Light and Dark

Open Thread Image.jpg

This Wednesday is the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere, the shortest day and longest night of the year. The sun has made it's march south, and now pauses before it climbs back up in the sky. Days will grow longer in the endless cycle of light and dark. Tonight is the start of Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights that lasts for eight days and nights in honor of a 2,000-year-old miracle in which light won out over darkness.

Album of the Week - 12-17-22

Afternoon folks!

Another week, another batch of albums for you guys. There's a compilation of Nappy Brown's earlier days doing r&b tunes, piano player Mose Allison has a live album and another piano player, Marcia Ball follows with a studio album. We've got a late 60's Butterfield Blues Band album and a Ten Years After album from later in their career - kind of a departure from their earlier albums. There's two albums by Richard Thompson and an album by prog-rockers Be Bop Deluxe (which the gods of copyright seem to have chosen to block a goodly chunk of).

Enjoy!

Welcome to Saturday's Potluck - 12-17-2022

“Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist.”
Pablo Picasso

It has been one of those weeks. Sunday morning the potential 1 to 3 inches of snow turned into 12 inches of heavy tree branch breaking snow. Followed by power interruptions. Call from a neighbor, plans were already being made when to grade the driveways - Monday. By noon low voltage problems, prompted a discussion with the power company to determine if we were part of the known outages. Yes, our cooperative was answering calls with a real person to ask pertinent questions and obtain detailed information.

Friday Night Photos Big White Bird Edition

Happy Friday everyone. Post any photos, memes, or music you like.

When the temps start to drop and winter closes in the migratory birds head south for the winter. Many of them make Santee Lakes their home until they head back north in the spring. These American White Pelicans are the largest of all the species that spend their winter here. With warm water, plenty of fish, and lots of space to hang out, what more could a Pelican ask for.

Open Thread - 12-16-22 - A Most Joyous Holiday Season

What the world needs, right now, coming into this holiday season is, less war, less pestilence, less famine, less hate. The world needs more peace, more love, more economic justice, and less Useless Parasitic Eaters. Right now.

Would it not behoove the world to shed itself of that which causes those blights that threaten its existence?

Shed itself of that which, in light of peak oil and climate change, is a major cause of both maladies. Those that fly private jets to all points of the world. Those that flaunt a lavish lifestyle while calling for austerity for all we Bob Cratchits and Tiny Tims of the world. Those that control the largest consumers of oil and the biggest cause of climate change, the militaries. Those that point fingers at the common folk of the world as they rape the planet. Those that eat kobe steak while suggesting the world eat insects. Those that use their wealth to stomp on the necks of their misplaced ideation of the great unwashed. Those that want the world as their oyster at our expense. Those that want far less competition for the remaining resources that they see as their own. Those that want it all because they consider themselves the crown of creation, as they sit upon their piles of ill-gotten wealth.

We, the world, need less Klaus Schwab, less Yuval Harari, less Bill Gates, less WEF.
