Hello, absentee thread spewing NCTim here. I am off on a dream motorcycle ride to and through Colorado.

I am not quite sure how an extended motorcycle trip will play out. I've laid out several ~six hour days within Colorado, but ...

I stopped by the motorcycle shop to talk Colorado, causing me to have to see Black Canyon of Gunnison.

The plan is to take it one day at a time and let the cosmos steer me.

I intend to get Rocky Mountain high, with several pass crossings above 10,000'

I am looking forward to the solitude and isolation from the daily soap opera.

And enjoying the Colorado harvest.

Have a great weekend! The thread is OPEN.

My son for a while lived in Denver. Loved to climb the high passes with his mini-pickup.

I went to Fort Collins for a meeting. Driving mountain roads in a van was dull, exciting only by blind turns and screaming passengers.

Hey! my dear friends or soon-to-be's, JtC could use the donations to keep this site functioning for those of us who can still see the life preserver or flotsam in the water.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison. There
is a campground up top there somewhere that we stayed at years ago. Just avoid camping at Green River on the way down if you exit to the west.

It is a very lemony light outside today. Autumn with spring temperatures. Currently 66 here in the woods.

and see the Mesa Verde ruins. They are amazing and high up. Great ride.
Then you will be at the gateway to the largest concentration of National Parks in the whole country.
Canyonlands, Grand Staircase-Escalante, Arches, Island in the Sky, Dark Canyon, Capital Reef, Bryce Canyon, and Zion are all must see and high up.
Some are above 12,000 ft.
If you are going further west there is Flaming Gorge and Dinosaur NP. And while it's getting a little late in the year, you might be able to squeeze in Yellowstone.
If you are 62 you can get a Senior Pass for life that's gets you into all NPs for free and all National Forrest campgrounds for half price. Up until August 28th 2017 it cost $10 dollars for a lifetime pass. It's now $80.
Happy trails Tim. Remember, rubber side down.

@earthling1 Husband wants to take a trip on old route 66. I'm not all that into it but I thought after New Mexico head up to Colorado. The National Parks are what I would like to see. So we can compromise on that!

That's funny you reference the senior National Parks lifetime pass. When my FIL went into assisted living and we were cleaning out his duplex we found a piece of paper that said just that. Of corse we didn’t believe it so we threw it away. Damn!

@WIProgressive
California has saved a portion of it as the National Trails highway. It begins in Ludlow, California and is the original 66 going east to Needles.
I travelled 66 as a kid in the early fifties 5 or 6 times with my Dad in a '49 Ford. Back and forth to West Virginia.
In honor today, I travel with a 2 gallon desert water bag hanging from the front bumper of my motorhome.

@earthling1 But we decided to save that for when we're both retired so we can spend time there. We have a 61 Buick Electra 225 that I thought would be way more fun to take but he doesn't trust it on a road trip like that. I bought the Rt. 66 ez guide to try and piece together as much of the old route sections as possible. There is also an online forum. Which that part of it I enjoy. Except when I get blamed for navigation errors!

@earthling1

The variety and utter uniqueness of the Southern Utah canyon lands are amazing. It's like visiting another planet where the paths take you through surreal landscapes of natural sculpture gardens of every colour and shape.

traveling through such splendour with nothing but your desire and the cosmos to steer you, sounds divine.

Go well Tim.

I couldn't view the photo of the canyon in your essay, but here's a photo from the net of Black Canyon of Gunnison. It's stunning.

@orlbucfan Next hurricane could influence my weather. Irma left with showers. My driveway is being redone.
