Good morning good people,

Cherokee purple and bell pepper

rescued from food lion's

clutches for five dollars never missed,

beyond budget

what the hell for a bell and a purple

Not enough sun

not enough oxygen tween lungs and heart

pushing metal to floor,

she stalls, no tune-up will do

plight of ages endured

Strong of stem, these two will grow

proved in time having courage of drought, pests and loneliness

if they have sun

Shy they are, never talking, courteous, green,

wanting what all want, fruit

water, peace and sun

until work is done

Seeds formed for eternity

rolling eggs of destiny

untouched by blight, wilting stress

intruding weeds and mites

they grow

sight unseen sharing delights, every night

breathing out oxygen, giving back

great works of humility

treading upon no thing

possessing genes galore greeting shores

knowing more in pores

than spiders

Laptop in hand, here it sits

smiling gleefully

trading selfish wits

magenta heart pumping, still colored

willing to run, if able ...

writing fables, news no more

roots reaching down

G'morning, Smiley. Very morning here, but neither of us

can sleep, so up we are. The poem and morning jazz ease the entry into the world of waking and working. Thanks mucho.

Today is Farmers' market, maybe we'll walk down, we did last week and it worked out fine. Harvested apples yesterday, very selectively because we still have so much frozen from prior years. Have a 5 gal bucket about half full, but not done yet either. Chard is still going great guns, plus some of the kale. Making chile verde today. Have a nice Nebbiolo-Barbera to go with it.

Good on the Bums; they've been pretty much my team since the Koufax-Drysdale era. Last walk-off homer was possibly the most improbable event in baseball. Gibson hit it off of Eckersley, the king of closers. I was an As fan too. In normal play, when they brought in the Eck, the game was over, it was that simple, guaranteed save, guaranteed win. So the Bums bring in Gibson who can barely walk and is a guaranteed out unless he walks or hits a homer which is exactly what he does - simply amazing.

Dodgers fan in same period; don't really follow sports anymore, a little skiing, Mikaela Shiffrin opens the season today, but the headline of 18 innings, wow, that's a lot of hotdogs.
Enjoyed your highlight of the most improbable event in baseball.

Rainy day, here and i'm under the weather, don't know what's up, felt great Wednesday and Thursday, but something changed last evening.

Enjoy those apples and the market, dinner and the wine, and cheers for reading.

Smiley, some weather changes really do a number

@smiley7 on bodies, making a person ache. Common in people with arthritis those who have had broken bones, etc. If that is the cause, you'll feel better in a few hours.

cherokee purples are my fave

...not very prolific (nor particularly pretty) but the tastiest (IMO). Dug the last of the sweet taters this week. Still have greens going (should make it through winter with mulch and row covers). They are calling for an el nino this winter which means wet and mild for us usually.

Trade day was thin since there's a light mist this morning. Did get some avocados, but that was all. Just starting to get a little color...dogwoods, sumac and black gums redden, sweet gum and poplar yellowing...but just hints of what is to come. The turkeys are clucking this morning, and the birds seem happy with the rain over the last couple of days.

Hope all you c99 birds are having a nice day too. Thanks for the poem and OT.

those sweet potatoes, yum?

Leaves are gone up high and colors muddied in the valleys, disappointing leaf season. Have to drive down to Chapel Hill next week, maybe some colors will shine through on the way.

El Nino can mean a bad ski season locally. Hope not.

Cool, two methods i'm accustomed to are digging

or plowing the fields and letting them dry on top of the soil or sunning them for many days laid out in flats. Wondered how others accomplished the same cure.

Mom's favorite, this sunning she had calculated. Love them simply roasted, best; but in skilled hands, a pie can move the senses; vicariously longing for a time gone by and cheers.

Since it seems like you are the gardening OT now, and also the inner peace OT, I am going to share some things that don't seem appropriate in other places and hope others will enjoy them.

First . . . @enhydra lutris . . . how wonderful you have apples! And swiss chard! I have planted 4 apple trees that are supposed to produce in this zone 8, but there are no guarantees.

Here is a pic of what I am mostly harvesting still now . . . squash.

Earlier in the year we were getting quite a few butternut squash, but these long snake looking varieties are https://www.rareseeds.com/zucchino-rampicante-squash/ the Italian Zucchino Rampicante Squash. If you eat them young they are like a summer squash, but if you let them grow large they are a winter squash. I prefer the winter squash stage. Also in the picture are some yellow straight neck squash and one zucchini. Those were from an "old seed hail mary planting" in late August. Lastly there is a loaf of Italian bread - a recently discovered recipe that has turned out to be fabulous. Is even great when substituting other flours and seeds. https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/22823/italian-bread-using-a-bread-mach... The changes I make is that I add an egg to the recipe and don't bother with the slit. Also only cook it for 25 minutes.

Next picture is of a fun project I am doing with my wonderful neighbor.

We used to email each other in between visits, but recently she has a few memory/confusion issues and just can't operate a computer anymore. So, we put up a mailbox at the gate between our two properties and do snail mail. We send each other notes and veggies, etc.

My daughter has gotten me to watch a wonderful program on Netflix with her this weekend. It is called "Natural Curiosities" and it is hosted by David Attenborough. It is wonderful! Also, we voted yesterday. She is 19 so it was her first time. Go Beto!

Lastly, because my son just came and said it is time to work out . . . A link to one of my favorite spiritual dudes, Richard Rohr.

I have not heard all of the lectures, but from this talk, it sounds like the theme of the conference was partly at least, "looking into the darkness." Will we be ready? Being ready means to be embracing diversity, the unexpected, and not being "know-it-alls." Know that we don't know sort of thing. He also said, "maybe we should thank the person who coined the term "fake news" because it is all fake news. I'm not saying that they are all lying - that's not my point. I am saying that what does any of it matter in the big picture of life."

My husband, who is a handy-dandy dude, fixed it up - added a new back and a flag. My neighbor can't do email, and I have a hard time with the phone since my hearing sucks . . . this works. Just went to the box and there was a craft apron in it for my daughter.

Well, Smiley . . . your Saturday OT is always a lift for me - even if I read it late or don't have time to comment.

I just found Brandi Carlile myself and thought you might enjoy her work. I look forward to listening to Mike Cross but will have to put that off till Monday as tomorrow is a long work day for me and I generally just manage to fall in bed when I get home.

It seems there were a lot of nice and interesting comments on this thread....as well as music...so Monday I will catch up with them. It will be small pleasure to anticipate. Hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend.
