Too many years of analysis to count how, when, I learned that. Mostly from my days living in England, when my British friends would crack up laughing at the invented word. Doesn't exist.
IMHO, from my own experience, it's a need to say "fuck you" to someone, something. Too much of a waste of energy. Be grateful for whatever you've learned, and what ever brought you to where you are now.

I look at people just disappearing from TOP as a sort of Liberal rapture. The left-behinds sense the place is a lot quieter and frankly, incredibly boring. I pop over occasionally to see if there is one interesting thing to read and there never is, just stories of Hillary wiping the brows of the ill or ferrying children across rivers on her back, interspersed with "Isn't Trump Stoopit?" stories.

Exactly! There will be the usual ridicule of those announcing their departure, which lends the (kindergarten bully) patina of the 'in' group so useful in propaganda/'social engineering'/trolling to appeal to the susceptible - but when people just softly and silently vanish away and the place empties out with comment/visitor numbers dropping, there's not much that can be convincingly done about the indications that they have become a relatively small group temporarily filled out with a number of paid trolls, driving off people who have better places to go and better things to do.
That place used to consist predominately of Bernie supporters.

A tin labeled 'coffee' may be a can of worms or pathology identified by a lack of empathy/willingness to harm others to achieve personal desires.
I went into my account at top and deleted all of my emails. Then I went through and deleted all of my diaries I didn't care about. I cleaned out my streams, groups, blog roll, and everything else that was in my reach. The only thing that remains is my hotlist and diaries I wrote that I'm not ready to throw into the trash. All of that info and stuff is mine, and I don't want them to have access to anything that belongs to me. After I was done with that, I logged out and left.
Like doc, I'll go back to read maybe 2/3 times a month, but I never log in. I also never respond or contribute to that place in anyway. The most they'll ever get from me is a view and not many of them. IF I feel a need to push back top or the Hillarybots there, I do it in twitter and facebook.
Do not GBCW. Don't give them the satisfaction.

I consider it a digital diversion for idiots who find pleasure in obtaining items of virtual value...
I'm not sure why they spend time walking and driving through town collecting them unless possibly walking for the exercise...

I actually don't care all that much about achieving anything, but it's like a little reward for getting off my butt and going somewhere to walk. I shouldn't need that, but it works as an extra incentive for me to get outside - at least while it holds my interest.
I know there are many people much more into it and probably spending actual money, but that's not what the husband and I do. It's just an incentive for us to go walk the park or go walk somewhere we haven't been before.
Like anything else - it's just a tool - it can be good or it can be really bad for people who use it to walk off of cliffs. But my feeling is, those people were likely going to stumble off a cliff one day anyway.

If you've been anywhere for 10 years (even a blog), you're familiar with lots of names, and you know all the inside jokes, and you feel those people behind the screen deserve an explanation about why you're leaving. And then it turns out that your reason for leaving is that they're being nasty assholes, and they show that to you one more time. If you're up to it, write about it here. I bet there are several amongst us (I'm one) who feel a real sadness at how abruptly the place that once felt so comfortable now feels so toxic. And, in the midst of the hatefest, are those who you really like, who are trying to ride it out. Posting rarely, and only in safe diaries (stories???). There are others on this site who feel as you do (like me). Let's talk it out and get it out of our systems. I don't think I'll ever feel safe there, as I once did. But some anonymous soul invested in a lifetime membership for me and I can lurk there forever without having to deal with ads. Yay!
