For centuries the death penalty, often accompanied by barbarous refinements, has been trying to hold crime in check; yet crime persists.

Good Funkin' Friday!
Count off and split into tribes.
The only thing I am on board with is that Fredo is too funking stupid to know what he is doing.
Just sayin'.
Thankful to be old, and hopefully miss the end of humanity.
Oh well.
Have a great weekend. The thread is OPEN.

This is the store that I like and use. There are several cannabis dispensaries in this one small town. This story is about one of them. New York State Failed to pass legalization of cannabis in the budget process this year. Effing idiots!
I lost a CA friend recently. He was 99.5 years old. In WWII he was the pilot of a bomber plane and crew that flew the full 25 missions from England hitting Germany. Not many of them made the full 25 without getting shot down. When I met him he was in his 60's and retired from the phone company. He loved wind surfing and spent most of his free time doing that. He kept it up until he was in his late 70's. Then a shoulder surgery put and end to that recreation for him.
Your friend sounds wonderful. I'm sorry you lost him.

Good morning, Tim ~~~
That Camus ~ he was one savvy hombre. Our society, on the other hand, well...what can one say that hasn't already been said?
My mom used to talk about how hard life was. I didn't get it. I'm starting to get it, however, as I get closer to my 70's. I hope we don't see the end of humanity, but some people are pretty determined to make it a living hell for the rest of us!
Have a glorious day and weekend, folks!

Admin nitpick: “Open Thread” tag needs fixing — remove the “s”?
The additional “s” seems to be preventing the post from being recognized as an open thread and automatically being listed as such in the left-hand column.
Good Friday
Yes, it is very specific on the tag line. I've had that trouble before. Thanks for pointing it out.

Depends on your definition of "humanity."
Just being a gratuitous wiseass. Lots of evidence of that humanity abides. Example: Someone stole the prosthetic leg of a little kid. Replacement cost: 20K supposedly. (Why the hell does it cost so much? It's mostly plastic, ffs.) Very soon after a local news program announced that, more than money was raised to replace it.
On the other hand, whoever stole the leg seems sub-human. It's not as though you can take a prosthetic leg and stick on it someone of any age for whom it was not made.
One of the best things about posting on this thread is wishing everyone an enjoyable weekend and that is what I wish all of you.

I find it HILAROUS that the MSM takeaway from recent events...
Is "You can't trust the Mueller report at ALL!" EXCEPT the part where it says that Russia interfered with the election. That we can take on faith!
I have seen this kind of logic before. In Premillennialism Dispensationalists... you know, the folks who literally believe that Jesus will beam them up to heaven, giving them a complete pass on that whole DEATH thing. They believe that you have to skip around in the bible, ignoring certain things, but paying EXTREME attention to tiny little details that have zero meaning on their own, but if you look at them in the right light and squint... it all makes sense.
It's faith now. Deal with it. We've got a cult running the show, and there's no way that they'll give it up as long as the cult leaders keep control. You can scream all you want about their lies, but until the people are willing to compare ACTIONS and rhetoric, they ain't gonna see the truth.
You can't make a man free. They have to do it themselves.

The question: How many people have seen the unredacted
Mueller report? Who are the ones who are allowed to make redactions? Are they less than two hands full, several tenth of people, several hundreds? Over thousand? Where do they work? FBI? State Department? Pentagon (NSA, CIA, NDI? Congress? Supreme Court ? Other Courts?
I can't understand. And you c99ers seem all to have done nothing else for the last thirty years to follow these things.
May be someone like Sanders doesn't talk about the things that matter, because if he would talk about them he knows he wouldn't be able to walk his talk and therefore rather talks about something else or says nothing. And this darn campaign season haunts us for another year...

(or a song by Paul Williams at any rate):

The Nazis killed millions of Jews.

AGCC is happening.

Being alone by itself is not a bad thing
And cessation of the bodily experience is not really tragic to the individual experience, as it seems inevitable. So, therefore, finding yourself alone at death's door may be easier to introduce your (ex) self to the new community of free souls. Or something.
question everything
you may speak for yourself, but definitely do not
for me. i'm afraid that i find the notion that there is any existence, whether of consciousness, or self, or spirit, or any other meaningful thing at all, outside of the corporeal experience, to be ... quaintly wishful.
all that is me, is an outcome of my brain's physics. when it goes, i go, never again to be, just as i never was before.
regardless, i think i will not resist -- particularly if i am, as i expect to be, alone.

Yeah, no
Not meant to transpire your experience. Just trying to parse the concept of alone + death. Separating the two is what makes our understandings unique. I appreciate the zero before and after idea you express.

I for one, appreciate
your trying to parse the concept of 'alone + death'. It made me consider the concept more intimately, as the enigma of life itself is.
*changed one of those pesky prepositions.
Hmm, treading lightly
on fragile surfaces here. Personally have connections with both the before and after. Difficult to put into physics friendly concepts. Bit beyond scope of comment. Might be fun to explore in a thread.

I see your associations
Interesting. Pretty sure the pilgrims fleeing their england were running away from something bigger than themselves. They could not change the current structure. Running away from their establishment created a void. Filled by coercing the indigenous to believe like they.
Kinda weird. If one is in a new and strange territory, would it not make more sense to accept the locals (who are not fleeing) than to change them? Rhetorical.
question everything
Rhetorically and emphatically, yes
John Ralston Saul has argued that Canada has been
in denial about its own culture for at least a hundred and fifty years -- that contrary to the model of a culture built from two major influences, French and English, it's actually built on three, but the white folks haven't wanted to acknowledge the indigenous influence. He claims that fairly early on during settlement times, the wiser Europeans realized that the only way they were going to survive the harsh geographical realities of Canada was by adopting various practices from the locals -- basically, by "going native" -- and that this heritage persists in modern mainstream canadian culture.
