WE NEVER FORGET: December 24, 1913 - The Italian Hall Massacre, Calumet, Michigan

Up above the strikers stood Annie Clemenc,
girl leader of the miners.
She was not the usual militant Annie Clemenc.
She was saying a prayer for the children.

Christmas Eve December 24, 2015

This morning I woke up thinking about the Italian Hall Massacre. I thought of Annie Clemenc and I remembered the miners and their families who preserved through the great Michigan Copper Strike of 1913-14.

Let us always honor their sacrifice and NEVER FORGET:

OT 12-24-15: Folk Music, Protest Music

I might have been too young for the folk boom. When some people had tuned out rock n roll in favor of Pete Seeger et al I was still listening to The Orlons...and liking what I heard. Later I found out there was a "Cuban Missile Crisis". I missed it. I was too busy with "He's a Rebel", "Do You Love Me", "Green Onions" and "James, Hold the Ladder Steady". "If I Had a Hammer" was on the charts, though, and I did like it but in a musical way rather than as a cultural lifestyle.

Christie links transgender kids with terrorism

NJ. Governor: Transgender? Terrorism!!

A California woman asked Gov. Christie about California's 2013 law which allows transgender and gender non-conforming students to use the restroom which most closely aligns with their gender identity.

Christie responded by trotting out his transphobia: He said that life was simpler in New Jersey...

Hellraisers Journal: Mother Jones-"Among the comrades we extol, Thy name shall blazon on the scroll."

She was fearless of every danger,
She hated that which was wrong;
She never gave up fighting
Until her breath was gone.

From the Appeal to Reason: A Poem for Mother Jones by Ellis B. Harris

From the Appeal of December 16, 1905:

MOTHER JONES
-----

Here's to you, Mother, Mother Jones.
Foe of the sabre,
When Justice, reigning, Wrong dethrones,
Helped by Love's labor,
Among the comrades we extol
Thy name shall blazon on the scroll,
In memory of one great soul,
Dear, kindly neighbor.

Good morning, 99%'ers! I am going to be traveling today, so I will not be covering this in real time. Please feel free to talk about whatever you wish.

My husband's 98 year old aunt died one week ago. She had been ready to go for about two years and died peacefully in her sleep early Wednesday morning. We all should be so lucky.

Anti-trans ballot initiative fails to make ballot in California

A group called Privacy for All announced yesterday that it had failed in its attempt to qualify the so-called Personal Privacy Protection Act for the November 2016 ballot.

The PPPA would have forced transgender and gender nonconforming people to use public facilities reserved for our birth sex.

Anti-trans activists needed to get 365800 signatures to place the initiative on the ballot but fell short. They are not saying by how much.
