Good Morning!

Welcome to Tuesday’s Open Thread. Today's edition is being brought to you by kid logic. The kind of logical connections kids make about the world around them based on the information they have at the time. Sometimes they get it right, and sometimes they don't. But even when they get it wrong, there is a kind of logic there.

Building Very Strange Castles in the Sky

The next time you find yourself in a room full of six year olds, ask them what they think happens to all those teeth the tooth fairy collects. You might be surprised with the answers. I certainly was when This American Life went to an elementary school in New Jersey and asked that very question.

TAL:What do you think the tooth fairy does with all of these teeth that she's collecting?

Child 1: Maybe she gives it to the people without teeth.

TAL: Like who?

Child 1: Old people.

TAL: What do you think she does with all these teeth that she ends up taking?

Child 2: I know! In a faraway land way up in the clouds, there's a town that she makes castles and stuff.

TAL: She makes things out of the teeth?

Child 2: Mm-hmm.

Child 3: I really think she just likes to collect teeth and make things out of them.

TAL: Like what kind of stuff?

Child 4: Lots of stuff. Makes tooth house, tooth trophy, and a tooth desk.

TAL: How many teeth do you think it takes to make a tooth house?

Child 4: Yeah, well, like 100.

TAL: Why wouldn't she just make the house out of bricks like everyone else?

Child 5: Because no one doesn't have brick teeth.

Walking a Tightrope

Having conversations with children about difficult topics is something we rarely plan for because they usually come up when we least expect it. The best we can do is break it down in a way so children can understand. The following is an excerpt of one such conversation between a father and his daughter, courtesy of This American Life.

Well, it all began at Christmas two years ago when my daughter was four-years-old. And it was the first time that she had ever asked about what did this holiday mean. And so I explained to her that this was celebrating the birth of Jesus. And she wanted to know more about that, and we went out and bought a kid's Bible and had these readings at night. She loved them-- wanted to know everything about Jesus.

So we read a lot about his birth and about his teaching. And she would ask constantly what that phrase was. And I would explain to her that it was, do unto others as you would have them do unto you. And we would talk about those old words and what that all meant.

And then one day we were driving past a big church, and out front was an enormous crucifix. She said, who is that? And I guess I'd never really told that part of the story, so I had to sort of, yeah, well, that's Jesus, and I forgot to tell you the ending. Yeah. Well, you know, he ran afoul of the Roman government. This message that he had was so radical and unnerving to the prevailing authorities of the time that they had to kill him. They came to the conclusion that he would have to die. That message was too troublesome.

It was about a month later after that Christmas. We'd gone through the whole story of what Christmas meant. It was mid-January, and her preschool celebrates the same holidays as the local schools, so on Martin Luther King Day, I knocked off work that day and I decided we'd play, and I take her out to lunch. And we were sitting there and right on the table where we happened to plop down was the art section of the local newspaper.

And there, big as life, was a huge drawing by like a 10-year-old kid from the local schools of Martin Luther King. And she said, who's that? And I said, well, as it happens, that's Martin Luther King, and he's why you're not in school today. So we're celebrating his birthday. This is the day we celebrate his life. And she said, so who was he? I said, well, he was a preacher. And she looks up at me and goes, for Jesus? And I said yeah. Yeah, actually he was, but there was another thing that he was really famous for, which is that he had a message.

And you're trying to say this to a four-year-old. This is the first time they ever hear anything so you're just very careful about how you phrase everything. So I said, well, yeah, he was a preacher and he had a message. She said, what was his message? And I said, he said that you should treat everybody the same no matter what they look like. She thought about that for a minute, and she said, well, that's what Jesus said.

And I said, yeah, I guess it is. You know, I never thought of it that way, but yeah. And that is sort of like do unto others as you would have them do unto you. And she thought for a minute and looked at me and said, did they kill him, too?

When Kids Do The Unexpected

Despite the subject of this video, I am not a fan of talent shows that highlight kids with big voices. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure these kids are all very talented, but let's face it, as amazing as their voices are, after awhile they all begin to sound the same. Well, everyone but Courtney Hadwin. Winner of the "Golden Buzzer Award" during auditions for America's Got Talent, she not only wowed the panel and the audience, she exploded the internet with her performance. Love her style, or not, she's an original. Awkward, authentic, and channeling another place and time while performing, she's absolutely mesmerizing to watch.

Well, that about wraps things up for this week's edition.

I'll bet you were surprised too! I know I was. It was like she just disappeared with the music and became someone else. Have to admire her ability of just going out there and doing it the way she wanted and not the way she thought the judges wanted.

Have a great day!

I'm actually old enough to remember my Mother watching "House Party". The panel with the kids was my favorite part. And yes, he did have a knack at getting kids to say some pretty funny stuff. A goldmine of anecdotes, you always knew something good was coming when he asked "How did your Mom and Dad meet and fall in love?"

to this day, thank you.

Recalling the new hula-hoop times.

Working with little ones, we do hear the funniest and touching things, especially when riding up the lift.

Well, i paused to view youtube clips of funny things children say and got lost surfing and smiling.

Young ones have that fresh open minded perspective that typically sours with age.

Bucky Fuller said something like -
Child goes to school and wants to understand UNIVERSE. Teacher says no we have to start at the beginning, A, B, C ... and we never get back to the whole.

Hope you all have a good day filled with child like wonder.

@QMS and agree on most counts, but the essence of coding is logic, pure logic similar to symbolic logic aka mathematical logic. Not everyone's cup of tea, but for geeky kids, it can be fun, creative, powerful and even liberating. Seriously. Smile

I never saw the patterns, or the logic. But you know what? While I'll probably never be good at that kind of logical reasoning, I've always had a knack for observing and asking questions which has provided me with some wonderful friendships. I don't know why, but I somehow always manage to get people to tell me some of the quirkiest and endearing stories about their lives!

Love the quote. Always thought we approach teaching children more as a kind of indoctrination rather than guiding them as they explore the world. One of the many reasons I decided not to go into teaching after finishing up my training in the classroom. Still enjoy talking to children though. And I'm lucky to get that opportunity working everyday at the store.

stories like the tooth fairy. Full disclosure: I was guilty of doing it because I thought it was a thing parents should do. And what would my kids think when they went to school/ play and heard other kids talking about Santa/tooth fairy/Easter bunny?

Still, if you tell a crazy story to a kid, it’s no wonder equally crazy answers come back. Is it “kid logic” or adult nonsense?

@Lily O Lady

When I was doing my student teaching years ago, I would recruit my boyfriends nieces to participate in cognitive development experiments where I would set objects down on the table and ask them questions. They are developing so quickly at that age, that the results can differ in a matter of months. Children have always fascinated me in that way.

As far as your question about creating stories for children, maybe it's a little of both?

figured it out on my own.
It didn't help Santa's case when I stumbled upon the new bicycle hidden in the garage the day before Christmas.
I quickly closed the door and ran to my room praying Santa wouldn't take the bike back as punishment for my peeking.
Then it dawned on me. "Hey, wait a minute!"

No, I guess it didn't help Santa's case. Were you disappointed that there wasn't any "magical" element to the world that you once thought existed? I remember being very sad when I found out that fairies and Santa Claus didn't really exist. Made the world seem a little less colorful.

By writing stories as a kid. Interestingly enough, Alice in Wonderland was one of my favorite stories to read, and as a kid, I created my own derivative story of her adventure.

That helped with the graying of the world and the compulsion of adults to try and put all the square pegs in round holes. That's why I like this community so much. We are all a bunch of square pegs who have liberated our selves from the round holes.

@Anja Geitz In 8th grade, we were tasked with adapting part of an existing story into one scene of a play.

I chose the tea party from Alice in Wonderland.

My English teacher returned my work with the quote, "Great writer!"

Honestly, I'm not really a great writer, but I've been creating magic in my own mind ever since. (Probably had been well before then, too).:-)

for disappointment as Sputnik seized my imagination (c 1957) and off to the universe (and beyond) went I.
I gobbled up everything sciency or sci-fi from then on. Skipped comic books entirely. Went straight to Heinlein, Clark, and Norton, et al.
Although a brief foray into Tom Swift.

Always assumed Star Trek was the entirety of Sci Fi (although I enjoy Star Trek as an adult, I did not as a kid), then as a student teacher I put together a lesson plan using "The Giver" as my reader for the fourth grade class I was teaching. I realized then that science fiction is really more about the condition of man in different circumstances and how he deals with that.

But, yeah. That a pretty big leap from Santa to Heinlein, Clark, & Norton. You sound like you were a very precocious child. Hope your parents were able to keep up with you Smile

It's easy to relate to each example. I love your ideas and the funny, whimsical graphics and videos you find to express them. Especially now, when the whole world senses that it's teetering on the edge of something awful, we need to laugh, be innocent, keep that thread alive in our world.

I really needed to hear that. Sometimes I feel as though with all the horrors going on in the world, my OT's might come off as an utter disregard for the seriousness of the situation, when in reality, they are my way of coping. I meet people every day, and you'd be shocked at how much they tell me while I'm at work. A lot of it is very funny and we have marvelous conversations. But some of it can be heartbreaking. When I write these OT's, sometimes I just need a safe place to create an inner world and share them with people who understand the world we live in better than most.
