Might be a good idea to show JtC how much we appreciate his work and this site. I've got my gift winging its way to him as I write, and hope those of you able to help will consider doing the same!

It looks like the Thumbs Up feature was causing the glitch. It's currently disabled. I'll get it working again as soon as possible.
Thanks folks.

The current working assumption appears to be that our Shroedinger's Cat system is still alive. But what if we all suspect it's not, and the real problem is we just can't bring ourselves to open the box?
I thought it was my system. Checked ping, kind of high but the same was true of other sites.
Rebooted route. rebooted cable modem. tried another PC. Concluded it must be your server.
Did you change your html code? BTW, are you using javascript, php or something else?
Just starting to learn about web development, myself. My professional work was on embedded systems. Although sometimes they had a web interface, someone else, an expert, always did that part. My part was overall design, control algorithms, and non-web implementation.
BTW: I would not have committed the 737 MAX atrocity. However, I would not accept $9 an hour pay either. That's equivalent to less than the 85 cents an hour I made in High School as a yard boy loading lumber and roofing into pickup trucks.

I've seen lots of changes. What doesn't change is people. Same old hairless apes.

That, in its essence, is fascism--ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power. -- Franklin D. Roosevelt --
@Dr. John Carpenter
from emails from sites that I've been subscribed to after they've become Impeachment and/or Russia Russia! mongers.
When I fill out the box on why I'm unsubscribing I now tell them all "The Russians made me do this".
@aliasalias
I suspect that it can be pretty tough to get a full snapshot on a live site, but I also noticed a number of comments and articles with zeroed-out counts. Several I know which I upfisted earlier in the day before noticing any issues on the site.
EDIT: On checking I see that all count history has been cleared in fixing the bug. C'est la vie! I appreciate your locating and squashing the bug so quickly @JtC. Your site commenting system is the best of any I visit regularly.
and noticed my 'likes' of others' comments were gone. Not that it matters but thanks for getting the site back and running.

most of the day yesterday to no avail. I think I've found the bug now though.
Thanks g.
Thank you for all your efforts!

It's certainly appreciated.

site seems to be running well now
At least on my end. Who needs a thumbs up (unless you're a gladiator)?
Thanks again!

Right you are...
although my thumbs up did come in handy back in the late 60s during my hitchhiking days.

Relieved in a way

No...
It was a database issue.
PHP, CSS, and javascript.
Thanks for the info!

My homer pigeon is on her way, she just sent me
a note that she experiences strong headwinds from the Western front with heavy pushbacks against all the downward turned thumbs.
Oh, captain, my captain, the dead poets of this deeply appreciated blog have turned all their thumbs up and revived the captain.
I am still learning these intertube thingies

Gracias amigo, pesky critters, those bugs, especially when
they suddenly manifest out of nowhere. Thanks again for all you do.

I blame Russia.
Well someone had to.
Idolizing a politician is like believing the stripper really likes you.
Obviously...
Putin is interfering in our voting process.
Now we know why Putin is so popular
in Russia. His supporters have been cheating. They've been giving him TWO thumbs up!
We need to export American democracy to Russia: One ruble, one vote.
This is what I've been doing when unsubscribing
When I fill out the box on why I'm unsubscribing I now tell them all "The Russians made me do this".
I notice now ALL my comments have no recs showing
and noticed my 'likes' of others' comments were gone. Not that it matters but thanks for getting the site back and running.
Collateral damage...
Sorry about that. The Thumbs Up count will tally going forward however.
Pretty sure we lost a bit of the history there

Proof positive
I don't think there's too much question about what's wrong. Somebody is working from afar...

I think I'm beginning to understand now. It wasn't Al Gore who invented the Internet. It was Putin!!!

Actually, there are some things you might not know about Mr. Al Gore and a certain Semyon Mogilevich........
