Open Thread Friday

Winter has finally hit. Shoveled all paths to the livestock three times between yesterday morning and this evening. Today's week's is a little short on words and long on videos.
Thought you might find information on the The 90+ Study interesting. It was initiated in 2003 and had followed individuals for 11 years at the time of the videos.

Part 1 (12.50 min)

I'll look forward to watching the clips, SoE.

Longevity seems to be a popular pursuit these days. I've seen several interviews with longevity expert Valter Longo ...
https://valterlongo.com/daily-longevity-diet-for-adults/
However I've never understood why he promotes a fasting mimicking diet rather than an actual fast.

And Jason Fung has a book out on longevity also.
https://thefastingmethod.com/the-longevity-solution/

Personally longevity is not my goal. Being healthy, fit, active, and feeling well till I die is my objective. I want to exit like my grandmother....go to bed one night and wake up dead the next day.

Thanks again for the films and the OT...I'll check them out. Stay warm and safe in the winter like weather! It was in the 60's here yesterday, but we're due a taste of winter soon.

@Lookout @Lookout morning went fast chores take a little longer with ice and snow. Everyone was munching feed as I walked the last round.

It is interesting how each physician develops similar programs from the primary viewpoint of their professional work. If they are all in the same room a week could be spent debating and not come to the consensus of a single program. Plus they all want to sell books, programs and lectures. Dr. Valter Longo worked in calorie restriction research and looking at impact on longevity using animal models. His focus was not preventing diabetic complications. The calorie restriction diets have not been in use long enough to know if a scientifically significant number of individuals will increase the length of their life.

Dr Fung started in patient care not research. His suggestions had to be accepted by his patients and easy to implement by other practitioners. It appears from the list of suggestion he is incorporating some of the findings from the The 90+ Study, which is still ongoing today.

happen at this elevation, but frost is a concern, so we have to start setting up the current configuration to facilitate row covers and such. We also managed to burn out our big fan that we used under the orange tree and will be replacing that. That, really, is all the winterizing we do, beyond picking winter crops.

Have no great desire to live past 90 unless I get refurbished, and I main major full body overhaul and not some sort of tune-up. No particular fear of the void. Thanks for the vids all the same.

Here "Black Friday" means 2 days of clean-up and getting back to normal routine after T-Day, so I guess I'd best start poking at the edges. Wink

Have a good one.

That, in its essence, is fascism--ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power. -- Franklin D. Roosevelt --

@enhydra lutris cover, uncover and repeat until the the weather gives you a break.

The study originally was looking at incidence of dementia, potential prevention and contributors. Found a number of unexpected patterns related to physical and mental health as we age. My personal goal is to stay as physically and mentally active to be able to live in my own home, however short or long that may be. The fear of the void so many have prevents one from enjoying life.

Did not take time to comment, but found value in reading Carl Sagan baloney detection tool kit.

and all

Raining in Tx and pouring in SCruz apparently. Hope it sinks in. Pumpkin pie and bread pudding for breaky. Onward. Revamping macros for my blog. woo hoo!

Hope to be healthy for the duration. Age is a surprise to me. Never thought of anything happening beyond 70. Realized I needed a plan for the next 20-30 a couple of years ago.

Be well, all...

@magiamma active relatives when I was a child. Thought active old age was normal. My parents generation were raised in town and near military bases with nuclear activity. Plus in their working careers were exposed to numerous manufacturing chemicals and lived significantly shorter lives with more health problems. My planning goals have been mixed.

I have been most surprised how fast the time moves forward.

the privledged Aristocracy, and Royalty had Lolita Isle to go to for their periodic injection from soy boys and young punta.
I wonder where they go for young hearts and other organs to fight off that which they are most afraid of, death from old age.
When you are filthy rich and priviledged, you can't bear the thought it will someday end.
It must suck to be them.
I, otoh, am not afraid of death and do not need the promise of some paradise in waiting to cushion the fear of the end. All I want or expect is a place of peace, where there is no more pain, or hunger, or sorrow. A place where mine enemies can no longer harm me.
And last for eternity.
Sounds like heaven, huh? Don't need no King to rule over me.
True freedom.
Thanks for the OT, SoE.

@earthling1 organs harvested in areas of deliberately destabilized regions like Syria for extending lives. I am beginning to believe for Christians the more one participates in evil within the definitions of the religion the greater the fear of death.

Your definition of freedom resonates. Thanks for the words.

My husband had to pick her up from her home (a fabulous house that takes care of 6 elderly dementia women). I had the whole Thanksgiving feast laid out. She ate very gratefully. We have really too many rescue cats right now. 7 in the main house. However, Nonna (husband's mom) was so delighted with then and they with her. They snuggled and napped. Plus, there was no dementia with her and the cats. They completely understood each other. Sort of miraculous.

I enjoyed watching the 2 parts of The Oldest Olds - Living Beyond.

It's a fascinating study, that broadens ones perspective of how the body and mind ages, the uniqueness, and the connection between the two.

@janis b We are often given the message medical science has all the answers and it doesn't. There is still plenty of mystery to explore.

@smiley7 I been reviewing different qigong programs for deeper understanding and practice suggestions. This one I found extremely interesting on health and its approach to lung exercises and breathing. Understanding Qigong DVD 4—Four Seasons Qigong The couple of people I have encouraged to watch the DVD have some improvement in breathing after practicing the techniques. Each of them had not had a respiratory therapist explain a similar technique. Sorry, I have not been able to find a free clip of that segment of the DVD.
