Saturday Open Thread - 10/12/24: Odds and Ends

Time for some nonsense and some solid news and current events contributions from my friends on the site.

Let us start with the nonsense, to get it out my system and off my ass, as you will see.

I have commented many times about about clothing made of 100% cotton, linen, silk, and wool. I advocate it. And yet, gotta baby it when you do score some quality stuff.

Take those undies I bought. 100% cotton, like I have bought maybe 40 years. Wore them. Dreamy comfort. Then, after washing them, I dried them in the dryer, like I have for 50 years. Suddenly, I find myself in what feels like a girdle. Sitting in court, bound like some woman from the 50s trying to get attention by forcing a waistline to be what it really isn't.

A cotton fail!!!

One more song about cotton sung by one of the greatest voices the US ever produced, despite he was a "dirty commie" according to the MSM and government at the time:(admission: I can't listen to this without crying. I am overwhelmed by everything in the film clip. Music, personality, history, truth.)

*This came to mind as I spoke with a new client, a black woman in her 70s, that happened to pick cotton on Dad's field right along side me when we were kids. It cuts fingers to the bone to pull out the cotton pods. Go slow, be careful. Her daughter had no idea what we were talking about. Progress!

As always, when I put my OT together, it is Friday night, knowing something will happen as I sleep.

I will have sweet dreams, and awaken to the nightmare of war, and more war as we comment Saturday morning.

Quality of life might suddenly dwindle, but I would live to think we will survive if we sort of think ahead.

The morning headlines say the death count in Florida is 17. My heart goes out to their families and friends.
Our family friend is safe, but it remains to be seen if his home was destroyed. It remains to be seen when our own soryang can go home.

Good morning...

A cool one here. Had to wear a jacket at Trade Day. Got some grocery shopping done as well. Gas was $2.35 in town today. The cheapest I've seen in a while. Might be a tax suspension after Helene to help get folks back on their feet.

Cut worms got a few of my broccoli plants while we were gone. Bought some replacements today, and will get them in the ground this evening.

Looks like a big war will be avoided at least until after the election, but really no telling what will happen. I'm still looking for western mischief during the BRICS+ meeting in less than a couple of weeks.

The Duran is saying Ukraine has lost favor given the Israeli aggression in Lebanon. We'll see.

We are in a heatwave until Thursday. Tuesday's high is predicted to be 93 deg., Wednesday's is 79 deg. Oddly, 0% chance of rain.
Damn cut worms! At least they know to eat a healthy diet, amirite?
Gas prices are at $2.70, on average, so Alabama has the State where Big Oil rules beaten. Go, Alabama!
I have had an uneasy feeling about a war being declared and elections being suspended. I will be so glad when the votes are counted, not that the results will improve our lives.
Thanks for bringing us a video to watch. The Duran seems to be right and well ahead of the media routinely.

Is it just me?
She would do well to place her hands in her lap while sitting, and by her side when talking. Some innocent person might get to close and get a tooth knocked out.
How in the hell did we get stuck with her heading the ticket?
Caveat: criticism of her should not be taken as support for Trump.

She didn't even make it to the 2020 Iowa caucus. And Iowa Democratic caucus participants aren't exactly the most discerning of voters. Not Trump won in 2020 and the bottom of a ticket is hardly ever relevant.

Obama and Hillary like her. After securing the 2024 nomination for the mentally addled one, the Democratic elites executed a switcheroo that in the past would have outraged voters. Would have been harder to pull of if Trump weren't still leading the GOP.g

a permanent in with a large number of the multibillionaires. A large portion of them would have struggled to become multimillionaires without the economic policies of Hill-Bill-Barack. They want more of the same and are happy to pay for hoodwinking voters. The other team favors a different set of multibillionaires invested in screwing over the people.

How she passed the California state bar exam is a mystery to me. In the 70s,80s, and 90s, it was the most difficult bar exam in the US.

This really brought a smile to my face

Omigod! How could they possibly vote for an anti-genocide candidate!

(Hint to those who really want to argue the point: if a vote for Stein were really a vote for Trump, would we be living in a democracy? Of course not.)

What's important, you see, is that you vote for a historically-bad continuation of historically-bad foreign policy. It's like Kamala Harris herself said: the Biden administration is a transformative administration. (The problem, of course, is one of what sort of transformation we are talking about, here. Let's start with the United States' vast reduction in standing among the community of nation-states.)

Last weekend I briefly met with Justin Filip. Filip is running for Congress in Oregon's 4th Congressional District. Of course you haven't heard of Filip! Not only does he labor under a media blackout, he's being censored on social media. It all started with COVID, of course, but it didn't stop there, so now you have ham-fisted attempts to censor social media across the board.

So what's the panic about?

Vote for the woman who never won a delegate in any Dem primary and who is in the position she's in because Obama threatened to use the Twenty-Fifth Amendment on Biden. Do it to "save democracy." And so we are being asked to vote for one of Biden's appointees instead of Biden.

For those with no historical memory: Hitler was appointed, and by a "lesser-evil" candidate at that.

But let's be clear here. Dictator or democracy? It's dictator, and the dictator is already in power right fkn now. Democracy would be legitimizing the Green Party instead of having them censored on social media.

In my mind, voting for Stein is my personal expression of my preference for the office of President. No more, no less.
It is interesting to discuss democracy, even if it is a theoretical goal, and stands no chance of being thhe reality.

Pretty bad when the crapification has hit cotton undies! What has become of America? I wonder if gas or electric dryer makes difference (besides GAS yellowing whites) with our brave new cotton? Air dry is best, but not outside with undies.

@lotlizard Profit margins do not allow for time, labor costs, and fast-track assembly and shipping, no doubt. We can't have nice things.
I have also noticed a slight shrinkage in cotton clothing, but nothing as extreme as that package of Hanes panties!
Along those lines, I just read an explanation of food product codes. Organic is 9xxx. It means, there is limited chemical usage in prossessing when the code begins with a 9.
Limited is better than unlimited, and it is really, really "organic" and good for you.

preparation is a good approach

today, started both gensets and ran for an hour or so
(had been about 6 months), changed the oil in the tractor,
moving wood onto the covered deck and generally getting
ready for whatever comes our way. Can't control the geopolitical
madness, but can try to secure the little perimeter here. Now it's

Damn! What time is dinner?

@QMS Prep for weird weather is essential. Period. We got caught slightly off guard by Tropical Storm Beryl. Its' severity was underestimated. My office went dark for the first time in a weather event since 1986. The outage came in 2 spurts. Before food thawed, the lights came on for 8 hours after the first outage. That kept the food ok until they came on again after the second outage. We have a propane stove, a propane grill, and we had all equipment maintained, all vehicles gassed up, although the gas cans had not been filled.
When I retire and sell the office property, I will invest in a generator.
Milton has pushed Helene to the back of the bus, hasn't it?
I read that First Responders in NC have seen so many dead bodies floating by, caught in trees, and on and on, that they are suffering from mental health issues. Those folks will never be the same and never forget what the witnessed.
So far, Milton destroyed property, but the population came out of it fairly unscathed.
Damage assessments to property in NC, TN, and the areas of WY that were destroyed by wild fires is being done by the same company, a company owned by Vanguard and Blackrock. I expect that all areas atop minerals, such as lithium in NC, or gold in WY, to be pronounced forever unlivable, but capable of being mined.

But how many more civilians need to be slaughtered before Iran steps up and defends its allies? Israel bombs Syria at will and what is Russia doing about it? Hell they bombed close or on a Russian base and still nothing happened. The building they bombed was full of humanitarian aid that Iran had just sent there.

Hospitals are off limits and yet Israel has destroyed almost every hospital in Gaza, it’s bombing hospitals in Lebanon and now this Iranian hospital.

I hope this message gets heard.

I figure you weren't born in the time of the Cuban Crisis. We were close. Very close. I remember it well.

Hey, Ned how about making Israel comply with all the UN resolutions that it has been ignoring for decades? Israel’s poo stinks too.

We’ve been living under the sword of Damocles for 3 years, but no one has loaded the planes yet. America is doing another nuclear war game just outside Russia again. Russia has had its nuclear forces on alert for 3 years because they never know if the games are cover for a nuclear attack.
