It appears that Old Guard leadership of the Democratic Party may not be able to just waltz back into power. At least not without a fight.
For starters, a 'Never Nancy' caucus is forming.

The revolt inside the Democratic Party against Nancy Pelosi's return to the House speakership is gaining momentum with a growing number of Democrats signing a letter pledging not to support the California Democrat for speaker.

“It’s going to get ugly,” a senior House Democrat told Fox News.

Fox News has confirmed at least 17 House Democrats, including incumbents and incoming members, have signed on to a document saying they will not support Pelosi on the House floor for speaker. A Democrat familiar with the effort says they are trying to add more names before the letter is publicly released.

If all those Democrats vote against Pelosi on the floor, Pelosi would not have the votes for speaker. To get the gavel, Pelosi will first need to pick up a majority of the Democratic Caucus in internal leadership elections, then go on to win an absolute majority of the House.

Reps. Seth Moulton of Massachusetts and Filemon Vela of Texas are two of the Democrats leading the fight for new leadership, and they appear to be winning. But nothing is set in stone yet.

According to a CNN tally, 10 incoming freshman have said they'd oppose Pelosi, while 13 incumbents have vowed to oppose her.
But it's unclear if those members might vote against her in the caucus yet vote for her on the House floor. After the 2016 elections, 63 Democrats opposed Pelosi in the leadership races but nearly all of them voted for her later on the floor.

Pelosi is incredibly unpopular with voters. Nearly half of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents want someone else.

Both the Progressive Caucus and the neoliberal New Democrats Caucus gained in the last election, so nothing was really settled as far as direction of the party.

The Progressive Caucus had 78 members and is expecting a net gain of at least 13 members, after factoring in retirements. That leaves the CPC at somewhere between 91 and 97 members.
Progressives would have done far better if the DCCC hadn't supported corporate Dems over progressives by a ratio of 100 to 1.

The pro-business New Democrat Coalition currently has 68 members and should have at least 89 members next year.

On the other hand, when it comes to the issues, incoming Democrats are leaning left.

The resulting data shows that 65 percent of the incoming House freshman class embraced some version of Medicare-for-all or expanding Social Security benefits. Almost 80 percent embraced lowering prescription drug costs by challenging Big Pharma. And 82 percent favored challenging corporate power in our political system by rejecting corporate PAC money, passing a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United or passing campaign finance reform such as public financing of elections.

As Vox’s Matthew Yglesias reported, this stands in stark contrast to “what a moderate Democrat looked like in the very recent past.”

The Congressional Black Caucus took a shot at Tom Perez at the DNC, but for the worst reason.

Members passed a measure inside their caucus stating they have “no confidence” in Perez as DNC chair. Black Caucus members remain upset with how Perez handled the historic August vote to strip superdelegates of their power during the party’s presidential nominating process. The changes block superdelegates — elected officials and party leaders — from casting a vote for any presidential candidate unless a second ballot is required at the 2020 national convention.

“I think just a lack of respect for our members — you know during the Hillary [Clinton] race if we went to 300 places for Congress, we went to 400-500 places for Hillary,” Richmond said of Black congressional members. “It’s one of the things with being a party leader.”

More proof that the AA community is being poorly represented.

In the Senate, OTOH, there was no drama at all.
