We die. That may be the meaning of life. But we do language. That may be the measure of our lives. ~ Toni Morrison

Ray Strong, 1934, WPA: admired so much by FDR, he hung Strong's Golden Gate Bridge in the White House

~

The systematic looting of language can be recognized by the tendency of its users to forgo its nuanced, complex, mid-wifery properties for menace and subjugation. Oppressive language does more than represent violence; it is violence; does more than represent the limits of knowledge; it limits knowledge. Whether it is obscuring state language or the faux-language of mindless media; whether it is the proud but calcified language of the academy or the commodity driven language of science; whether it is the malign language of law-without-ethics, or language designed for the estrangement of minorities, hiding its racist plunder in its literary cheek – it must be rejected, altered and exposed. It is the language that drinks blood, laps vulnerabilities, tucks its fascist boots under crinolines of respectability and patriotism as it moves relentlessly toward the bottom line and the bottomed-out mind. Sexist language, racist language, theistic language – all are typical of the policing languages of mastery, and cannot, do not permit new knowledge or encourage the mutual exchange of ideas.

Caught here in your limestone cave,
lost in a limbo of slow water torture,
for you, each day is night always.
Condemned to circle contours of a god’s
point of view, pale swimmers
in this light you are a deck of cards
shuffled by a pro. I back away,
& you come forth like falling
leaves. False prophecy of this
hour, when I come closer, you ease
away. How do you see so deeply
in darkness? I wonder if you know
the shape of gone, of never been born.

~ Blind Fish, Yusef Komunyakaa

"The “jumpers” reminded us that one day we will all face only one choice and that is how we will die, not how we will live." Chris Hedges on 9/11

Some posters seem to get annoyed if they can't Alice in Wonderland words, if they are expected to use them in accordance with their respective dictionary definitions, or some reasonable approximation thereof. On the flip side, some will attack without knowing the dictionary definition of the meaning of the words in the post that they are attacking.

(To be clear, I'm referring to posters on other boards, not this one.)

Then again, there's just no accounting for posters, is there? (-;

from Toni Morrison's nobel lecture linked above.

In her country children have bitten their tongues off and use bullets instead to iterate the voice of speechlessness, of disabled and disabling language, of language adults have abandoned altogether as a device for grappling with meaning, providing guidance, or expressing love. But she knows tongue-suicide is not only the choice of children. It is common among the infantile heads of state and power merchants whose evacuated language leaves them with no access to what is left of their human instincts for they speak only to those who obey, or in order to force obedience.

I am ashamed to say that my so-called uneducated son told me about Morrison some days ago and I had no memory or clue about her.

Tongue-suicide, I have to chew on that expression to grasp it.

Thank you smiley7, I am always appreciative about your educational OTs.

Have all a good weekend and enjoy something ... Smile

you the very best of luck and news down in the land of the medicos. My ingrained patterns and habits are already outlining and commandeering my day as I consider how to squeeze some routine breakers into my routing. Maybe if I sped up process x I can bag some extra time for y or z or even something completely different? Do I have an app for that?

Feeling jaded yet again and wondering what the hell the condition could have to do with beautiful jade so I jump to the web and the answer is, oddly enough, nada. Something about an old tired Norwegian mare. I wonder if it was a nightmare. Silly, of course it was, look at the effect.

Have a great weekend interruptus and travel safe to the digression and back.

Clinton II woman assumed bat form, flapped into the Manhattan jail, transformed into Cthulhu, then hung Jeffrey Epstein with a belt made of petrified pizzas used to molest the children in the basements. Then she re-batted, and flapped back out. So, the deed is done. Just thought people would want to know. The Q-tips will no doubt be along soon to provide further details.

Dry here. No rain in two or more weeks and the ground is parched. Watered the new chestnut trees this AM after Trade Day. Been pouring a gallon on each tree per week during the dry times. Seem to be doing fine...good leaf cover anyway. Still have some water in the cisterns for the garden. Rapid clothes drying weather...about an hour on the line is all it takes.

The big fence progresses, but looks like a couple more weeks till completion. That's two big projects for the summer almost done....new well house and new 9 ft fence....have not worked this much building things in a number of years. Kinda like writing ... it is more fun to have done it than it is to do it....especially in this summer heat.

I hope your day goes well and you get good news and test results. I'm going to get several test in November this year. Found a CAC (calcium) scan in Cartersville about 1.5 hours away for $70...should give heart health info in a non-invasive way. Curious to see how my lo carb diet over the last couple of years has changed my blood chemistry.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Always meaningful stuff here on Saturday.

I have not been online much in the last couple of weeks. Dry here too Lookout. We have not had rain in over a month. There has been rain all around us several times. Thankfully my husband's rain capture system holding 2700 gallons has been keeping the garden alive. It is very low now, but a slight chance of rain is in the forecast for this week.

Last weekend one of my son's internet friends of 5 years flew from New Jersey to Texas to visit. Pretty cool. He looks like a young Will Smith. His parents come from Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic so he is actually Hispanic. Very polite kid. Family is wealthy. My kids had a blast with him. Fed him lots of home-cooked food. He loved all of the pets. He said his folks give him everything but won't let him have a pet. He slept in the shipping container music room. It's an interesting extension of the Internet world we live in.

Gardening. I water every morning pre-dawn. It is beautiful still at that time. And I have been planting planting planting. It's crazy, but you have to plant when it is really hot for the fall garden. Peanuts, corn, popcorn, winter squash, pumpkins, tomatoes, long beans, malabar spinach, beets, swiss chard, kohlrabi, and about to plant sunflowers, jubilee watermelon, and birdhouse gourds.

And my breakfast is always fresh figs from the tree in the garden.

Have to stop here and go check on my better half. He works like a maniac and then gets a bit of heatstroke (affected by the heat whatever it is). And he is diabetic so we always have to make sure he is not low.

Anyway. Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!!! I-m so happy

Ambush!

A patrol car was struck by a falling bear in northern California last weekend, causing the vehicle to crash and explode.

Authorities said a Humboldt county sheriff’s deputy was driving on State Route 96 on 3 August, answering a report of a drug overdose in the community of Orleans, when the bear fell or jumped onto the car, apparently from a steep embankment.

The bear smashed the hood and windshield. The patrol car hit an embankment, rolled onto its side and burst into flames.

The deputy managed to escape without serious injury.

The fire was contained to about half an acre but the car was gutted.

However, the California department of transportation stated: “Don’t worry, the bear also fled the scene.”

Hope your drive into the netherlands was cool and productive and your tests results are to your liking. Thinking good thoughts. Things are warming up here and the wind has started. The season is changing. Leaves now are falling on the trails in the Pogonip. The air smells divine of bay and oak. Visitors here now bring a welcome break from news gathering and meetings. Be well...
