OT ~ Welcome to Saturday Morning!

Sit-a-while
on swinging porch
where tin-dippers and
sweet water
in cool touches
meet lips
from hand dug wells.

Good morning good people!

Normally, i refrain from getting involved in news on Saturdays, but this morning, i'm conflicted: recalling 'four dead in Ohio,' Watts, Detroit, Chicago, Selma, the Greensboro Woolworths and the turkey plate and special club sandwiches of my youth and ensuing sit-in and the returning caskets of my school mates from jungles unknown and Issac Bevins in bellowing voice--who at summer camp at beautiful Lake Junaluska in the Smokies--told us how he had to mow his lawn twice as much as his white neighbors in his new middle-class home and Human Rights Year, 68 at the UN, the Village clothed in psychedelic rose-gardens, everywhere--the 14 addict chapel congregation on Bleecker sharing all; Prague Spring happening as we sat in Czech Embassy being rushed down and out of the complex through a long tunnel to avoid the growing violent demonstration outside and closing down UNC, twice, marching with Abbie Hoffman on Franklin Street and Nixon's edict to university presidents to close down the protests or forgo federal money and a good man, head of Wilson Library, resigning in protest to the university's response and my first black classmate and the first co-ed dorm and the poets, authors and music driving, educating and leading us and the assassinations, 'the good they die young' and the people joining hands and so many more memories, i cry for Charlottesville and what it means.

Morning Poem: Ode to Charlottesville

Flower was everything

springing, exploding with sun

sleeping with moon

sustaining

sifting biscuits into civilizations

all knees worshiping, rising

the living, not talking

stalk of being, hidden

until

a child asked why

Petal by petal

raining down

ignored, trampled, fluffed off

blown in wind

chafed

until

a child asked why

Bees knew, butterflies, too

so did the bear and antelope

Mayfly and dew

wet with understanding

and children asked why

River knew

banks, red clay, talc, roots,

truffles hidden from view

especially knew

kneading

secret recipes

of taste and beauty

In toddler's prism

taking shape

ivy waits

wanting, growing

cover

cutting stems

fitting vase,

gas lighting

measuring

blending, shaking, stirring grace

first in place

last to show

beyond the pale of pouring souls

the beat goes on

mums or mummies

drumming nectar's sweet, poison's bitter

nectar sweet, poison bitter

until

morning comes

and

a child asks

which side are you on?

Morning music:

Morning quote:
“He is in a constant state of stage fright, he says, because he never knows what part of his life he is going to have to act in next”
~ Kurt Vonnegut Jr., Slaughterhouse-Five

And a good morning to my dear recently walked-on 84-year-old skiing partner, a Holocaust Survivor, a dancer on skis and the best human being we all had the pleasure of loving.

“A day spent without the sight or sound of beauty, the contemplation of mystery, or the search of truth is a poverty-stricken day; and a succession of such days is fatal to human life.”
~ Lewis Mumford

Have a fulfilling day and weekend everyone!

BTW, "He ain't heavy; he's my brother" comes from Father Flanagan's Boys town, circa 1917.

Get out the tissues:

Back in 1918, a boy named Howard Loomis was abandoned by his mother at Father Flanagan’s Home for Boys, which had opened just a year earlier. Howard had polio and wore heavy leg braces. Walking was difficult for him, especially when he had to go up or down steps.

Soon, several of the Home’s older boys were carrying Howard up and down the stairs.

One day, Father Flanagan asked Reuben Granger, one of those older boys, if carrying Howard was hard.

Reuben replied, “He ain’t heavy, Father… he’s m’ brother.”

It's been a very long time since I saw the film on TV, but I have a dim recollection that, in the film, a boy carries his crippled brother to Boys' Town. Could be wrong.

Either way, it's a tear jerker.

Have a beautiful Saturday.

You bring much to our conversations; appreciated.

Found this:

One of Father Flanagan's first boys he took in from court in a ninety dollar home Flanagan apparently had borrowed the money to establish.

Notice, the Winston ad is prominently displayed in the vid and contestants received a carton with prize money.

the game. I wonder if they were encouraged to do that? Anyway, I did some digging. Host Gary Moore, who had helped launch Carol Burnett's career, died of emphysema and throat cancer in his late seventies. He quit broadcasting after the cancer diagnosis.

Henry Morgan had a heart attack and died of lung cancer, also in his late seventies. Though apolitical, he had been blacklisted for a time.

Mr. Morgan, long a three-pack-a-day cigarette smoker, stopped making tobacco commercials in 1969 but never stopped smoking. "I implore other people not to start smoking or to give it up, even though I can't," he said. At one point, he took stock of his declining health, which included a heart attack, and compiled a fact sheet for his own obituary. He calculated that over his lifetime, he had consumed 500 pastrami sandwiches, 3,000 quarts of beer, 7,000 quarts of liquor and 1,697,000 cigarettes.

There will be no funeral, but Ms. Harris said there would be a memorial party during the cocktail hour at Sardi's Restaurant on June 7.

http://www.nytimes.com/1994/05/20/obituaries/henry-morgan-acerbic-wit-of...

Boyish-looking Bill Cullen died youngest, at 70, of lung cancer. He had survived polio as an infant and had a car accident in 1937, both of which left him with disabilities, including impaired ability to walk. He served in World War II as an Army pilot anyway, though his disabilities disqualified him from combat duty. He joined the Civil Air Patrol as well.

I don't know if Bess Myerson smoked, but she survived ovarian cancer and a stroke, dying at age 90. Daughter of Russian immigrants, she was the first Miss New York to win Miss America (no blond hair or adorable Southern accent?) and the only Jewish woman to win it ever. She was a Democrat and had a varied and interesting career.

Betsy Palmer died at 88. I don't know if she smoked.

It could be that both Bess and Betsy were young ladies (sic) at a time when only "fast" females smoked and that may account for their longevity compared with the males on the show.

3/5 of the panel of a game show sponsored by a tobacco company. Good people, too. And we don't know if the other two were smokers. A cautionary tale.

enjoyed the details...recalling that huge TV with giant tubes in back needing replacement monthly and the antenna, a giant one in top of very tall pine tree. 'Such a long strange trip, it's been.'

A good day to you!

thanks for the link, enjoyed the read, especially this tidbit: "(Ray) Bradbury talked about coming west through the Dust Bowl on the train, reading a book he’d picked up before the trip: The Grapes of Wrath by Steinbeck. He said, “I was reading about it, and traveling through it —

and this, became The Martian Chronicles.""

thank you!

Later next week, I'll be where I've got your FSNC quotes. Got to take a trip to have 'the B' rechecked, and will be in the path of the eclipse. We're not able to get the special glasses, so we'll just get off the road for several hours.

Enjoyed seeing the comments about some of my favorite game show hosts/guests. My Family loved watching 'I've Got A Secret.' I was thinking that they actually smoked on the show, sometimes. Think Bess and Betsy were relatively young compared to the other regular panelists (but I could be wrong).

If you think about it, a lot of the entertainment back then was fun and interesting, and it didn't reek of depravity. We cut ourselves off from TeeVee (except for C-Span) quite a few years ago, since, except for a couple of home decorating programs, we simply couldn't stomach the programming.

Hope your Mom is doing well, and that the processing of Medicaid isn't too much of a headache.

Hey, have a good rest of your weekend!

Mollie

pardon my late reply; thank you for your kind words and glad you enjoyed.

Henry has added fun and interesting post above about the cast members. Think, i'll do a little more on live TV in future on OT as many of us have memories to share.

Since you are traveling, be safe.
