one is not seen in partisan context, just with overwhelming disapproval. The reason, I think, is that most people don’t think that corporations and unions have First Amendment rights to engage in campaign activity.”

Needs more attention

Since the end of World War II, the world has grown steadily more globalized. Trade has grown faster than global gross domestic product itself. Supply chains have lengthened. Companies have become more multinational. The rate of globalization reached a fever pitch in the 1990s and early 2000s.

But then the financial crisis hit. Trade plummeted in 2009, falling faster than GDP, only to rebound a year later. But since then, trade has stopped growing as a percentage of output, the way it had in the past. A few years isn't necessarily enough to establish a trend, but the slowdown in trade is unprecedented in the postwar era.
...
Occupations that are more exposed to global competition experience greater job losses when globalization expands. In addition, the dumping of Chinese and other developing-country labor onto the global labor markets probably pushed down labor’s share of income, boosting capital owners at the expense of workers. A slowdown in globalization will put the brakes on both of these processes, holding down inequality and slowing the rate at which workers are displaced from their jobs.

In other words, the slowdown of globalization may bring just the relief that beleaguered American, Japanese and European workers need. Economists who tell you that trade is always a net benefit overlook the pain it can inflict on substantial groups of people within individual countries. These distributional effects of trade can be so severe on those who lose out that they can swamp the GDP benefit that trade provides. If this has been happening in rich countries, then a slowdown in trade is actually good news

Forget Syria

Iraq would be receptive to requests by Russia to conduct reconnaissance flights in Iraqi airspace to spy on Islamic State militants, an Iraqi defense ministry spokesman said on Monday, as Moscow explores a deeper military role in the country.

“If Russia needs to participate in aircraft reconnaissance flights it can make a formal request to the Iraqi government and there will be no objection in my opinion,” the spokesman, Brigadier General Tahseen Ibrahim, said in a statement.

Mr. Ibrahim’s comments come the day after Iraq announced plans for an intelligence-sharing committee with Syria, Russia and Iran. The pact solidifies cooperation between the four countries in their fight against Islamic State.

It's pretty disgusting

Why precisely now, after four years of war and over 200,000 killed, have tens of thousands of Sunni and Christian Syrians decided to leave what was once Syria?

The answer is that after the nuclear agreement reached between Iran and the world powers in July, the Shi'ite axis of Iran, Syrian President Bashar Assad and Hezbollah became the favored side for the United States which signaled to the Syrians that Assad is not going anywhere and that the war was not going to end.

This altered political dynamic, that spurred the masses of Syrians to leave their country, is not necessarily bad news for Israel.

I left a message to that effect earlier this week. Not sure is "Contact Us" got the message.

I'm going to the Vancouver Film Festival.

And I want to spend less time online from now on.

cheers,

online and I feel a lot saner. 'The world as we find it' seems to be going into overdrive and the outrage and divisions online just takes me to a place I see no point in going to as it just keeps the insanity raging.. I will miss your Morning Greens but I sure understand spending less time online. I've been a political junkie for a decade or more and it does nothing to alter or improve anything. I am also in a position where I need to spend most of my time on working at basic survival, making a living, in this mad world. So off I go to hustle and toil among the mad dogs of business who will eat us if we don't learn how to play their game. The wolf's are knocking at our door and we need a new door that works.

I feel I can do more in my local community where it seems like ordinary people are taking on and pushing back from outside the political realm. Stop Demolishing Portland activists saved two giant Sequoia trees from being taken out by the developers last week. They powers that be are cutting down trees in our local park Mt.Tabor and emptying and decommissioning the 3 reservoirs it contains. Meanwhile Nestle's is threatening our water and our corrupt elected Democratic officials, say this is inevitable, and endless growth is necessary. I need a break from the endless useless outrage from all sides online and concentrate on keeping my head above water in the real viscous dog eat dog world that I find I must live in.

Does this sound familiar?

The President talked about learning “the lessons of the past” from interventions such as the overthrow of Saddam Hussein in Iraq, and Qaddafi in Libya.

In Libya, Obama said the United States “joined an international coalition under a U.N. mandate to prevent a slaughter.”

“Even as we helped the Libyan people bring an end to the reign of a tyrant,” Obama continued, “our coalition could have, and should have, done more to fill a vacuum left behind.”

“In such efforts, the United States will always do our part,” Obama promised.

The forever war

ISLAMABAD—
Insurgent officials and Afghan media confirmed Monday evening the Taliban has seized control of Kunduz after staging a pre-dawn well-coordinated offensive against the northern city.
The insurgents also have released hundreds of prisoners after taking control of the detention facility.

You know what? I think this happened during the lunar eclipse.
And let's not forget.

In eastern Afghanistan Sunday, authorities said hundreds of Islamic State militants staged a coordinated pre-dawn attack against key security outposts in Nangarhar province. Afghan forces forced the extremists to retreat.
Officials said it was the first major attack by Islamic State militants against Afghan forces, coming after months of reports that the extremist group is becoming more powerful in Afghanistan.
